Fat Old Sun
Music & lyrics by Pink Floyd, David Gilmour 1970
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When that fat old sun in the sky is falling
Summer evenin' birds are calling
Summer's Sunday and a year
The sound of music in my ears
Distant bells
New mown grass smells so sweet
By the river holding hands
Roll me up and lay me down
And if you see
Don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange
Sing to me
Sing to me
When that fat old sun in the sky is falling
Summer evenin' birds are calling
Children's laughter in my ears
The last sunlight disappears
And if you see
Don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange
Sing to me
Sing to me
When that fat old sun in the sky is...(fades out)

Note: Thought process was thus: Looking at pin-up girls from the 40's => stockings => soldiers/sailors giving gifts of rationed stockings to the ladies they fancied => sailors dream of mermaids => but mermaids have no use for stockings => but sailors fishing for gals might...right?

Note: just rolling with the idea of incorporating my rodent muses as part of my up coming art journal for my trip to Spain & Scotland. Pure nonsense for the sake of experimentation with the materials that will be traveling with me :)

Memories of my younger years... the early sixties.
The marbles represented the Tour de France cyclists. Yellow for Jacques Anquetil, red for Rik Van Looy.
The pencils have always remained...
Training myself to draw has been an interesting exercise. I studied the workds of Nicolas de Crecy, the Rat Rod artists, Stephan Marjoram, R.Crumb, S.Clay Wilson and many others. While I certainly will never develop the kind of talent they had, this has been a good way to "kill time" during the various periods of lockdown here in France during the Covid Pandemic.

Note: I leave in 10 days for holidays (Spain & Scotland) which has me thinking about how to approach my travel art journal. I am not interested in documenting architecture (which many people seem to enjoy doing) nor do I just want to create something akin to a scrapbook. I think my imaginary menagerie will continue to be my social commentators on this journey and the focus of my sketchbook....hence the squirrelified Picasso.
Thankfully I was able to score a pair if Zeta sketchbooks from an American online supplier before they were out of stock....which although unfortunate for those wanting to try the paper, speaks highly for the product. Now I have to make the executive decision on what art supplies to pack....decisions, decisions.

Note: ...it hit me like a bolt of lightning while looking at some scarlet & black fashions in a GQ editorial. Black + Red + Italian fashion + robins, which are black and red... all come together naturally into Robin Hipsters...right? :)
Or... maybe it's another one of those 'just me' things ...either way I rather liked the way this one turned out :3

"Oh Jessie I'd like to be
One of those men upon the screen
With an elegant lady and a cafe in Paris
Serving Pernot and Kalua with cream
You can see it I know
All the doors have been closed in my face
And the drinks at the Casbah
Run a mile or more from this place
And oh Jessie won't you look at the planes
Tell me, oh Jessie, is it true what they say
That there's a capital G in the name of the game
And the runway's a home for my silver-grey planes
And won't you look at the planes
Riding down the skyway
Jessie ain't those wings just fine
Don't it make you want to fly someday
Why friend am I so still
Tied to my job with time to kill
Do I still bear the traces of old Don Quixote
Tilting giants on imaginary hills...."

RIVER OF DREAMS
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Blonde Over Blue
Music & lyrics by Billy Joel 1993
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Some days, when I'm far away
In a lonely room in a cold seclusion
Some nights when I'm wound so tight
There is no release, there is no solution
In hell, there's a big hotel
Where the bar just closed and the windows never opened
No phone, so you can't call home,
And the TV works, but the clicker is broken
But, in the darkness, I see your light turned on
You know my weakness, you know how I respond to...
Blonde over blue
Your hands are cold, your eyes are fire
Blonde over blue
They shine as though you're burning inside
One word from you is all I need to be inspired
Blonde over blue
I need your inspiration tonight
These days, there's a million ways
To be pulled and torn, to be misdirected
These times, there are sins and crimes
On the morning shows for the disconnected
I look, and I write my book,
And I walk away with the wrong impressions
Don't care 'cause I've done my share,
And I need some time for my own obsessions
It doesn't matter, I've let that life go by
It's been forgotten 'cause all I wanted was you
Blonde over blue
Your hands are cold, your eyes are fire
Blonde over blue
They shine as though you're burning inside
One word from you is all I need to be inspired
Blonde over blue
I need your inspiration tonight
These days, not a damn soul prays,
And there is no faith 'cause there's nothing to believe in
These days, only good luck pays
If we don't get paid, then we try to get even
I look, and I write my book,
And I have my say, and I draw conclusions
Some nights when I'm wound so tight
There is no release, there is no solution
But, in the darkness, I see your light turned on
You know my weakness, you know how I respond to...

Ho! Ho! Ho! (Who'd Be A Turkey At Christmas)
Music & lyrics by Elton John & Bernie Taupin 1973
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sitting here on Christmas Eve with a brandy in my hand
Oh I've had a few too many and it's getting hard to stand
I keep hearing noises from my fireplace
I must be going crazy or the brandy's won the race
And I keep hearing ho ho ho, guess who's here
Your fat and jolly friend draws near
Ho ho ho, surprise, surprise
The bearded weirdy's just arrived
Ho ho ho, guess who's here
Your fat and jolly friend draws near
Ho ho ho, surprise surprise
The bearded wierdy's just arrived
On my roof there's snorting sounds, and bells inside my head
My vision's blurred with colour, and all he sees is red
There's a pair of large sized wellies coming down my flue
And the smell of burning rubber, oh is filling up the room
Another ink from Knight's Writing Co., the Canadian distributor of this Polish ink...so chuffed about it being available here.
ANYway...WHAT is this ink? Look at that...LOOK. AT. THAT!
A mysterious shade of darkish green (like soapstone) when using a dip pen, it definately is good with a flex nib...but whoa *points to tree* that is just SO cool. :D

THE UNION
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gone To Shiloh
Music & lyrics Leon Russell, Neil Young, Elton John & Bernie Taupin 2010
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Luther left us first light Friday morning
Little Dan and Becky waved goodbye
They're gonna have to share the weight together
Idle hands will see a good farm slowly die
Gone to Shiloh for the Union
Shoulder to shoulder, side by side
Gone to Shiloh, hope springs eternal
When flags and bullets start to fly
April's come and the air smells fresh with rain
They watched his shadow fade around the bend
He's headed for a different kind of thunder
And the stunned surprise in the eyes of dying men
Gone to Shiloh for the Union
Shoulder to shoulder, side by side
Gone to Shiloh, time passes slowly
When flags and bullets start to fly
The old black rooster sang him down that dirt road
His step seemed bold, his manner fancy-free
I pray we see him alive and well in the fall here
Than that God-forsaken place in Tennessee
After all of this
If we should prevail
Heaven help the South
When Sherman comes their way

Calling Elvis
Music & lyrics by Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler 1991
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Calling Elvis
Is anybody home
Calling Elvis
I'm here all alone
Did he leave the building
Or can he come to the phone
Calling Elvis
I'm here all alone
Well tell him I was calling just to wish him well
Let me leave my number
Heartbreak hotel
Oh love me tender
Baby don't be cruel
Return to sender
Treat me like a fool
Calling Elvis
Is anybody home
Calling Elvis
I'm here all alone
Did he leave the building
Can he come to the phone
Calling Elvis
I'm here all alone
Why don't you go get him
I'm his biggest fan
You gotta tell him
He's still the man
Long distance baby
So far from home
Don't you think maybe you could put him on
Well tell him I was calling just to wish him well
Let me leave my number
Heartbreak hotel
Oh love me tender
Baby don't be cruel
Return to sender
Treat me like a fool
Calling Elvis
Is anybody home
Calling Elvis
I'm here all alone
Did he leave the building
Or can he come to the phone
Calling Elvis
I'm here all alone

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Sakura Micron 02, OHTO graphic liner 10, Faber Catstell PITT artist Brush 199** in a *Moleskine Folio journal ( 21 cm 30 cm / 8 1/4" x 11 1/4")

Note: Trying out a selection of pens on new paper as I try to nip habits in the bud before they get entrenched.
~ I automatically run all these images through a photo filter after I've scanned them, as the project is meant to be just B/W images and not all my paper is consistent.
*Moleskine folio ~ this is a hardbound, heavy (160g) cream coloured paper. All Moleskine journals are now Made in China and I have to say that my experience today was A FIRST. I started drawing in pencil and then erased some lines to start again. I ERASED THE CREAM COLOUR off the page to reveal white underneath. WHAT THE F**K is THAT!?!
I can not in all honesty recommend this product to ANYone who actually cares about the paper quality they are drawing/writing on. To me this is just a sketchbook to play in, but I am seriously concerned about that this means for anyone who uses these books for serious work of any kind. Just ew! I will not repeat the mistake of purchasing this product again. The lesson here children is look to Europe or Japan for paper.
As for Lost Girl....OMG I am so happy the new season has been launched and I get to curl up on Sunday nights with my favourite, ass-kicking Fae and her human. I can't decide what I like the most about Kensi...her goth punk street fashion or the attitude with which she wears it. :D
