Jackie joined us from Prince Georges Animal Control, Maryland. Two Animal Control Officers drove her out to Rikki's Refuge. She's quite a bit younger than our other emus. At first it seemed like everyone would get along with her. But they refused to play. After a few days they started picking on her. Jackie is very friendly and loves to eat out of your hand. One morning the emus ganged up on her and beat her up.
We moved her into the sheep area where Mary the emu who doesn't like our other emus lives. I don't know why we were hoping that if Mary didn't like the emu gang and Jackie didn't get along with the emu gang, maybe Mary and Jackie would get along. They didn't. And it didn't take but a few minutes to see this was not going to work.
So Jackie moved up to a Day Room off the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center. At first she was startled to meet cats. And some of the cats were startled to meet her. Now they're all friends.
Rikki's Refuge - home of the misfits - you're all welcome here !!!!
These were the most obliging and accomodating fish you can imagine - they let me join their school and get right in amongst them without breaking formation! It was a real thrill, and I encountered them on several occasions and they were like, "oh well, come on then!" I have lots of photos of them, to come........
Yellowspot emperors - thanks Dave!

The feature-length documentary, "A Community of Gardeners," explores the vital role of seven community gardens in Washington, D.C. as sources of fresh, nutritious food, outdoor classrooms, places of healing, links to immigrants' homelands, centers of social interaction and oases of beauty and calm in inner-city neighborhoods. The film also traces the history of community gardens in the United States, from the potato patch farms of the late 19th century, to the victory gardens of World War II, to community gardening's current renaissance.
Before the screening, we will premiere, "Planting Community: The Story of Wangari Gardens," a five-minute documentary produced by Still Life Projects that tells the story of Josh Singer and his determination to reclaim an abandoned piece of land in DC's Park View neighborhood. The hurdles he faces along the way cause months of setbacks, but his vision of a community garden grows into something beyond what he even imagined.
The screenings will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with filmmaker Cintia Cabib, Josh Singer of Wangari Gardens, Kate Lee of the Brainfood Youth Garden, and Ryan Hill of Still Life Projects.
Stick around for a social hour, with complimentary drinks and treats.

GAZA CITY, Jun 2, 2010 (IPS) - The dispute between Hamas and Fatah has torn apart the people of Palestine, dividing and distracting them from their common quest for freedom and independence from Israeli military rule.
A piece I just finished with my freshest handcut design so far. Won't tell you how I made it...magic. Been watching that John Adams mini-series and thought I would make me an american design. It has a slight gold glow to the piece in person. Original TINDEL. 1/5 in series.
