xuanjitu, 2020 (work in progress). Web app (Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, HTML5, and Canvas). Courtesy of the artist.

Project statement from Rory Ou:

xuanjitu is an online, web-based implementation of Xuanji tu(璇玑图), an ancient palindrome poem by Chinese poet Su Hui. "One of the earliest extant poems by a woman—also among the most complex and unsung—the Xuanji tu takes the form of a 29 x 29 character grid, embroidered or woven in five colors in silk, written in classical Chinese in the fourth century." (—Jen Bervin)

As the poem can be read horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, in either direction, there are thousands and thousands of ways through the grid that can form rhyming poems of various line lengths. Plenty of scholars have published books and papers about how to read it, over the thousand+ years since it was created, but mostly in the form of text and printed diagrams to show the paths through the grid.

This app animates those readings proposed by scholars, and (eventually, I hope) will allow visitors to discover new readings of their own.

Demo mode:

The app is still a work in progress. So far, it only has a non-interactive demo mode, where it runs in a continuous loop, about an hour long. The loop consists of over 500 readings (distinct poems) proposed by Michèle Métail in her book Wild Geese Returning: Chinese Reversible Poems (translated by Jody Gladding). For all colors other than red, the loop includes every reading listed in Métail's book (with minor exceptions); for red--which has such a disproportionately large number of possible readings that Métail doesn't list them in the book--the loop contains a sampling of readings that would be valid according to Métail's system.

Pinyin is provided in the sidebar.

Egypt - Implementing landscape conservation approaches in critical oases_4590

18 June 2018 Kraków’s history spans a millennium: it was the seat of Polish kings and the capital of the country, developing into one of the key European metropolitan centres. The Old Town is an exceptional treasury of works of art, with traces of history and heritage representing nearly all architectural styles from the early Middle Ages to contemporary times.

For centuries, the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) has been the heart of the city: the largest market square of mediaeval Europe, it has preserved its original shape since 1257, and it was entered on the original UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978. For 600 years, a bugle call has been played from the taller tower of St Mary’s Church, standing by the square, to the four corners of the world. Situated in its centre, the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), a mediaeval shopping arcade, is one of the most recognisable examples of Polish architecture.

Kraków boasts one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Central Europe, second only to the University of Prague: the Jagiellonian University, whose students have included Mikołaj Kopernik (Nicolas Copernicus) and Pope John Paul II. Wawel Hill, inhabited since Palaeolithic times, has been an important religious centre and home to Polish monarchs since the mid-11th century. Today, with its no fewer than 71 exhibition halls, Wawel Royal Castle functions as a museum, drawing visitors with precious works of Renaissance art, among other attractions. Its arcaded courtyard, a pearl of 16th-century architecture, inspires awe and amazement.

Besides the city centre, the Kazimierz district likewise intrigues owing to many centuries of coexistence of two cultures: Christian and Jewish. Brimming with gems of Judaica of international significance, it is a place teeming with life: home to flea and art markets, and atmospheric taverns, pubs, restaurants, and cafés with live music. The Father Laetus Bernatek Footbridge connects Kazimierz to Podgórze – a district forgotten for years that has become fashionable, yet remaining peaceful and atmospheric. Nowa Huta, the most attractive and comprehensive implementation of the dreams of socialist realist architects, still surprises with the striking symmetry of its monumental structures.

Kraków is also a city with a dynamic cultural life. In 2000 it was a European City of Culture. Every year, nearly 100 festivals and other events, many of world magnitude, are held here; notably Misteria Paschalia, Sacrum Profanum, the Jewish Culture Festival, and the Kraków Film Music Festival (FMF). It is also a city of modern museums, where visitors are invited to discover history in an interactive manner.

It goes without saying that Kraków enchants with its unique atmosphere: lazy and relaxed at times, brimming with events at others, yet always exceptional and inspiring.

The Implementation of America's First Self-Service Fare System for Buses

Kavalcare Solar System for Jhpiego Mid-Wife Clinic Dec8, 2014

Every year, 12,000 women in Pakistan die of birth complications. The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Services Component, implemented by MCHIP/Jhpiego, aims at preventing maternal, newborn, and child deaths by ensuring skilled birth attendance (SBA) through a total market approach, empowered community, timely referral of obstetric and neonatal complications to an emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) facility, and improved access to child care.

Lack of electricity in remote areas is a major issue that often leads to obstetric complications and newborn deaths. Refrigerated storage is vital for the effectiveness of life saving drugs and vaccines. Ice boxes are used in remot areas of this purpose but it is an ineffective method especially when easy availability of ice is a problem. To overcome these issues, Lodhie Foundation in association with Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program/JHPIEGO, extended its Kavalcare program and provided a Solar Powered System to a remote clinic located at village Haji Usman Jhakro near Makli, District Thatta. System provides sufficient power to operate a small refrigerator, a fan and 3 lamps 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It was designed, manufactured and installed by Shaan Technologies private Limited Karachi. After installation of Solar System in August 2014, this small remote clinic is serving a community of 10,000 plus persons who lives in village Haji Usman and surrounding areas. On an average 10 patients visits this clinic each day. Clinic also provides up to 15 birth attendance and new born care in a month.

It kicked-off with a rally in front of the Chancellery, then it continued with a stop at the front of the Reichstag and then finally the Brandenburg Gate. The event was organised by the Berlin Disabled Persons Federation, the National Association of Social Association Berlin-Brandenburg Germany and the Federal Initiative "at home rather than a home."

Este santuário está

implementado numa vasta

área consagrada ao culto

Mariano e constitui um pólo

de dinamização de

numerosas actividades de

espiritualidade, recolhimento

e apoio social. Na sua

génese, está a resposta das

populações do nordeste

transmontano à mensagem

de Fátima, através de uma

acção liderada por um

sacerdote natural da região: o

P. Manuel Joaquim Ochôa.

Começou a ser edificado em

ampliada a torre sineira.

segurança do reino.

Pires.

How my piping bag looked after I'd squeezed out the leftover almond paste dough to make my cookie.

This stuff was almost impossible to pipe. In fact, after I'd piped the first strip of lattice, nearly breaking my arm to do so, I scraped all the dough into a food processor and mixed in about a tablespoon of egg white and two teaspoons of walnut oil. That still didn't loosen it enough, so I put half of it in a bowl and ran it into the oven for a minute or so, to melt it at bit, and then mixed it back into the rest. After I did that, the stuff was possible to pipe, but still extremely difficult. I could only do it by twisting the top of the pastry bag like a crank while squeezing the middle with my other hand. I was very concerned that the bag would burst, but they don't call it a Wünderbag for nothing.

This was the hardest workout I've had in months—I definitely exerted my arm muscles to the point of failure a couple of times. I'll be sore for days.

For practical wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) implementations, Artificial Intelligence studies specific problem solving or reasoning tasks. Healthcare mobility solutions boost capabilities such as visual perception, speech recognition, and decision-making.

But wearables and the Internet of Things (IoT) work without an AI engine, why do we need it in the first place. Because the true value lies in insights.
