IMO Secretary-General Lim was in attendance as UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon marked the formation of the UN in London, UK, with a full house of students and diplomats (5 February). Speaking in Central Hall Westminster, where the first UN Secretary-General was appointed 70 years ago, Mr. Ban addressed issues including climate change, the need for more women in global leadership roles, and the migrant crisis. IMO contributes to these and many more global issues, and has been joining the rest of the UN family in celebrating the 70th birthday - see here:

HUMPHREYS GARRISON — Joining millions of people around the world, about 250 members of the U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys community, along with 100 students and adults from Pyeongtaek City, participated in Make a Difference Day by helping to clean up Deog Dong San City Park, in Pyeongtaek, Oct. 23.
According to Denise Chappell, the Army Community Service volunteer coordinator and project officer for the event, “Make a Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others; a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors.”
The program was created by USA Weekend Magazine 20 years ago and has become an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of October.
This was the third year in a row that the garrison partnered with the local community to participate in the program.
At the park, volunteers from the Bright Society-Goodwill, Cooperation and Service Shinhan High School Chapter, Pyeongtaek City’s Park and Green Belt Management Division and People-to-People International Shinhan High School Chapter, were waiting with gloves and trash bags, ready to get started.
In addition to picking up trash, there was also a need to help build a nicer walking trail, which required some of the volunteers to carry stone and shale, which were leveled out by other helpers. This was used to provide better traction for those who walk the trail on a regular basis.

I took this photo through the plane window on a flight between Phoenix and Salt Lake City. The aircraft was banking sharply to the left at the moment. When I saw the result, I immediately thought of the foregoing poem.
All my life, I have loved to fly. I took my first airplane flight on May 2, 1965, shortly before my 12th birthday, when I flew round-trip from Reno, Nevada to San Francisco. I simply flew there, then turned around and flew back. The ticket, paid for out of my earnings from my paper route, cost me $25.99, and the aircraft was a twin-engine propeller-driven job owned by United Airlines -- similar, but not identical, to the DC-3. Recently I learned that Alan Shepard, who later became the first American in space and still later hit a golf ball on the moon, had a very similar first flight experience when he was about 15.
I think if I fly a thousand times during my lifetime, I will never lose my sense of wonder at the miracle of flight. And although we take it for granted nowadays, the airplane is still a relatively recent invention. I was born during the 50th-anniversary year after the Wright Brothers successfully tested their flimsy craft on the windswept dunes of Kitty Hawk, and in that same year of 1953, the jet age was just beginning. Could the Wright Brothers, in 1903, possibly have imagined the long-term consequences of their work?

Re-enactment of a scene in Disney's ''Oz The Great and Powerful''. China Girl pleads with the Wizard to join in the hunt for the Wicked Witch, and he finally relents. China Girl 4'' mini doll and Oz (Oscar Diggs) 12'' doll, both by the Disney Store.
Description of each shot in this re-enactment (which is a condensed version of the movie scene):
Shot #1: China Girl - ''But, I want to go with YOU."
Shot #2: Oz - ''On a witch hunt? Nah, you're just a little girl.''
Shot #3: China Girl - ''I'm coming with you!''
Shot #4: China Girl, after Oz says no, starts crying - "You're going to leave me, alone? On a road, in the middle of nowhere?''

Join Voices Against Brain Cancer (VABC) in the spirit of the late NYRR president Fred Lebow (1932-1994) and all others who have fought brain cancer and brain tumors. VABC was founded by the Lichtenstein Family in loving memory of their son and brother, Gary, who lost his battle with brain cancer in 2003. The mission of VABC is to find a cure for brain cancer by advancing scientific research, increasing awareness within the medical community, and supporting patients, their families and caregivers afflicted with this devastating disease.
Over 110 volunteers joined UrbanPromise on Saturday, November 17 to assist with demolition and renovation projects at St. Wilfrid's Episcopal Church in the city of Camden. Volunteers included adults, teens, and children from Ann's Love Builds of Media Presbyterian Church, FCA of South Jersey, Pedro Guzman of San Andres in Camden, the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township, and Princeton University's lacrosse team. The group gutted the church's house, painted the church, cleaned the yard and trimmed bushes, and fixed broken windows and old pews.
The house on the St. Wilfrid's property, which has been generously donated to UrbanPromise, saw 750 hours of service--which amounts to around $10,000 in work hours saved!
Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), a senior member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and Chairman Edward Kennedy’s chief deputy for health care reform, joined President Obama today as he signed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act into law. Dodd introduced the bill with Chairman Edward Kennedy and shepherded it through committee consideration and debate on the Senate floor.
“Connecticut parents work hard to educate their kids about the dangers of smoking. But tobacco companies aren’t on their side, and too often, Big Tobacco wins the battle,” said Dodd. “Each year, 15,000 Connecticut kids smoke their first cigarette – and 76,000 Connecticut children alive today will eventually die from a smoking related illness. As the father of two young daughters, I find that outrageous. And I’m glad that we’ve taken this critically important and long overdue step to empower parents and prevent tobacco companies from turning our kids into addicts.”

Greenpeace activists joined a 15-foot tall monster in a visit to Nestlé’s headquarters in Arlington, Virginia delivering Nestlé plastic pollution gathered from streets, rivers, and beaches across the country and demanding that Nestlé take responsibility for the over 1.5 million metric tons of single-use plastic it produces annually. “It’s time for Nestlé to end its reliance on single-use plastics and move toward systems of reuse,” said Greenpeace Plastics Campaigner Kate Melges, who helped return the plastics to the company. “Nestlé has created a monster by producing endless quantities of throwaway plastics that persist in our environment for lifetimes. It’s time for the company to own its mess and stop pushing false solutions that will never solve this crisis.”
