I didn’t want to use cross hatching, but just use the brick courses to get the darkness.

I was on my way to draw something else but I had to stop and capture this before it disappears. A moment of Durlach history.

I saw this the previous day and hoped it would still be there when I had the chance to draw it.

Bit too much black; I should of divided the monument from the trees.

This was a commisioned drawing.It was one metre long. As I sat sketching on the busy bridge, blokes in passing cars would shout to me. When there was a jam, they’d be quiet! No idea what they shouted.

The owner of the palace is standing in the door after giving us an excellent tour of the building. Her marxist art commune didn’t work out as planned and the palace is up for sale.

Before I came to Amsterdam, I had this view in my head. Plenty oy opportunities to draw 17th century houses, next to a canal, with bikes.

This is a reproduction of A.Y. Jackson's Winter Night that I made as free-hand ink drawing. Jackson (1882-1974) was a Canadian landscape painter and original member of the Group of Seven. In 1925, along with other members of the Group, he created four small lithographs for an exhibition. The lithograph which I copied, called Winter Night, was 13 x 16.5 cm (5.5 x 6.75 inches) in size and limited to 100 printings. It doesn't depict a specific location like many of Jackson's oil paintings but reflects his interest in winter landscapes. Apparently he made an oil painting inspired by this lithograph, but I haven't been able to locate it. Point-au-Persil is as close a scene as I can find. While Jackson is mostly remembered for his oil paintings, he began his art training in Montreal lithograph companies. He's known to have made about 40 lithographs over his lifetime. I liked this lithograph because it captures the landscape that we now find in Ottawa-Gatineau. The darkness of the sky and trees are clearly delineated. It's a beautiful small piece that allowed me to learn something about Jackson's style while I made this reproduction. (Incidentally, my new sketchbook was able to take the large amounts of ink that I used without showing up on the reverse side. And the lines didn't bleed on the paper.)

Voici une reproduction de « Nuit d'hiver » d'A.Y. Jackson, que j'ai réalisée à main levée à l'encre. Jackson (1882-1974) était un peintre paysagiste canadien et membre fondateur du Groupe des Sept. En 1925, avec d'autres membres du groupe, il créa quatre petites lithographies pour une exposition. Celle que j'ai reproduite, intitulée Nuit d'hiver, mesurait 13 x 16,5 cm et était limitée à 100 exemplaires. Contrairement à nombre de ses peintures à l'huile, elle ne représente pas un lieu précis, mais reflète son intérêt pour les paysages d'hiver. Apparemment, il a réalisé une peinture à l'huile inspirée de cette lithographie, mais je n'ai pas réussi à la localiser. Point-au-Persil est la scène la plus proche que j'aie pu trouver. Bien que Jackson soit surtout connu pour ses peintures à l'huile, il commença sa formation artistique dans des ateliers de lithographie montréalais. On sait qu'il a réalisé une quarantaine de lithographies au cours de sa vie. J'ai particulièrement apprécié cette lithographie car elle capture les paysages que l'on retrouve aujourd'hui dans la région d'Ottawa-Gatineau. Le ciel et les arbres, sombres, sont nettement délimités. C'est une jolie petite œuvre que j'ai pris plaisir à reproduire et qui m'a permis de mieux comprendre le style de Jackson. (Mon nouveau carnet de croquis a absorbé les grandes quantités d'encre que j'ai utilisées sans que cela ne transparaît au verso. De plus, les traits n'ont pas bavé sur le papier.)

There was a forest fire this year.

On a bike ride earlier this week, I stopped to sketch this willow tree in the Dominion Arboretum next to Dow's Lake in Ottawa. It was a sunny but fairly cold day at 6 C with a brisk wind. At this time of year, most of the trees have long shed their foliage and there's a grey starkness in the landscape. However, the willow trees were still in fine shape with their long green leafy branches adding a splash of colour to the panorama. The thick bark on this particular tree was fascinating and I thought that it would make a good subject for a sketch.

Lors d'une balade à vélo plus tôt cette semaine, j'ai arrêté pour dessiner ce saule dans l'Arboretum Dominion à côté du lac Dow à Ottawa. C'était une journée ensoleillée mais assez froide à 6 C avec un vent vif. À cette époque de l'année, la plupart des arbres ont depuis longtemps perdu leur feuillage et il y a une austérité grise dans le paysage. Cependant, les saules étaient toujours en pleine forme avec leurs longues branches feuillues vertes ajoutant une touche de couleur au panorama. L'écorce épaisse de cet arbre particulier était fascinante et j'ai pensé que cela ferait un bon sujet pour un croquis.
