The brilliant red berries of this Cotoneaster shrub in my garden feed hungry birds and remind me to keep on going. Winter seems never-ending in this last week of January, but February is a short month - that gives me hope for spring.

Pete Rowbottom's LPOTY winner has remained etched in my mind since I first saw it. Now, whenever I go via Glencoe I pop to this spot to see if I can get anything half as good. Yesterday it was -7 deg C in Fort William, but I watched the temperature rising as I neared Glen Etive, dashing my hopes of frozen waterfalls. But instead of sinking into the usual six inches of dark squelchy mud on arrival I found everything frozen hard. I might have stayed longer, and tried different things to get a better result. But I needed to be in Edinburgh on time. The sky was disappointingly bright and sunny. I will try again, next time.
