Inktober 2023
Day 6
GOLDEN
This year, I will try to make INKTOBER drawings based on popculture, drawn without sketching first.
I used to watch all the old James Bond movies as a kid with my dad. I loved them... I still love watching them.
The Man with the Golden Gun was one of my favorites. Perhaps not the best drawing so far, but that is how I roll.

"Are you standing outside?
Looking up at the sky
Cursing a wandering star
Well if I were you
I'd throw rocks at the moon
I'd say "Damn you wherever you are"
...."

** the jade and topaz really pop in real life. I can't scan those two colours for the life of me. In real life the colours mingle to form an amazing teal.

Fun morning with the Brisbane Urban Sketchers at South Bank. I really love drawing the Moreton Bay Fig Tree trunks.. Can you find the water dragon?
Greetings from Barcelona.
I have been having an excellent time here and am off to Dublin in a few hours. There is sure to be a shock to the system as we have experienced nothing but sunshine and hot, humid weather (30C+) since we arrived.
Here is a sample page from my travel / art journal, daily drawing #313. We were at the beach in Sitges, on the outskirts of Barcelona for a day. There will be a proper photo / drawing dumping upon my return.

Gouache and ink on Steinbach paper.
"We're playing those mind games together
Pushing the barriers planting seeds
Playing the mind guerrilla
Chanting the Mantra peace on earth
We all been playing those mind games forever
Some kinda druid dudes lifting the veil
Doing the mind guerrilla
Some call it magic the search for the grail..."
MIND GAMES - John Lennon, 1973.

"Oh little Jeannie, you got so much love, little Jeannie
But you're burning it up so fast, searching for some lasting truth..."

Sultans Of Swing
Music & lyrics by Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler 1978
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You get a shiver in the dark
It's a rainin' in the park, but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowin' Dixie double four time
You feel alright when you hear the music ring...
And now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Comin' in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Competition in other places...
Oh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on down south, way on down south London town
You check out Guitar George, he knows all the chords
But he's strictly rhythm he doesn't wanna make it cry or sing
They've said an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doin' alright
He can play the honky tonk like anything
Savin' it up, Friday night...
With the Sultans... with the Sultans of Swing
And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn 'bout any trumpet playing band
It ain't what they call rock and roll
And the Sultans... yeah the Sultans, they play Creole
Creole
Uh huh
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
'Goodnight, now it's time to go home'
And he makes it fast with one more thing
'We are the Sultans... We are the Sultans of Swing'

Note: ...it was just a fun thing to do :) Of course....the actual painting was done by Vermeer, a contemporary of Rembrandt, but I couldn't shake this particular idea/image loose from my head. Muses are tricky that way ;)

ink on some kind of fancy vellum paper- and yes, im talking about the easily smeared ink pens those old people used way back then. ;D

So today I was playing around with the inks from the June Sampler I received from www.gouletpens.com/
....aside from being highly impressed with this economical way to test ink colours, I am equally pleased with the selection.
My criteria is going to be different from those who use the inks for writing purposes....but then you already know that if you've been paying attention to my work.
Okay so this tree combines 3 of the 5 samples: Diamine Salamander, Private Reserve Ebony Brown and Platinum Free-mix Earth Brown with:
~ Noodler's Golden Brown + Rohrer & Klingner Alt-Goldgrun
They all work REALLY well together. They work so well that I think I need to go draw more trees....that was fun.
