BOB HOLMAN 60th BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE
Join us in celebrating and honoring BOB HOLMAN on his 60th birthday. A key figure in creation of a new and more inclusive American poetry, bringing to it a totally new populist energy, Holman most recently has been the driving (and founding) spirit behind the ultra-active Bowery Poetry Club in NYC and spearheaded The World of Poetry (worldofpoetry.org), the first digital poetry anthology. He is author of A Couple of Ways of Doing Something, with Chuck Close (Art of This Century/Pace); Beach Simplifies Horizon (Grenfell); Bob Holman's The Collect Call of the Wild (Holt); and co-editor of The United States of Poetry (Abrams), an anthology accompanying the Public TV series featuring over sixty poets. NOVO SELO, Bulgaria — U.S. and Bulgarian military personnel joined together for two symbolic ceremonies Sept. 27 and 28 as exercise Lion Strike came to an end.
First, Joint Task Force-East celebrated the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a humanitarian project at a kindergarten in Mokren, Bulgaria. Eleven U.S. Navy personnel from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 40, otherwise known as SeaBees, finished an extensive renovation of the school during the exercise.
The children from the school, along with parents, teachers, school director, local officials and U.S. and Bulgarian military personnel, crowded the small courtyard during the ceremony.
"We say in the United States that the children are our future," said Army Lt. Col. Bruce Sones, commanding officer for JTF-E "Lion Strike".
"We hope through the efforts of those involved in this project that the improved environment created for teaching the children will contribute to the children's development as they grow and become leaders in your society."
The school director, Margarita Nicolova, thanked the SeaBees and then presented them with a picture painted by the children, a CD of Bulgarian folk music, a photo of the children and a glass vial filled with Bulgarian soil.
Of the soil, she said, "Wherever you go, you know you'll have a piece of Bulgaria with you."
The school children then sang several songs for the audience and the ribbon was cut. But, there was another surprise for the children, a HMMWV full of gifts. All of the soldiers, sailors and airmen participating in the exercise had contributed money to buy much-needed school supplies and educational toys for the school.
"We will maintain what you have done, and promise to continue with improvements," said Emil Enchev, mayor of Mokren. "Hopefully we will continue working together in the future."
The next day, all JTF-E "Lion Strike" participants, both U.S. and Bulgarian, came together again, this time to commemorate the end of the exercise during the closing ceremony.
During the ceremony Sones and Col. Biser Kalinov, chief of Training, Bulgarian Land Forces, presented certificates of achievement to 14 U.S. Soldiers and 16 Bulgarian soldiers for their efforts during the exercise.
"During this training, we had the opportunity to gain military experience from the leading force in NATO - the United States Military, and to show that while representing a small army, the Bulgarian officers, Non-commissioned officers and soldiers are honorable partners and excellent professionals," said Kalinov, who spoke first during the ceremony.
He was followed by Sones, who echoed Kalinov's feelings.
"This closing ceremony does not mark the end of a training opportunity or a farewell to relationships fostered," said Sones.
"In our minds, it marks the hopeful commencement of future training opportunities to be conducted between our nations."
"We can truly say the professionalism and generosity of the Bulgarian Land Forces is unrivaled," he continued.
"We know the strong relationship between the United States and Bulgaria, as demonstrated during this exercise, will continue to grow, and we look forward to training and serving with you in the years to come."

When 18 he joined the US marine corps, after saying goodbye to his girlfriend for the next 5 years. Each day he wrote a letter to her but she never wrote one back. After 5 years went past he was let go to go home. But when he got home he found his girlfriend cheating on him, he was so pissed that he was gonna kill that guy. So one day when that guy came out of the house, Kenny was standing on his lawn with his .44 magnum revolver. When he turned to run into the house again Kenny pulled the trigger and shot him in the back of the head. When people started hearing about this, they came to him asking if he could assassinate people that they hate. He did it and they paid him until the police caught on to him. So now hes living in northern Alaska where no one can find him until he makes a comeback.

Secretary Landgraf and Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay were joined by state Sen. Bruce Ennis and Reps. Ruth Briggs-King, Dave Wilson and Harvey Kenton in recognizing the 20th anniversary of Delaware’s Statewide Trauma System. “No matter where in Delaware someone suffers a traumatic injury, they enter into the same system of care,” Secretary Landgraf said. “We are only a handful of states to have an inclusive statewide trauma system.”
Dr. Rattay said the state’s trauma system is credited with saving 1,319 lives and caring for 101,000 seriously injured people since 2000, an almost 50 percent decrease in the mortality rate in that time. The Delaware mortality rate is now consistently lower than the national rate reported by the federal National Trauma Data Bank.
Fourteen individuals who have 20 years of continuous service to the trauma system were honored at the ceremony in the House chambers at Legislative Hall:

Sen. Ennis, who advocated for and helped to push through the enabling legislation, read a joint resolution recognizing the trauma system’s anniversary. Rep. Kenton in honoring Sen. Ennis’ role in creating the trauma system said, “We’ll never know, Senator, how many lives you saved.” Rep. Briggs-King in praising the statewide system of care said, “For a small state, you’ve made a huge statement.”
Trauma survivor Melanie Pertain shared how the system helped her and her family after they were involved in a serious motor vehicle crash on Concord Pike in 2013. “I received tremendous care in the ER and then the OR after we were transported to Christiana Hospital,” said Pertain, who spent two weeks in the surgical ICU after suffering a traumatic brain injury and other injuries in the accident. “My new mantra is ‘Be grateful, not hateful.’”

Similarities create friendships while differences hold them together.
Photographically speaking, I've been in a dry spell. But my friend Ella mentioned she'd like a photo of a red veggie to add to a collection she has on her kitchen wall. Motivated by a last-minute invitation to join them for drinks on Christmas Eve, I grabbed the dried red peppers that were hanging in the pantry, placed them on an image of a texture that I had resized and printed, and took a few shots. Afterwards, when I was processing them I thought, hmmmm these remind me of old friends. Hence, the search for a quote about friends and their differences and similarities. I got lucky, not just in finding the perfect saying, but also in having such good friends and having peppers to shoot.
