Ink drawing made by snow and trees

I was overwhelmed what to draw in this amazing place. In which direction to look and what to leave out and emphasise. I also wanted to do as many sketches as possible to make the most of the trip, putting pressure on myself.

I kept stopping drawing due to snow showers.

The neighbour came out to chat, he thought I was working for the council.

Rain stopped the first attempt drawing this view, sat behind a wall on the breakwater sheltering from the wind.

At this time of year, my woodshed is usually full. Mind you, I don't burn a lot of wood but I do enjoy a fire now and then on weekends or when it's extremely cold. I was spoilt this year when my neighbour took it upon himself to split my logs which were too large for my woodstove. I've had health issues over the past year and my neighbour's offer was much appreciated. Regarding my drawing, the lines that I drew for the snow were meant to illustrate the shadows and drifts of snow. It was a challenge and might have been easier to create as a watercolour or oil painting. But what fun would that have been? ;)

À cette période de l'année, mon abri à bois est généralement plein. Certes, je ne brûle pas beaucoup de bois, mais j'aime bien faire un feu de temps en temps, la fin de semaine ou quand il fait très froid. J'ai été gâté cette année : mon voisin a eu la gentillesse de fendre mes bûches qui était trop grosses pour mon poêle. J'ai eu des problèmes de santé ces derniers temps et son geste m'a été très précieux. Quant à mon dessin, les traits que j'ai tracés pour la neige étaient censés d'illustrer les ombres et la neige entassée par le vent. C'était un défi, et il aurait peut-être été plus facile de le réaliser à l'aquarelle ou à l'huile. Mais cela aurait-il été amusant ? ;)

These men were told the table was reserved. They replied “Now we’re here”.

On a bike ride earlier this week, I stopped to sketch this willow tree in the Dominion Arboretum next to Dow's Lake in Ottawa. It was a sunny but fairly cold day at 6 C with a brisk wind. At this time of year, most of the trees have long shed their foliage and there's a grey starkness in the landscape. However, the willow trees were still in fine shape with their long green leafy branches adding a splash of colour to the panorama. The thick bark on this particular tree was fascinating and I thought that it would make a good subject for a sketch.

Lors d'une balade à vélo plus tôt cette semaine, j'ai arrêté pour dessiner ce saule dans l'Arboretum Dominion à côté du lac Dow à Ottawa. C'était une journée ensoleillée mais assez froide à 6 C avec un vent vif. À cette époque de l'année, la plupart des arbres ont depuis longtemps perdu leur feuillage et il y a une austérité grise dans le paysage. Cependant, les saules étaient toujours en pleine forme avec leurs longues branches feuillues vertes ajoutant une touche de couleur au panorama. L'écorce épaisse de cet arbre particulier était fascinante et j'ai pensé que cela ferait un bon sujet pour un croquis.
