marble doorsteps seen in Puglia, cathedral of Troia- a beautiful setting of a huge dome in the center of a small town. Iron and marble, not easy to combine... Japanese craftmen would have found a more elegant way of fixing, thinking of how ceramics are repaired with gold (kintsugi)... yes, the big earthquake is still on my mind, ideas spinning around fixing... :)

It is unclear whether this is a recovered archive from a lost mission, a distant planet, or an unknown civilization—whether it belongs to the future or the present, whether the events occurred near or far. Observations are catalogued, yet each entry drifts into the surreal, eroding any sense of objectivity. These records come from anonymous voice(s) attempting to describe encounters with phenomena that resist explanation.

“Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery") is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum... As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.”

The mends we make to our now can be one of our greatest features, for it shows our strength in marrying our weaknesses, and stitching them into our lives.

I hope that I can mend myself more with this gift of time. I hope that my piecing myself back together will be worth it, that the fabrics of my being can hold tight enough for me to do some good.

They learn many tips and assistant from the teacher dance near them to develop their environmental skills.

This class is aimed specifically at precious metals unicorns.

They stand out from the rest because they often take care of forest castles.

I was looking for something else in my inventory when I came across the "Shh!" set from Chabada. According to Marketplace* "You purchased this item on September 30, 2015" so it was about time I did something with it. I wasn't quite finished with the Kintsugi applier from KOSMII that I used back here because it's an item that really spoke to me.

A lot like I can't at the moment.

It's lovely to be back in Second Life after a long absence. I attribute to the restlessness I'm beginning to feel with this lockdown amid the global pandemic. It is rather comforting to know that despite the physical restrictions, I could still let my eyes and my mind travel to places beyond imagination. We SLers are so lucky.

In the myth of Prometheus, there are two brothers, Epithemeus and Prometheus. The first is what man has been for 10,000 years, the second is the hero we've been identifying with for 10,000 years. It would be a real elevation of the human species if we had any remorse.

This was taken as a contender for Macro Mondays Theme: Imperfect, however I decided it didn't quite fit the theme as its completely broken not just imperfect. Still liked it though so I'm posting it as well. I want to mend this small bowl using the Japanese visible mending technique, Kintsugi, to make it even more beautiful. HMM!

Appreciate your comments and favourites as always.

Spreads from Kintsugi, a series of interconnected zines I’m working on. It is meant to be read in any order. Like the art of mending pottery, its fractured narrative forms a whole through fragments—logs, memos, and entries from the Habitat and its inhabitants. Overseen by The Vault, they tend to the terrain and the Shells, blurring the line between human and machine, present and future, memory and repair.

I’m diving deeper and deeper into the surreal, sci fi world. Some of the images and text is done a long time ago. I’m now editing and putting it all together. It is all finally coming together!

This is a project commissioned by the Samaritans in Dublin to highlight how we all have flaws and cracks, but this doesn’t mean we’re broken.

Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese practice of repairing broken pottery with gold. As a metaphor for life, it shows us how to see the broken, painful parts of ourselves and others as an opportunity to add strength, beauty and character.

Kintsugi by Daragh Fleming

See, we believe that broken things can still be beautiful.

The cracks are how the light gets in.

And our light is golden.

You won't make it through life without scars, mistakes, broken bits and pieces.

You have to break the shell to get at what's beneath it.

So let's leave the light seep in through these crevices and crack on, paint our battles with ink from the sun, monuments to how far we've come.

We fill our cracks with gold around here.

"Kintsugi (or Kintsukuroi, which means “golden repair”) is the centuries-old Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with a special lacquer dusted with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. This repair method celebrates each artifact’s unique history by emphasizing its fractures and breaks instead of hiding or disguising them. Kintsugi often makes the repaired piece even more beautiful than the original, revitalizing it with new life."

I think this is a wonderful way to look at our own personal lifescars. We are all unique from our own history and I wish we could see this as the extraordinary value we bring with us ✨

From Japan - the art of embracing scars, and making broken things beautiful.

Lapis lazuli -- the the colour of the sky, the colour of the deeps. Flecked with golden stars, symbol of life, of healing, of love, of immortality. Are we not all made immortal in love?

Some outfits we put together quite quickly, some finally click... this one is one I've been playing with a lot over the past two years, I think: I keep having this idea, this vision, and elements finally came together.

See, lapis lazuli is one of my two favourite precious stones (the other being opal), and when I saw the Pure Abyss skin from Fallen Gods, I knew that I wanted to pair it with the Damned hieroglyph tattoo that I had gotten from them a couple of years prior. Last year I found the Kintsugi golden tattoo from kosmii at Fantasy Faire... and it all started to come together.

The Merith outfit is from Faida, and it's just perfect: the linen is revealing, and maybe hinting at a mummy's wrappings. I modified it just a little using the textures edit tab: I tinted the linen just a little to give it more of a 'natural' look (and less white), and I took all of the metal bands and collar, and dialed up the specular reflection to make them shine like gold.

Add a few more jewelry pieces, and then the piece-de-resistance: the Starfire wings from aii & ego. These are highly customisable, with an extensive HUD. I played around, and managed to create a gold that satisfied -- and then went back and adjusted all of the other gold trim and jewelry that I could so that they all had the same gold tone -- not too yellow, not too white.

This year I've added the lovely lapis-and-gold Leight (Anubis) horns from A Fantastical notion, found at Fantasy Faire. Again, I did a little editing to dial up the specular reflection on the gold. To be sure, they look amazing as is, I just wanted a really high gloss.

Am I finished? Hardly. But... I am very proud of my lapis goddess.

Of course... I got to Alia's Jail-and-Bail this year, and found myself somewhat 'scooped' -- but more on that story tomorrow.

This is Gertie the Goose. She had a broken neck. I have some help in the garden every couple of weeks and this break happened as my gardener gave her a bit of a slap round the ear. He was mortified. Also, for some weeks her head has been lying on the floor which was a bit upsetting. This week, I decided that I needed to repair her break. I haven’t quite finished but I have feathered the break to blend in. I used a two part epoxy putty which I often use for pots ( Milliput) and in this case I used the white version but I think the silver grey would have been better, if I could have found it. I didn’t move her as she is quite heavy. Now I need to add a little colour to either hide this or to emphasise it.

There is a Japanese art known as Kintsugi ("golden joinery"), also known as Kintsukuroi ("golden repair"). I have seen it used on pottery and indeed I do have a piece of Raku which needs a repair ( and was going to be my subject for today). The repair highlights the journey the piece has been on and in some cases I would say definitely enhances it. I’m unclear at present whether this would be right for Gertie though so I’m initially going to try to hide the repair and see how we go. My gardener came yesterday and was very pleased to see Gertie back together and with her head held high.

Getting caught up with a bunch of things - and I've finished the prizes for last year's Bio-Cup. The theme for this trio was Kintsugi.

The Kualsi is difficult to photograph, but it is my favorite.

Overthinking ...

Done at home, in my garden.

A mural by renowned street artist Joe Caslin, crafted in collaboration with Dublin Samaritans, was -unveiled in Dublin city centre earlier this year to help raise the profile of the charity’s work in helping people facing psychological distress.

The artwork, completed over five days by Caslin, is inspired by Kintsugi, a Japanese tradition of repairing cracked ceramics with gold dust and lacquer, incorporating the seams as part of the refined artwork. This was taken before the gold was applied.

The mural had an accompanying poem by Daragh Fleming.

The work “symbolises the celebration of imperfections and the belief that facing or overcoming struggles makes us more valuable and unique”, according to the Samaritans.

Dublin Samaritans is aiming to highlight its 116 123 phone line, available 24/7, 365 days a year and how “talking can help mend the cracks”.

The Trevor Carpenter Photo Challenge—Week 11, the Art of Embracing Damage

I couldn't bring myself to literally break anything I own, so like many other members of the group, I resorted to using Photoshop to try to create the look of a gold repair!

The yellow box on the left is, I think, what is called repoussé, or “embossed” metal, and it’s got to be brass, judging by the color, or perhaps an alloy with a lot of brass in it. It is very heavy and was made in the 1880s. It comes from my grandmother. The round thing in the center is a unusual lacquered wood and ceramic (the blueish part on top) Chinese box for opium and is supposedly 17th century. I was told once by a curator at the Musée Guimet in Paris that it is museum-caliber.

The other round thing, the one on the right, is extremely heavy (almost 3 kilos) and comes from Nepal. I reckon it is bronze. It is a set of measuring cups that fit into one another for storage like Russian dolls.

In the back, the black and gold thing is a kintsugi piece done by my wife. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of fixing broken items of pottery or china with a lacquer called urushi, mixed with powdered gold. Thus, what was broken is made whole again, and owing to its scars, more valuable than it was before —very symbolically Japanese.

The rusty, larger box is a personal lockbox from the late Middle Ages or early Renaissance. It is made of iron. It is essentially a small safe for jewellery and other precious personal belongings. It opens with a key but the location of the lock is very cleverly concealed. It has lost its front overlapping part, unfortunately, and so isn’t worth much, even though it is a period piece.

And as I felt the need for an item of color to top it off, the little round orange thing is a cardboard box from Hermès, in which they sell the small silk scarves they call “twillies”.

I only upload a small sized version here, but the full-size 8,300-pixel TIFF file has details that blow you away! This Z-mount 105 macro really is something!

Strobist and technical: One Phottix Pro Indra500 monolight on a Profoto light stand in lateral position to camera left, 1 meter from subject and 0.5 meter above it, firing at ¼ power through a Phottix Pro 150–cm Raja Deep parabolic softbox with double diffuser; and another Indra500 studio strobe on a Profoto light stand in Rembrandt position to camera right, 1.5 meters from subject and at about the same height, firing at ¼ power through a Phottix Pro 110–cm Luna octabox with double diffuser. Black paper backdrop.

Strobes set and triggered via Phottix Pro Odin II radio controller on the camera’s hot shoe, manual mode. Sekonic L–858D light meter used to balance light sources. Gitzo GT3543 XLS tripod with Arca–Swiss Cube C1 geared head. Nikon Z7 II camera body, Micro-Nikkor Z MC 105mm ƒ/2.8 macro lens.

Composite shot made of 16 focus-stacked exposures set using the built-in function in the camera. Stack processed with Helicon Focus software, Method B.

So, a lot of things change since my last flickr visit.

Our home is finished, we moved in on September 13th, and got to live in it for about two weeks, after which we moved back to Budapest, because Cristian got a job offer here.

This is one of the plates wanted to put on a kitchen wall, but I broke when I was arranging stuff in the kitchen. It is one of my favourites, so I decided to keep all the pieces and glue it back together, an imitation of Japanese kintsugi.

I'm sorry I did not get to finish the 365, but all the moves got too much to keep up with thisproject as well. Now that we've finally settled in our new place in Budapest, I'm going to do a "Mevember" in November, and maybe try again with the 365 in 2018.
