Venetian Gothic is a term given to a style of architecture combining use of the Gothic lancet arch with Byzantine and Arab influences. The style originates in 14th century Venice where the confluence of Byzantine style from Constantinople met Arab influence from Moorish Spain. Chief examples of the style are the Doge's Palace and the Ca' d'Oro in Venice.

The style was revived in the 19th century, largely through the influence of British architectural critic John Ruskin and his treatise The Stones of Venice. In North America the style was popularized by architects Charles Amos Cummings, Frank Furness, William Robert Ware, Willard T. Sears, and Frederick William Stevens.

Here are some wonderful rendering of a blended style of Seattle Seahawks Football team spirit and Native American Tribal motifs. Built by Jogja's Sultan Hamengkubowono I in the 1800s and designs influenced by various cultures, namely Hindu, Buddhist, Islam and European, Taman Sari got its nickname Water Castle because of the three large swimming pools that make up the compound. In its glory days, Taman Sari was a retreat for the sultan and his concubines; it is said that the sultan would watch the women swim and bathe in the swimming pools from another high point in the castle. He would then pick out the lucky woman (or women - kinky) who was to spend the night with him.

Along the side of the bathing pools, fountains with naga-heads would gush out water and fill these large water pools.

We learned that the castle had just gone through some major renovations and the pools were expected to contain cool Jogja water when the reconstruction was completed. The reconstruction of the castle involved putting in more solid foundations and new cement to the aging building to ensure that its lifespan is prolonged.

The Water Castle served another purpose as a fortress for Jogjakarta back in the olden days. When enemies try to attack Jogja city, the royalty would hide in the Water Castle to be kept safe from harm's way. If Jogja's enemies ever found the entrance to the hiding place, they would be drowned and washed out by strong currents of water released from underwater passageways and possibly even water from the swimming pools.

The old Mission to Seamen at the end of Flinders Street.

"One of the earliest examples of Spanish-influenced design in Melbourne, Walter Butler’s Missions to Seamen is an intriguing architectural experiment in Arts and Crafts style combined with a somewhat bizarre choice of form, particularly in the stupa-like form of the gymnasium. Built of brick and rendered in rough-cast concrete, the chapel tower and bell turret, courtyard and cloister evoke elements of the Spanish Missions architecture of California. The building houses many elements which are the result of charitable works and donations, such as the marble mosaic compass rose in the entrance hall and the chapel itself, funds for which were raised by the ladies of the Harbour Lights Guild to commemorate British and Australian seamen who lost their lives during World War I. The pulpit in the chapel is a reconstruction of the stern of a sailing ship. It even has a stern-castle and rudder. There are a variety of spaces within the building: a main hall with a vaulted ceiling of reinforced concrete, a lecture hall (now the Celia Little Lounge) and upstairs, a self-contained two-storey house for the chaplain and facilities for the officers who were not expected to mix with the seamen.

There was a dance hall, which was turned into a dormitory during World War II, then later converted to a cinema. The domed gymnasium, intended to alleviate the effects of crowded living conditions on ships, was named the Norla Gymnasium (1920) in honour of Sir Simon and Lady Fraser, generous supporters of the missions. Today, only the staples in the domed roof remain as reminders of the ladders, climbing ropes and trapezes that once hung in this unusual space."

The main influence on the style of the Lincoln Memorial was the Temple of Zeus at Olympia, Greece. The focus of the memorial is Daniel Chester French's sculpture of Lincoln, seated. French studied many of Mathew Brady's photographs of Lincoln and depicted the President as worn and pensive, gazing eastwards down the Reflecting Pool toward the capital's starkest emblem of the Union, the Washington Monument. Beneath his hands, the Roman fasces, symbols of the authority of the Republic, are sculpted in relief on the seat. The statue stands 19 feet 9 inches (6 m) tall and 19 feet (6 m) wide, and was carved from 28 blocks of white Georgia marble.

The central cella is flanked by two others. In one, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address is inscribed on the south wall, and in the other, Lincoln's second inaugural address is inscribed on the north wall. Above the texts are a series of murals by Jules Guerin that depict an angel (representing truth), the freeing of a slave (on the south wall, above the Gettysburg Address) and the unity of the American North and South (above the Second Inaugural Address). There is also a large book shop to the right of the entrance. On the wall behind the statue, visible over the statue's head, is this dedication:

IN THIS TEMPLE

AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE

FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION

THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN

Disrupting Political Campaigns: Shifting Influence from the Money to the Many

8:00 pm - 9:00 pm MDT on Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Modern campaigns have become fund-raising arms races, distorting whom our elected officials feel accountable to and compromising a fundamental tenet of democracy — electoral representation. Comprehensive legislative or judicial solutions to this problem are difficult to imagine in today’s environment. But in this age of disruption, is it conceivable that innovations could emerge in campaign practice that help candidates win while increasing their reliance on everyday constituents as opposed to well-heeled donors? As a new generation of Americans comes of age and the Internet becomes the dominant political medium, can people power compete with financial power? With campaigns becoming more sophisticated in how they use new technologies, there are reasons to be hopeful and reasons to be fearful. (Ticketed Event)
