Holiday Class, Lights, Lesson 1

A 4-hour nighttime exposure of the southern sky at Bea Creek camp, just east of Tom Price, in Western Australia. Set the camera up, clicked the button, and went to bed.

It appears as if all of the stars in the night sky are rotating around. In actuality, it is the Earth which is rotating underneath the stars. But since my camera is fixed to Earth, we get the illusion of celestial rotation. Since the stars made about 1/6 of a circle in the sky, the exposure lasted 1/6 x 24 hours = 4 hours. The shutter stayed open until the batteries gave out.

The color and capturing the Southern Celestial Pole in the sky (the spot around which all of the stars seem to be rotating) were beautiful surprises. If you look carefully, you can spot the Southern Cross (Crux) just above the treeline.

The Southern Cross is one of the most recognizable constellations in the southern hemisphere. You'll find it on the flags of Australia and New Zealand. In the picture, the Southern Cross is on its side. The top of the cross is at about 4 o'clock, while the bottom is at about 10 o'clock. Identifying and painting the various values in the shadow was extremely challenging in this exercise.

I woke up early(Since My body was still on Chicago time!) while in Seattle and was awarded with an overcast grey day! I shot anyway, and tried to get creative with what I had to work with, so I shot some potential B&W(By changing my LCD to show me the monochrome image) and then thought about white balance! So, most of the sliding on this was actually done IN camera by changing my white balance towards the cool end of things! FInished it up in ColorEFX 4 and just love this one!!

The funny thing is, that the next morning was that amazing sunrise I captured here and here, and so it wasn't until this weekend, a month later, that I even looked at what I thought was a wash out the day before!!

Lesson1: never give up when your in the field! Think! How can I make the best out of what I have been given?

Lesson2:Don't delete shots too soon! they may still have life left in them!!

New online sketch class, 1st page of a brand new journal (Strathmore series 500 hardbound for mixed media), new minimum palette (as close to Liz's as I could come with paints I have) and I'm starting 7 weeks behind schedule. Thank goodness Liz will keep the lessons online for a year! Happy New year of artistic pursuits! It took me way too long to settle on the minimal kit, but was very important to accomplish! I rushed the page being determined to get lesson 1 done asap so I can try to make up for the weeks of lost time, if possible. Frustrated to be starting so far behind and doubt I'll connect with other students who will be working on different lessons. A special circumstance did not allow me to begin at the start. Glad to have now begun on this first day of 2015! Thankful for this experience, it's a blessing. Also... I was trying to place paints same as Liz, and have since realized this is the wrong placement for ME, since I am not lefthanded. Once I've settled on 6 colors they will be arranged differently, (yellows at top, then reds and blues)which may morph again!

Really enjoyed doing this exercise. My pen drawing looked pretty odd, but adding the colour really made it look better.

Having so much fun with the lines lesson had to try it on a Spanish church from one of my trips.

Fun Exercise! Not sure what I'm doing, but I got this done & uploaded! Yay me!

After the 4th or 5th time around with this building, I've gotten much more comfortable with it.

At the Botanical Gardens on Saturday for Sydney Urban Sketchers get together, so tackled the same monument that Liz had sketched in her demonstration but from a different angle. I found this harder to do than the shoes, with the busy background distracting me, and maybe because I did this one before exercise 1. Shame about the pen leakage!!

When I started to sketch the shoes in colour blocks I could see that the left side was in dark shadow compared to the right side. The ribbons and details are a very similar colour to the shoe itself so when I squinted my eyes to see the colour blocks the details on the shoe disappeared so I painted it how I seen it through squinted eyes. Not sure if I've completed the exercise correctly after seeing everyones on here though.

Lesson 1 - my sketch kit.

I used a new pen to sketch this and I made the mistake of presuming the ink was waterproof. Once I started adding the watercolours I realised it wasn't! But, I've learnt that it's not the end of the world if some of my lines get washed away and bleed.

My Palette, I bought this palette but have just swapped my paints to a different palette as I didn't like the dividers that hold the paints in place (they seem to hide too much of the pans).

I loved doing this exercise! I've never done anything like this before, and though the result is simple, I find it quite charming. I enjoyed observing the subtle shapes around the building and the windows.

I didn't print off the photo (I don't have a colour printer), so sometimes it's difficult to observe the more subtle shapes on my computer screen.

#lesson1

I really like the color of my super 5 fountain pen. It should have had a reflection of the light on it, but I messed it up. So I decided to paint it over. Then I tried putting white water color pencil on top with no effect. I have seen Jens Hübner use a white Faber Castell PITT artist pen for that purpose and I think it might have done the trick. I should buy one.

The shadows are all wrong. I used a Tombow pen for them.

Following a photo from the internet, which showed strong shadows, I added dark areas. I really like how these images pop, but you have to step back a few feet to really see it.
