KESENNUMA CITY, MIYAGI PREFECTURE, Japan - Okinawa-based Marines joined Japanese citizens for memorial ceremonies March 11 at Oshima Island and Kesennuma City in Miyagi prefecture, Japan, to commemorate the two-year anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami of March 11, 2011. Maj. Gen. Peter J. Talleri, commanding general of Marine Corps Installations Pacific, and other members of MCIPAC attended memorial ceremonies and met with key leaders from Oshima and Kesennuma City to discuss and celebrate recovery efforts in the area. The III Marine Expeditionary Force Band performed at a ceremony later in the day, accompanied by a Japanese gospel singer and local residents at Oshima Elementary School. Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit arrived to Oshima Island March 27, 2011, to conduct relief efforts in the wake of the disaster, including electricity restoration, debris removal, and distribution of basic necessities to residents. Miles Davis jazz trumpeter display profile for their luxurious writing instruments. I absolutely loved Bitches Brew, Porgy and Bess and other of his 33LP's when I was a teenager, so much so that I joined our high school Jazz Club.
This Great Characters Edition is honouring one of the most revolutionary and influential jazz musicians of all time – Miles Dewey Davis. He was not only a trumpeter with an outstanding sound but a pioneer in virtually every phase of the evolution of post-WWII American jazz, from cool jazz up to the rock-jazz-funk fusion, which finally got him inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The overall shape of the writing instrument is inspired by the trumpet, emphasized through the trumpet finger buttons on the clip, while the blue cone recalls ‘Kind of Blue’, one of the greatest jazz albums of all time. The pattern on the cap and barrel highlights the diverse movements Miles Davis represents: Jazz Fusion (Mixed shapes and techniques), Modal Jazz (Oriental), Hard Bop (African), Cool Jazz (Nonette) and Bebop. The cap ring with ‘2006’ engraving evokes his induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

Reality dissolves and perceptions change. You will never be the same. But though bones break easily and incisions run deep, kindred spirits run deeper. With Mr. Boy, a show of highly personal and enigmatic small works by Peter Carroll and Katherine Lorimer (aka Laser Burners and Luna Park), the pair put the bleak events of the past year behind them. Their mutual love for graffiti is a strong undercurrent in the work, but it’s hardly the sole source of inspiration. Unleashed over a sprawling mosaic of over one hundred, unique, square tiles, Mr. Boy reflects an insight into the people, places and memories that just might make life worth living…

A two-sided flyer is issued in November 1969 urging people to participate in the Revolutionary Contingent during the November 14-15, 1969 moratorium against the Vietnam War.
The flyer advertises two events in New York City and two in Washington, D.C.—a rally at Dupont Circle on November 14th and a rally at the U.S. Justice Department November 15th along with a rally in New Haven, CT.
The flier lists a number of demands, including ‘Free Bobby Seale,’ ‘Free the Panther 21,’ ‘No Draft for Imperialist Wars,’ ‘Support the PRG—U.S. Out of Vietnam Now,’ ‘Victory to the 10 Point Peace Program of the NLF,’ ‘Vietnam: Love it Or Leave it,’ ‘Unity with GI Struggles—Turn the Guns Around,’ ‘Freedom and Self-determination for all Women,’ ‘All power to all Oppressed People,’ ‘Occupation troops out of Black and Latin Communities,’ Stop the Conspiracy 8 Trial,’ ‘and Free All Political Prisoners.’
The massive Moratorium march in Washington, D.C. drew about 250,000 people in non-violent protest of the Vietnam War.
However, the evening before, the rally at Dupont Circle drew upwards of 15,000 people who attempted to march on the Republic of (South) Vietnam embassy. Clashes broke out with police who halted the march using tear gas and at one point drawing their pistols. The crowd responded with rocks and bottles and several Molotov cocktails.
After the main march the next day, upwards of 20,000 went to the U.S. Justice Department where windows were broken and clashes again erupted with police. Police again used tear gas while the protesters fought back with rocks and bottles.
The two Revolutionary Contingent actions during the Moratorium were among the most violent clashes of the Vietnam War era in the District of Columbia. The others were perhaps The Day After demonstration following the trial of the Chicago 8/7, clashes with police in Georgetown during the Mayday demonstrations and the 1972 battle at the foot of the U.S. Capitol in which police chief Jerry Wilson was struck repeatedly in the head with rocks.
