A local went back to her house to give me the contact info of the house owner!

Oh DO go on. You were saying something about 'being a black cat means having impunity to bad luck'... particularly on Friday the 13th.

Inspiration: Barcelona

Result: Day 1

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Sakura Micron 005 & Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils in a Stillman & Birn Zeta series sketchbook

Location: apartment in Barcelona

Note: The next 23 drawings are reflections of my trip to Spain, Dublin and Scotland. It's a combination sketchbook / journal. Not all of the pages contain writing ....those are yet to be filled in because while I did make a point of doing a drawing every day I really didn't have time to also fill in the blanks with words...those are to come. I just needed to get these posted so I could get my daily drawings back on track. :)

Il Jouait Du Piano Debout

Musique & paroles France Gall & Michel Berger

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: The red dot of a laser pointer is to a cat, what spotting a squirrel is to a dog. Soon the mice will figure out .....it doesn't just distract cats, it embarrasses them. Feline pride goes OFF. THE. RAILS!.

Raynutius

In Nomine Sancte et Indiuidue trinitatie [sic?] patris et

filij et spiritussancti Amen Nouerint vniuersi

[The first line comes from the hymn "Ave fuit prima salus". "Raynutius" may be a name (> "Rinucci"?) or refer to a chapter of canon law known by the name of one of the litigants in the case that gave rise to it. The sketch of three horses appearing above the trinitarian formula of the signum crucis might possibly refer to the passage in St. Augustine's work De Trinitate (book 7, chapter 3) where he uses three horses as an example in discussing the meaning of the word "person" as it refers to the Christian God. Or they could just be a sketch of three horses.]

Note: One of my favorite books as kid, is the long out of print novel, Blue Boy. It's about a child named Collin and his beloved kitten, Blue Boy. One day the feline vanishes while exploring the old house the family had recently moved into. The adults think the young cat is lost forever, but in fact he had become stuck inside the walls of the house after slipping through a small hole. The story follows his adventures with the creatures who help him survive until he is rescued.

MADE IN ENGLAND

Belfast

Music & lyrics by Elton John & Bernie Taupin 1995

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Deep inside my soul fights a war

I can't explain, I can't cross over any more

All I see are dirty faces

Rain and wire, and common sense in pieces

But I try to see through Irish eyes

Belfast

Look outside, summer's lost and gone

It's a long walk on a street of right and wrong

In every inch of sadness

Rocks and tanks go hand in hand with madness

But I never saw a braver place

Belfast

And it's sad when they sing, and hollow ears listen

Of smoking black roses, on the streets of Belfast

And so say your lovers from under the flowers

Every foot of this world needs an inch of Belfast

Who's to say on whom heaven smiles

Our different ways we try hard to recognise

No more enchanted evenings

The pubs are closed and all the ghosts are leaving

But you'll never let them shut you down

Belfast

The enemy is not at home

A jealous green streaks down this faulty diamond

No bloody boots or crucifix

Can ever hope to split this emerald island

But I never saw a braver place

Belfast

The trip is only a kilometer so I didn’t have much time to draw.

Training myself to draw has been an interesting exercise. I studied the workds of Nicolas de Crecy, the Rat Rod artists, Stephan Marjoram, R.Crumb, S.Clay Wilson and many others. While I certainly will never develop the kind of talent they had, this has been a good way to "kill time" during the various periods of lockdown here in France during the Covid Pandemic.

Inktest Tree: Noodler's Habanero & Cayenne respectively from The Goulet Pen Company's July 2015 Inkdrop on Stillman & Birn, Zeta paper.

Thought I'd put both on one sheet of paper because they are literally in the same family and it's easier to see a comparison of the two side by each

An Ode to Anton the Aztec Goat

A goat called Anton rowed his boat

Every day around the castle in the moat

And in that boat he wore a coat

And its patterns were great, he was known to gloat

“In the Incas I obtained my patterned coat”

In his daily journal is what he wrote

The coat was payment made in full

For head-butting one rampaging bull

He butted the bull and it ran away

And he saved all the village folk on that day

But that was a long time in the past

And now he can’t even run that fast

His time is now spent as a goat in a boat

Paddling in a moat while wearing a coat

It might seem silly but it floats his boat

That Anton the Goat who’s known to gloat

The End

Location: Kitchen table at the farm

Note: My heritage is Finnish and my parents have a wood heated sauna. My father insisted I take the 'pups' in when I went to stew in the 80C heat...and sure enough the girls couldn't get to the top bench fast enough and play with water from the bucket....*face palm*

THE UNION

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mandalay Again

Music & lyrics by Elton John, Leon Russell & Bernie Taupin 2010

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rules and regulations

And real estate are things I've left behind

Flights are always leaving

Silver wings unfolding on a dime

But I won't forget to tell you

If I could reconnect the line

I never really knew you

But come back I'd like to find the time

Drugs and consequences

And ferris wheels just took us up and down

Fights were always brewing

Two perfect understudies for a clown

If I could piece it all together

Or maybe find you through a friend

Last I heard it was St. Louis

But I wish that it was Mandalay again

Come back I'd like to find the time

Plant a seed and raise a little Cain

Come back we'll throw a rope around the moon

And pretend that we're in Mandalay again

Fuel and information

Are Siamese twins who poison everything

Lies that left us drowning

Rumor that burned like gasoline

I could have read you like a book

But instead I acted dumb and blind

I was younger then and foolish

Come back I'd like to find the time

If it wasn't in the afterglow of wine

Or the chatter of some European girl

I'd have understood that after all these years

There were those who chose to separate our worlds

Separate our worlds
