The Mountain Winery is located on the Saratoga hills overlooking Cupertino and the Silicon Valley, California. We went up there on an afternoon to shoot photos. The wine tasting lounge was just closing down when we arrived a few minutes after 5 PM. We sat at the gas fire pit. I took this shot of cracked glass with a 56 year old Canon 50mm f/0.95 vintage lens at f/0.95, resulting in this narrow depth of field.
Broken beauty has a deeper meaning in Japan. There is a word for it, Kintsugi, literally meaning "golden joinery". It is the art of accepting, or finding beauty in what is broken. If a bowl breaks, the broken pieces are joint together with gold. The bowl can be used again, this time with the esthetically beautiful pieces joint together with golden seams.
I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves.

Art has always been an easy way for me to channel my fears, my pain. I have found a special love for sl photography and combining the two, makes my soul feel a little more complete than yesterday.

I wasn't sure about the rough oozing of the golden glue to start with, but the more I look at similar pieces of Kintsugi, the more I find that I value the uniqueness, and the simplicity of such a mend.
The Japanese concept of Wabi Sabi - finding beauty in things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete, of things modest and humble, and of things unconventional.

I left this a bit too long in the sun. When I tried to pull it off of the glass, it ripped in two places. I was going to just throw it out, but then I remembered the art of Kintsugi in which something broken is put back together with a precious metal to form a transformed object that is more precious for its scars...this is my read on it anyway. I love the idea of precious scars. So, I purchased a set of liquid leaf paints. I used the liquid copper, and while I am no where near as proficient as someone who actually engages in the art of Kintsugi, I'm okay with the results. So, here's my print version of Kintsugi.

In any case, I feel good there, and it warms me up as soon as the morning breeze arrives.
In my opinion she is preparing another summer blanket because sometimes i see her going to her workshop to knit things.

P.S. This is one of my favorite globes, maybe because it has a pretty ribbon. But also because of the beautiful world inside it. Nature growing out and prevailing, giving birth to a new beginning. It makes me happy.
Birth is a never ending circle. There will always be new life fighting its way out to the surface and then fighting for survival. We sadly live in a world that does not appreciate life and majority seem to only cause its demise. There is also a small part of goodness, those who help others survive, those who nourish and help life grow and continue to live. They are the beacons of hope for our world.
The truth is, it’s not meant to be clear whether the inhabitants are human, artificial, or something in between—a future form that emerged after singularity, or simply humans on a distant mission, sometime ahead. Their world isn’t necessarily futuristic in the usual sense; rather, it reframes familiar, contemporary conditions through a future lens.
The Japanese art of Kintsugi, translates to "golden joinery", is the skill of transforming ugly breaks into beautiful fixes.
When the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when something's suffered damage and has a history it becomes more beautiful.
This unique small stained glass medieval roundel is located above the north door of Holy Trinity Church in Long Melford.
Although small, this roundel has, throughout the ages, been of enormous importance in the spiritual life of the church. The window depicts three hares, but only three ears can be seen. This is understood to represent the divine Trinity of God: three in one and one in three.
Due to damage during the Cromwellian era the window has required repair, but just as the Japanese art of Kintsugi makes the repaired object more beautiful and significant, so this window is a reminder that even the broken can be repaired and even through the broken beauty and light can shine!

Über die Geschichte dieser Vasen informierte eine Tafel: "Als die Künstlerin diese Vasen formte, bekam ihr Mann die Diagnose Alzheimer. An diesem Tag zerbrachen ihr alle Gefäße beim Brennen im Ofen. Youg-Jae Lee wollte die zerbrochenen Vasen wegwerfen. Doch ihre Freundin riet ihr, nichts wegzuwerfen, sondern ihre Geschichte zu erzählen. Die Brüche nicht zu verstecken, sondern sie zu zeigen - als einen Teil, der zu ihr und ihrem Leben gehört. So wurden die Vasen zu denen, die sie jetzt sind. Sie sind fragile, zerbrochene Gefäße, die kunstvoll wieder zusammengefügt wurden. Nicht so, dass man es nicht sieht, sondern im Gegenteil: Die Bruchstelllen werden nicht versteckt, sondern in der traditionellen Kintsugi-Technik mit Gold hervorgehoben. Es sind Kunstwerke, die auf den ersten Blick wohlgeformt sind und wie Gold glänzen. Auf den zweiten, tieferen Blick aber Verwundungen und Brüche nicht verschweigen."
This exhibition was a contribution by St. James' Church to the ‘Purple Path’ art and sculpture trail, an event organised as part of the Capital of Culture year. Chemnitz had been chosen as one of the two European Capitals of Culture for 2025. A plaque provided information about the history of these vases: "When the artist was shaping these vases, her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. On that day, all of her vessels broke while firing in the kiln. Youg-Jae Lee wanted to throw away the broken vases. But her friend advised her not to throw anything away, but to tell their story. Not to hide the breaks, but to show them – as a part of her and her life. That is how the vases became what they are now. They are fragile, broken vessels that have been artfully reassembled. Not in such a way that you cannot see it, but on the contrary: the breaks are not hidden, but highlighted with gold using the traditional kintsugi technique. They are works of art that at first glance appear well-formed and shine like gold. But at second glance, they do not conceal their wounds and breaks."

A Chinese-style decorative bowl. No provenance, so I'm not sure where it was made. Found in a Charity Shop. I originally bought the piece so I could break and repair it (as in Kintsugi), but I felt that defeats the objective of Wabi-sabi.
Lit with a single speedlite (Yongnuo YN560 III) in a large (2 ft Neewer) soft box.
