This was drawn on the open momument day and I’d hoped I could go up the tower for a view of the city but it was shut so I drew the view of the interior.
This was hard work. I thought I could get the whole building on one page in one sitting, in the end it was scattered over 5 pages. I had to go back twice to finish the sketch. Trams kept stopping in the view. And it kept raining. And it was cold.

I like to take walks in my suburban neighbourhood. Although my route is sometimes repetitive, the scenery changes with the seasons and the weather to make it interesting. This scene is from a series of photos that I took on a recent walk when I was searching to find scenes to sketch. My sketch attempts to illustrate a crisp winter morning on a street near my home. While the scene may not be breath-taking, the temperature was!
J'aime me promener dans mon quartier résidentiel. Même si mon itinéraire est parfois répétitif, le paysage change au fil des saisons et de la météo, ce qui le rend intéressant. Cette scène est tirée d'une série de photos prises lors d'une récente promenade, alors que je cherchais des sujets à dessiner. Mon croquis tente d'illustrer un matin d'hiver frais dans une rue près de chez moi. Si le paysage n'est pas à couper le souffle, la température, elle, l'était !
I had just visited Yuki Horikoshi so afterwards I was inspired to leave some negative space in this sketch.

The regional TV channel, SWR, asked if they could do a report on me as an urban sketcher. They concentrated on people in Weststadt in Karlsruhe and I was lucky enough be be included. They liked my series of sketches drawn from high buildings. The Christuskirche vicar was great letting me and the film crew use the tower. We were climbing up and down the narrow spiral staircases and gang planks lots of times to get all the film material needed for the report. Annette Krause interviewed me, she was very friendly and professional but I was extremely nervous. They broadcast at 8:15 pm on 29th February. Here's a link to the report:

A passing local told me this was her favourite part of the town. I said that I loved the cobbles. She said “only with flat soled shoes”.
Looking out my window, I notice things that take place at regular moments throughout the day almost like clockwork. I'm not alluding to sunrises and sunsets, although these are obvious measures of the day. What I'm referring to are things like the neighbourhood kids walking to school in the early morning, a retired senior cycling after breakfast, the postman delivering the mail around noon and people dutifully walking their dogs at particular moments. Clockwork events. They give a kind of rythm to the day. For example, while I'm reading the news on my iPad at 9:00 am, I've regularly noticed two guys walking their pooch in front of my house. This has gone on repeatedly through summers and winters, maybe pausing briefly when the weather turned particularly bad. Strange as it may seem, this unique clockwork activity prompted me to make this drawing.

En regardant par ma fenêtre, je remarque des choses qui se répètent à heures fixes tout au long de la journée, comme sur une horloge. Je ne parle pas des levers et couchers de soleil, bien qu'ils marquent clairement le rythme de la journée. Je fais référence aux affaires comme les enfants du quartier qui vont à l'école à pied tôt le matin, à un retraité qui fait du vélo après son petit-déjeuner, au facteur qui distribue le courrier vers midi et aux gens qui promènent consciencieusement leur chien à des heures précises. Les routines d'horloge. Elles donnent une sorte de rythm à la journée. Par exemple, quand je lis les actualités sur mon iPad à 9 h, j'ai régulièrement remarqué deux hommes promenant leur chien devant chez moi. Cela s'est répété été comme hiver, avec peut-être une brève interruption lors des épisodes de grand mauvais temps. Aussi étrange que cela puisse paraître, cette activité qui se repete comme un horloge m'a incité à réaliser ce dessin.
