I joined fellow friend and County Moth Recorder Colin Plant for a wander around Hexton Chalk Pit on Sunday afternoon for a few hours, Colin had already done some field work there early afternoon, but with the windy conditions it was far from ideal.
It was however really mild and temperatures got to just shy of 21 degrees by 4pm.
It was great to see Cauchas fibulella still present amongst the Germander Speedwell, a quick few flicks of the net over the foodplant, yielded 2 examples
In total we saw..
1x Common Carpet
1x Grass Rivulet
1x Red Twin-spot Carpet
1x Green Carpet
3x Small Purple-barred
1x Cydia nigricana
2x Cauchas fibulella
4x Pyrausta nigrata
A few Dingy Skipper

Tesco and RSPB join forces to find their first ever ‘Rainforest Reporter’
London, 23rd February 2012: A combination of Tarzan, Lois Lane and David Attenborough might just be the perfect mix for those taking part in an exciting new competition.
‘Together For Trees’, the new environmental partnership between Tesco and the RSPB, has joined forces with Amazon conquering explorer Ed Stafford to launch a search for the first ever ‘Rainforest Reporter.’
One lucky winner will have the chance to travel to one of the rainforest projects set to benefit from the Together For Trees partnership and experience first-hand, the pioneering conservation work being done to protect these important places.
Ed Stafford, the European Adventurer of the Year, will lead the search to find the Together For Trees ‘Rainforest Reporter’, offering his insight into coping with harsh and unforgiving rainforest environments and mentoring the winning candidate before their trip.
Ed Stafford says: “After having spent two years in the Amazon, saving the world’s rainforests is an issue very close to my heart. I’ve witnessed first-hand the destruction of these beautiful areas, so was really delighted to be asked to be involved in Together For Trees. For me, it is important that people, for generations to come, get to experience the wonder, beauty and benefits that only rainforests can provide.”
Despite being home to more than two thirds of the planet’s land-based creatures, three quarters of all endangered bird species and with more than one billion of the world’s poorest people depending on them to survive, an area the size of a football pitch disappears every four seconds in the rainforest.
The winner will not only receive an amazing trip to see an endangered rainforest, but will also be given a thorough insight into the conservation projects in place, getting hands-on with the activities, allowing them to report back on the work being done via a series of blogs and videos which will be available at www.tesco.com/trees.
The Together For Trees expedition is an exciting opportunity for somebody fit, interested in conservation and a great communicator to report on their experience and highlight the issues facing the world’s rainforests. It’s not for the faint hearted; there are no luxury hotels or restaurants in the rainforest. The winner will experience the reality of staying in the heart of the rainforest and meet some of the locals – human and animal.
Tesco and RSPB today announced their brand new ‘Together For Trees’ partnership to help protect rainforests around the world. The UK’s biggest retailer and Europe’s largest wildlife conservation charity have teamed up to increase awareness of the growing deforestation crisis and raise essential funds to support on-the-ground conservation work to tackle the problem.
To enter applicants must visit www.tesco.com/trees and fill out the step by step entry form. Successful entrants from stage one will be invited back to a selection day at an RSPB nature reserve where they will be put through their paces in a series of small challenges. Five lucky applicants will then be chosen to progress to the final stage where they will meet a panel of rainforest experts in London with the final winner being chosen from this group. Full terms and condition are available on the website.

Pumps in the West India Dock Impounding Station
The Impounding Station was built in 1929 and is used to regulate water levels between the West India and Millwall Docks. The impounding station is the only source of water to West India Docks, outside the tidal run in, and it is in daily use. The Impounding Station is home to three pumps which provide the means for taking water from the River Thames and pumping it into the dock. The pumps are still the original ones installed 85 years ago and are capable of pumping up to 9 cubic metres of water per second. As an illustration of the rate at which the pumps operate, they would fill an Olympic size swimming pool in 9 minutes, and pumps around 4 million tonnes of water each year. The intake pipes draw water from a sump beneath the Impounding Station Building. The outfall pipes pass beneath Marsh Wall Road and their discharge is submerged within the Dock. Trash screens operate whenever the pump is running to protect the pump from debris entering from the river. Debris is discharged into a conveyor belt that empties into a skip. The Canal & River Trust has carried out automation and repairs to the pumps in the Impounding Station in Docklands over the last 12 months. This enables the pump to be operated remotely, although local operation can also be carried out.

On a visit to Kaiapoi looking for Giraffes November 28, 2014 New Zealand.
Kaiapoi is located approximately 17 kilometres north of central Christchurch, Kaiapoi takes its name from the Māori pā (fortified village) which was built just north of the site of the current town around the year 1700 by the Ngāi Tahu chief Turakautahi. Eventually to become the largest fortified village in the South Island it lay on the site of a stronghold of an earlier tribe, Waitaha whose history and traditions Ngāi Tahu eventually adopted.
Giant fibreglass Giraffe sculptures, reaching 2.5 metres high, are now standing tall on the streets, parks and public spaces of Christchurch and surrounding areas until 24 January 2015. At the end of the public art exhibition, in February, the Giraffes will be auctioned so we can all be part of raising money for local charities and turn the city’s Summer of fun into a helping hand for those who are in need.
