It's not much of a monument... Electrical pole with mountains and trees etc - behind and simplified.
For Cathy Johnson's Online watercolor class.
I am not computer literate...nor photoshop..and these pics are showing up different than they look on paper.
This includes techniques of spattering, drybrush, scraping etc.
#lesson1 - draw with pencil (eraser not allowed) and only use one colour to shade - I used watercolour paint for this.
Only using one colour to shade was painful for me! I struggled so much with this. My biggest weakness is not being good with values which results in me not getting a good enough contrast.
#lesson1 Constructing volumes. I found this exercise to be most in line with how I would normally work, but think doing the 2 other exercises first really helped.
Sketching Now Foundations #lesson1
Liz suggested for seasoned sketchers to use some previous unused tools for the course.
I don't feel "seasoned", but I'm a kind of art supply junky. So I take the chance and try some of the pens that I usually don't like. Maybe we can make friends during the next weeks.
Lamy Vista: I always loved it with the M-nibs for writing. But when I tried the EF-nibs for sketching I really hated it. I know a lot of you really love it, but I don't like the scratching sound on the paper. But it will get its chance.
Staedtler: I added these fineliner for convenience. Whenever the Lamy and the Parker pens start to annoy me.
Parker Urban: This was a bad buy. I wanted a fountain pen for writing and this is a fineliner with a fountain pen look. But maybe it's a good sketching tool?
Derwent pencils: Not my favourites because of their thick lead. Sharpening them with a knife may help me to get used to them.
Pilot Color Pen and Pentel Pen Brush: Just further dusty inhabitants of my pen-and-pencil-drawer.

After leaving the Oktoberfest, I drove up to the Abbey and sketched the church. There are many beautiful buildings on this campus including a famous library designed by Alvar Aalto. I'll have to come back. I used a brush pen for this one and then added watercolor. I learned that I can't sit for long on stone steps. Ouch! I can't remember the last time I used a coloured pencil for drawing, and I loved it! When I finished, I realised I'd focused on drawing the *edges* of the blue, rather than the overall *shape* of the blue. I also did some restatements of the six blue rectangles at the front.
I found it difficult to focus on the negative space rather than the sky but hopefully with practise I can get better at switching the object bit of my brain off for a while! I think this was good exercise for me because I tend to get so bogged down and distracted by tiny details, which I couldn't do here. #lesson1 #lesson1manly

1) Always make sure your white balance is set properly
2) Use the flash or available light to reflect light onto the subject
4) Use soft, diffused light to limit harsh shadows
5) Settings? What settings? Use the scene modes, or Program mode, which is best 95% of the time.
6) Don't underexpose backlit sujects, and don't go high-key either... but if you do you can always bring out the detail later using Adobe Photoshop CS3.

The one with the pencil is the one with water added. The second one without the pencil is pre water. I liked working with pencil. It seems more forgiving and warm somehow. What's more, I had this pencil sitting in my unused supplies container so it was good to try it out.. I had to limit my time because I have a lot of stuff on the to do list today. Trying to do this first rather than saving it until everything else gets done which is never!
#lesson1 Stuck at home with my leg up in the air and a cold so doing the first lesson in the course was a life saver. The exercise was to sketch your sketching kit and get to know it better
After our exciting visit of the Moscow Metro we emerged from deep underground at Smolenskaya station on Arbat Street and we were a bit hungry. It was around 4:00pm, too early for dinner, but at a good time for a pause and a snack. And guess what?! This wonderful restaurant appeared like magic just in front of our eyes. The only problem was that Huguette hates MacDonald's! So, we continued on and soon found a nice little café – there are plenty of them on Arbat Street – where we each had a lovely cappuccino with pastries.
By the way, this is probably the best starting point – i.e. Lesson no.1 – to learn the Russian alphabet. All the letters are there (only the apostrophe is missing) and it's easy to see which Cyrillic letter corresponds to which Roman letter. A hint: the letters A, M and O are the same in both alphabets! Today was a beautiful sunny day. I researched memorials in downtown Salem and found there is an Oregon WW II memorial next to the Capitol building, which was news to me and I've lived here for 40 years. This being Labor Day, parking downtown is free - perfect. I did the change of planes drawing on the left first. I didn't include any shadow shapes, just the edges of actual objects. On the opposite page I sketched the edges where there were changes in color or value and then roughed in the colors with watercolor. I like how the shapes of the left hand pedestals of the long stone bench are defined by the shadows alone without using line and the right edge of the monument is defined by the sky color.

Better late than never! Had modem glitches...
I've been "travelling" around my neighbourhood with this kit for most of this year with the exception of the water colours and the LAMY pens which are new.
BTW if you think it's odd to have a sketchbook with no binding, you're right! I decided to make my own book and found I'd run out of wire coils. They're on the way.

Sketching Now Foundations #lesson1
This is the Sennelier Traveller Box with 14 half pans. I bought it two years ago while on vacation.
Just like the watercolour pencils not all colours I would have chosen for a set of 14. But I thought this class would be a good opportunity to give them a try and find out if there are hidden treasures in this mix.
I didn't start with a gestural setup which was a bit of an error for me because i ended up so close to the left hand side. Other than that I found this lesson enjoyable.
