Bishop Olmsted ordains diocese’s newest priest

Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted ordained Dan Vanyo to the priesthood June 2 at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral.
He joins 254 diocesan and religious priests who serve the Phoenix Diocese by offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, conferring the sacraments and overseeing aspects of parish life. Many of them were on hand to offer congratulations to their newest brother.
That included a handful of local priests and some from St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver who played key roles in Fr. Vanyo’s discernment. Fr. Vanyo, 43, began discerning his call to the priesthood at age 32 when a friend through a local Catholic singles group was discerning religious life.
“I never discerned anything,” Fr. Vanyo said. He researched some religious orders, but it wasn’t until a day for prospective diocesan seminarians that he reached a peaceful conclusion.
“They need help here,” Fr. Vanyo, then a hospice nurse, recalled thinking. “That’s when I gave the Lord my fiat. If you open the door, I’ll walk through it.”
He ran into Fr. Chauncey Winkler, who he knew from the local Catholic Retreat for Young Singles group and told him, “I think this is where I could be of some help.”
He entered the seminary in 2005 and was among a reported 487 ordinands nationally who will join the ranks of priesthood this year. Bishop Olmsted read from the Ordination Rite during Mass.
He reminded the crowd, including family and friends who filled the first row on both sides, that Jesus chose certain disciples to carry out publicly in His name, a priestly office. He reminded the diocese’s newest priest of his roles of Christ the teacher, priest and shepherd.
“Carry out the ministry of Christ the priest with constant joy and love,” the bishop said. He also challenged Fr. Vanyo to bring the people together in one family. That’s a challenge the priest plans to meet in his new home, Queen of Peace Parish in Mesa. He will serve as parochial vicar starting July 1.
“I am most excited that I will be able to hear people’s confessions. When the Holy Spirit touches the hearts of the penitents with His grace in the confessional, I will be blessed to be a witness to it,” Fr. Vanyo said.
In addition to a parish presence, Fr. Vanyo will serve as chaplain at Seton Catholic Preparatory High School in Chandler. Fr. Vanyo will offer his first liturgy, a Mass of Thanksgiving, at his home parish Holy Cross in Mesa, at 10 a.m. June 3.

I had the opportunity to join the Moken people for a prayer ceremony . The Moken or Sea Gypsies live a nomadic life in the Andaman Sea , from Malaysia to Burma . On this day they came to pray for a sick child and then celebrate the area of their ancestors . It has taken a few years to gain the respect and be privileged to such an event . I was surprised that they gave me permission to Photograph this ceremony . I have said that the Moken are an endangered species in that their way of life will die from loss of habitat . So I will indeed remember this event for the remainder of my life . I only hope that my photos do them justice .

[Mike didn't know he was eligible to be a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. If he had, he wouldn't have joined, but he would have bought a tri-cornered hat and a sword to wear to parties. Another skit would have been added to his repertoire.]
Col. Stephen Balliet, my GGGG uncle, served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
He fought under General Washington at the Battles of Germantown and Brandywine, and after the American defeat there, he led the men who brought the Liberty Bell into Allentown from Philadelphia. On July 7, 1776 he took the original copy of the Declaration of Independence to Easton, protecting the Bell and the Declaration from invading British troops.
A first-generation American, third child of Paulus Balliet and Maria Woodring Balliet, Stephen after the war served as
-- Agent for Forfeited Estates (responsible for identification of people disloyal to the new Nation during the war, and for the confiscation of their property),
-- Member, Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania -- 1783
-- Member, Board of Property, 1784
-- Federal Revenue Collector, 9th district, 1788-1789.
He was also a local merchant and farmer.
Col. Balliet died in the family homestead in 1821 and is buried with his wife in Neffs, at Unionville Church. His brother, John, my GGG grandfather on my mother's side, settled the Conygnham (Sugarloaf) Valley outside Hazleton, PA.
John and Stephen were the children of Paulus (16-Aug-1716 Schalbach), who was the son of Stefan Balliet, a colonel in the French army. Paulus emigrated to the US and ran a trading post, general store and stage coach stop near Allentown, in what would come to be called Ballietsville. He was called "Bowl Balliet" because his native American customers were not allowed to drink from glasses -- only from wooden bowls. The original trading post burned in the late 1700's, but its replacement still stands today.
Stefan Balliet, father of Paulus, was married at Burbach, Alsace Apr-26-1707 to Maria Catherina Schweitzer, daughter of Nicholas Schweitzer of Schalbach. They had a son -- Paulus -- and several daughters, one of whom was Maria. Paulus and Maria emigrated to America.
Paulus became the founder of the Balliets of Whitehall (Ballietsville), and Maria became the wife of Johannes Solt in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.
Stefan Balliet and wife, Mary Catherine (Schweitzer) Balliet of Schalbach, appear with their nine children in the Reformed church records of Diedendorf pertaining to Schalbach after 1723.
Several of Stefan's children emigrated to Pennsylvania. He lived between 1680 and 1742.

The 29-year-old actress will guest-star in 10 episodes, playing a mysterious woman who forms a special relationship with Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) in the wake of his wife's death.

Best known for her roles in 10 Things I Hate About You and Save the Last Dance, Stiles most recently appeared on Broadway in a 2009 production of David Mamet's Oleanna.
The new season of dexter 1-4 begins shooting this month and will premiere in the fall on Showtime.
