Gouache and ink on Steinbach paper.
"We're playing those mind games together
Pushing the barriers planting seeds
Playing the mind guerrilla
Chanting the Mantra peace on earth
We all been playing those mind games forever
Some kinda druid dudes lifting the veil
Doing the mind guerrilla
Some call it magic the search for the grail..."

But you're burning it up so fast, searching for some lasting truth..."

Sultans Of Swing
Music & lyrics by Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler 1978
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You get a shiver in the dark
It's a rainin' in the park, but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowin' Dixie double four time
You feel alright when you hear the music ring...
And now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Comin' in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Competition in other places...
Oh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on down south, way on down south London town
You check out Guitar George, he knows all the chords
But he's strictly rhythm he doesn't wanna make it cry or sing
They've said an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doin' alright
He can play the honky tonk like anything
Savin' it up, Friday night...
With the Sultans... with the Sultans of Swing
And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn 'bout any trumpet playing band
It ain't what they call rock and roll
And the Sultans... yeah the Sultans, they play Creole
Creole
Uh huh
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
'Goodnight, now it's time to go home'
And he makes it fast with one more thing
'We are the Sultans... We are the Sultans of Swing'

This is a drawing in a moleskine notebook I made of my wife Laurie while I was home on leave from Afghanistan in 2005.

After seeing the bamboo at the SD Zoo... I realized the real ones are very crowded indeed. *shrugs* I'm not sure i like this one, but... thought it would be good to show as progress

Note: ...it was just a fun thing to do :) Of course....the actual painting was done by Vermeer, a contemporary of Rembrandt, but I couldn't shake this particular idea/image loose from my head. Muses are tricky that way ;)

ink on some kind of fancy vellum paper- and yes, im talking about the easily smeared ink pens those old people used way back then. ;D

So today I was playing around with the inks from the June Sampler I received from www.gouletpens.com/
....aside from being highly impressed with this economical way to test ink colours, I am equally pleased with the selection.
My criteria is going to be different from those who use the inks for writing purposes....but then you already know that if you've been paying attention to my work.
Okay so this tree combines 3 of the 5 samples: Diamine Salamander, Private Reserve Ebony Brown and Platinum Free-mix Earth Brown with:
~ Noodler's Golden Brown + Rohrer & Klingner Alt-Goldgrun
They all work REALLY well together. They work so well that I think I need to go draw more trees....that was fun.
Training myself to draw has been an interesting exercise. I studied the workds of Nicolas de Crecy, the Rat Rod artists, Stephan Marjoram, R.Crumb, S.Clay Wilson and many others. While I certainly will never develop the kind of talent they had, this has been a good way to "kill time" during the various periods of lockdown here in France during the Covid Pandemic.

DID ANYBODY SLEEP WITH JOAN OF ARC
Music & lyrics by Elton John & Bernie Taupin 2002
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At seventeen, she became the queen of Orleans
A peasant child guided by a vivid dream
She was cool before they knew what cool became
She cut her hair and cross-dressed in a dangerous age
She set a trend, a natural look was all the rage
Imagine if they'd had merchandise and poster sales
This bride of God, bigger than Elvis in her day
She had it all until they burned it all away
She swung a sword
She rode a horse
She wore her armor for the Lord
But did she cry by candlelight
Was she lonely after dark
Did she pray for something more
Did anybody sleep with Joan Of Arc
She was small and more or less of common breed
But saint aside, no stranger to a woman's needs
No handsome knights, no random acts of chivalry
Her bed remained a simple place for her to sleep
They burned her down for her belief
They burned her down for her faith
They gave her up into the flames
Proclaiming she'd seen heaven's face
Did anybody sleep with Joan of Arc
Calligraphy ink drawing #2 ~ R&K Alt-Goldgrun, Diamine Sepia & Kallipos' Baroque Gold on StillmanandBirn Zeta paper
I am obsessing a bit with these two fountain pen inks.....just fascinated by the fact that they can't decide what colour to be when they start to dance together. :)
Materials: Iroshizuku (syo-ro) + Rohrer & Klingner (Alt-Goldgrun) with a dip pen on Stillman & Birn, paper

Fat Old Sun
Music & lyrics by Pink Floyd, David Gilmour 1970
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When that fat old sun in the sky is falling
Summer evenin' birds are calling
Summer's Sunday and a year
The sound of music in my ears
Distant bells
New mown grass smells so sweet
By the river holding hands
Roll me up and lay me down
And if you see
Don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange
Sing to me
Sing to me
When that fat old sun in the sky is falling
Summer evenin' birds are calling
Children's laughter in my ears
The last sunlight disappears
And if you see
Don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange
Sing to me
Sing to me
When that fat old sun in the sky is...(fades out)
