Small Whorled Pogonia (isotria medeoloides) is an extremely rare plant in Massachusetts, and is listed as Thretened by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
I always "encourage" spiders to live in my plants as pest control. this one has been here for a few days.
Sometimes in wilderness areas, one needs reminders that insects are in fact wonderful creatures, and that just because some of them are horrendous pests doesn't mean to say we should tar them all with the same brush... Here is one such reminder!
This is another attempt at using a wide angle to show a nocturnal species within its habitat. This insect is a Leaf katydid (Typophyllum sp.) From the Ecuadorean Choco. The semblance to a leaf is incredible.. The wing cases are complete with leaf-like veining and imperfections.
These Katydids are frequently encountered at night, during the day, their cryptic pattern and shape keeps them well hidden.

I managed just one shot at it when a little girl came by, and said "mummy look at that lovely leaf" and promptly walked off with it!

It seems bees have take a shine to one of my trees. It takes a piece of a leaf and then comes back a couple of minutes later, so there must be a nest nearby
