Drawn from Kanonen Bar. The waitress said that I have to draw quickly, the sun will disappear at 2:30 pm. She also said leave out the crane, it’ll look better without it!

The first snowfall of last week still lingers in certain parts of the Ottawa-Gatineau. While the streets and sidewalks have been snow-free for a while, lawns seem to have kept a thin crust of the white stuff to remind us that winter approaches. While waiting during my wife's appointment, I parked in downtown Ottawa and sketched MacDonald Gardens Park - a park with a pavilion on top of a hill. It was quiet. In a strange sort of way, the autumn cold kept most strollers away but the winter cold and deep snow had yet to arrive and attract the tobboganers on the hill!

I was overwhelmed what to draw in this amazing place. In which direction to look and what to leave out and emphasise. I also wanted to do as many sketches as possible to make the most of the trip, putting pressure on myself.
Drawn with Karlsruhe, Mannheim and Saarland Urban Sketchers.
This commisioned sketch took a while to draw. The longer I sat there I noticed more and more details in the facade. Then I got too cold and had to finish. The next time I came it started raining. To be able to finish the sketch before the deadline, I asked a friend who lives in the same street if he could take some shots of the building and mail them. I hardly ever use photos for my sketches so I felt I was cheating.
I had to draw the evening sun lighting up the globes but I was stoolless but managed to find a wall to sit on at almost the best position.
This took a few attempts to finish between the snow showers. I’m not sure if these were tiled or slate roofs.
The waiter told us that a few months ago football hooligans systematically smashed all these Art Nouveau windows.
