LION MD. GANI MIAH BABUL, A SELFLESS SUCCESSFUL FIGURE

Lion Md Gani Miah Babul is a well known and enlightened name to the media, media worker, education sector and the common people of Bangladesh. He has special contribution and recognition in the different aspects of society. Though a teacher he is recognized to all as a successful organizer, writer and columnist. He was engaged in writing from his student life and was active in politics being inspired by Bangabandhu to implement the cause of our liberation. During his engagement in politics he actively advocated for the welfare and fundamental rights of the students rather than being a sycophant of the political party. He was the VP of the Student parliament of Agriculture Training Institute, Sherpur and the Chairman of Bangladesh Agriculture Diploma Endeavor Council. He was also the Central Chairman of Bangladesh Diploma Agriculturist Association. He was a meritorious student. Lion Md Gani Miah Babul has obtained BA, BAGEd, Dip-in-Agri degrees. Besides his research on agriculture, he conducted extensive research on religion. He earned name and fame by his writing on contemporary affairs, social problem, public awareness and feature as well as by his spiritual writing and research. Personally, Lion Gani Miah Babul is actively involved in social, cultural, sports and religious organization. From his passion for writing from student life he worked for different national and regional papers remarkably of which Daily Khabar, Daily Ganamukh, Daily Muktasangbad, Dainik Janasangbad where Lion Gani Miah Babul worked as a journalist. At present Lion Md Gani Miah Babul has continued his work from the first class dailies to the weekly magazines irrespectively.

Lion Md Gani Miah is working as a silent social worker in love with the people and the land. He is always a smiling face in standing by the poor community. He helps the father burdened with an unmarried daughter and provides the poor students with educational materials. He has already established school, madrasah, masjid, Islamic library and other quality institutions in his area to disseminate the light of knowledge. He has written many educative books. Repatration & Symbolic burial of MK members by Department of Military Veterans

As part of the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) recommendations, the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Adv. Michael Masutha, officiated the symbolic burial of three late members of Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK), Selby Mavuso, Sizwe Kondile and Johannes Sambo, at Freedom Park, Pretoria on Friday, 01 July 2016.

The symbolic reburial at Freedom Park was preceded by a ceremonial repatriation of the late MK members’ spirits. The ceremonial repatriation was led by their families and facilitated by the Department from the spot where the three MK members were killed on Thursday, 30 June 2016 at Lebombo Border Post, Komatipoort.

Selby Mavuso, Sizwe Kondile and Johannes Sambo were killed by members of the apartheid era Vlakplaas Unit during the late eighties. The Missing Persons Task Team has confirmed that their remains are not recoverable due to the manner in which they were disposed of after being killed.

Model UN Summer School organized in Ismayilli by UNDP Azerbaijan

Second Model UN (MUN) Summer School was held in Ismayilli Azerbaijan. This MUN Summer School was organized in the framework of joint project implemented by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Azerbaijan.

The main format of the Summer School was based on the simulation of the United Nations’ Committees. Nearly 200 participants from various universities, academies and schools have been involved in the simulation of the work of three United Nations Committees .

The participants discussed the issues on “Alternative Sources of Energy”, Restoration of peace and security in Boko Haram affected areas” and “Philippines vs. China: South China Sea Arbitration” at the UN General Assembly (UN GA), UN Security Council (UN SC) and International Court of Justice (ICJ), respectively.

The Summer School applicants were obliged to proceed through a numerous process of screenings and interviews. Selected outstanding participants of the Model UN will be awarded for the nominations of "The Best Delegate", "The Best Position Document" and "The Best Debater". The certificates and prizes were handed to the winners of nominees by the organizers at the end of the Summer School.

The main purpose of our joint project on “Creating new platforms to support active youth engagement in global policy debates” is to support the capacity building of young people and youth-led institutions, and the advancement of youth participation in governance. Additionally, this project also contributed to the process of institutionalization of the UN Model activity in Azerbaijan, establishment of MUN clubs at the educational institutions, and building MUN network.

Penthouse Design and Implementation - Happy Valley – May 2011 by Space Projects Ltd

The Brief; -

Happy Valley is a generously proportioned 1930’s residence sitting within beautifully landscaped 4 acres of grounds. Our brief was to design a penthouse over the existing building to maximise the views over the grounds and provide a gallery space for pieces of contemporary art and furniture.

The Design; -

Our solution was to design a light-weight steel framed structure with an over-sailing eaves detail to provide solar shading to the extensively glazed garden facing elevation. The glazed section affords uninterrupted views across the landscaped grounds and into the countryside beyond. The glazing itself is highly engineered to reduce heat loss, solar gain and is also self cleaning to reduce maintenance. The existing stair has been extended with glass and stainless steel, above which a glass-vaulted roof transmits light into the core of the building via the stairwell.

Proportions of the penthouse have been carefully designed in order that it does not dominate the existing architecture. The horizontal proportions of the penthouse have been accentuated to harmonize with the horizontal banding of the main building whilst preserving the integrity of the existing architecture by allowing it to be easily defined.

The penthouse encloses 76M2 of internal space with two external sun terraces to enjoy during summer.

Internally, the gallery space is equipped with discreet adjustable lighting, a recessed track for hanging panels and a recessed picture rail on the wall for hanging artwork.

Works are due to commence on site in March 2011 and due to complete in June 2011

Every year, 12,000 women in Pakistan die of birth complications. The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Services Component, implemented by MCHIP/Jhpiego, aims at preventing maternal, newborn, and child deaths by ensuring skilled birth attendance (SBA) through a total market approach, empowered community, timely referral of obstetric and neonatal complications to an emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) facility, and improved access to child care.

Lack of electricity in remote areas is a major issue that often leads to obstetric complications and newborn deaths. Refrigerated storage is vital for the effectiveness of life saving drugs and vaccines. Ice boxes are used in remot areas of this purpose but it is an ineffective method especially when easy availability of ice is a problem. To overcome these issues, Lodhie Foundation in association with Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program/JHPIEGO, extended its Kavalcare program and provided a Solar Powered System to a remote clinic located at village Haji Usman Jhakro near Makli, District Thatta. System provides sufficient power to operate a small refrigerator, a fan and 3 lamps 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It was designed, manufactured and installed by Shaan Technologies private Limited Karachi. After installation of Solar System in August 2014, this small remote clinic is serving a community of 10,000 plus persons who lives in village Haji Usman and surrounding areas. On an average 10 patients visits this clinic each day. Clinic also provides up to 15 birth attendance and new born care in a month.

Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO collaborate to launch Mobile Learning for Teacher’s in Pakistan using Nokia Education Delivery App to facilitate teacher training via mobile phones

Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO Islamabad launched the project “Mobile Learning Project for Teacher’s Professional Development” today as formal collaboration in the presence of senior government officials, Nokia representatives and UNESCO representatives. As part of this program, UNESCO and Nokia are joining hands, where Nokia is providing its mobile phones and its application “Nokia Education Delivery (NED) for UNESCO’s project on ‘use of ICT for professional development of public school teachers’ in remote areas.

Since 2011 NED has turned into an open source solution to improve livelihoods, and in order to support such mobile learning innovations to be filled with life in Pakistan, The project will be implemented by AGAHI, a UNESCO partner and a non-profit foundation working in the area of communication and media policy design.

Nokia developed NED to allow using a mobile phone to access and download videos and other educational materials from a constantly updated education library. Operating in hundreds of schools and having reached millions of students in the Philippines, Tanzania, Chile and Colombia, Nokia Education Delivery has been shown to improve study results and increase retention among students.

This collaboration is part of the agreement signed last year between UNESCO and Nokia at international level to promote the use of mobile technologies to further the objectives of “Education for All”. As part of this agreement Nokia is developing applications and new Mobile technologies offering access to information and enrich learning environments at global level.

In Pakistan, through the project “Mobile Learning for Teachers” Nokia’s Education Delivery application will help UNESCO to enable the delivery of high- quality educational materials to teachers who lack training and resources though mobile phones giving an opportunity to teachers to train themselves on the same level as professionally competent teachers.

Speaking about the project, UNESCO Director, Kozue Kai Nagata said, “In 21st century Public- private partnerships are enjoying growing attention and support as a new and sustainable modality for development. We are confident to collaborate with Nokia to provide us with the best platform to train public school teachers. Nokia Education Delivery is fit to match our need of delivering quality training to a large number of public school teachers across Pakistan through the project named “Mobile Learning for Teachers”

Amir Jahangir, President AGAHI and a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, shared his views on the launch that “Pakistan is a knowledge starved country, where universal education has its own challenges. To meet the target of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) on education, Pakistan needs to address its education challenges through innovation and technology which can reach to a larger population with cost effective solutions”.

Speaking about the launch of NED program, Ulrike Vott Nokia Sustainability Manager for Middle East said, “Nokia Education Delivery facilitates education in a fun and interactive way. In addition to the NED software, Nokia offers program implementation support for the benefit of Pakistan’s education landscape.” The Nokia Education Delivery software system has two modules. The first module is installed on a Nokia mobile phone and contains a browse able catalog of educational videos. The second module is installed on the computer of the education administrator. It manages the organization’s mobile video library, so that videos can be added, deleted and updated. It also provides information on the usage of different videos.”

This unique pilot project for Pakistan has been initiated by UNESCO and AGAHI aims at using Mobile phones as medium for training teachers, where the teachers in remote areas will be equipped with devices, SIMs, a software solution and high quality educational content. The course for training and capacity building will be developed into video files and will be transmitted step by step according to curriculum on the phones provided to teachers. Over the course of the training period, teachers will be tested via SMS on regular basis and as an incentive, those who will score highest in tests will receive free mobile top ups. At the end of the course, test scores of all teachers will be aggregated and the passing teachers will be awarded certificate in the final workshop.

AGAHI is UNESCO implementing partner in Pakistan. A not for profit, AGAHI specializes in creating communication, information and media policy design tools, that enables the stakeholders to engage in information collaboration on knowledge-based platforms. AGAHI works in building the capacity of knowledge workers in creating content based on best practices to disseminate information in building a more integrated knowledge ecosystem.

Navigating Choppy Waters: China's Economic Decision-Making at a Time of Transition by CSIS | Center for Strategic & International Studies

After 35 years of spectacular growth, the Chinese economy is in the midst of a challenging transition toward a “new normal.” Even as President Xi Jinping has put forward an ambitious and far-reaching economic reform agenda, implementation is struggling against the backdrop of slowing growth and a more pluralized political economy. Whether or not Beijing succeeds or fails in its efforts, China’s economic trajectory in coming years will have a substantial impact on the prospects for U.S. and global growth, as well as on broader American interests in the Asia-Pacific region and the world. The Simon Chair has recently completed a two-year study of China’s economic decision-making designed to shed light on this important topic and help inform U.S. economic strategy towards a rapidly changing China. We hope you will join us for the rollout of the results of this study and a stimulating discussion of China’s political economy.

MinAgricultura, ICA y Augura entregaron kits de bioseguridad a más de 450 productores de banano de Magdalena by Ministerio de Agricultura

Esta acción se enmarca en el Plan de contención y erradicación del Fusarium que viene adelantando el Gobierno para evitar que la enfermedad ingrese a otras regiones del país

Santa Marta (Magdalena) diciembre 24 de 2019. (@MinAgricultura-@AndrsValencia9). Como parte de las medidas de bioseguridad implementadas por el Ministerio de Agricultura y Desarrollo Rural, el Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA) y la Asociación de Bananeros de Colombia (Augura), para evitar la propagación del hongo Fusarium Raza 4 Tropical, en las fincas productoras de banano del Magdalena, se realizó la entrega de kits de bioseguridad a 452 pequeños productores de la región.

En el evento, que se llevó a cabo en el corregimiento Orihueca del municipio Zona Bananera (Magdalena) y en el que participaron el ministro de Agricultura, Andrés Valencia Pinzón; la gerente de ICA, Deyanira Barrera León; y el gerente (E) de Augura, Emerson Aguirre Medina, se reiteró el compromiso de trabajar articuladamente para enfrentar este riesgo sanitario, también para impulsar este importante sector del agro colombiano.

"El Gobierno ha estado del lado de los productores de banano desde el primer momento que el Fusarium R4T apareció en unos predios del departamento de La Guajira y con articulación institucional y trabajo conjunto con los productores, hemos logrado avanzar con éxito en la contención de la enfermedad. Con esta entrega que realizamos estamos garantizando sanidad en las plantaciones de banano y mejoras en los procesos que desarrollan los productores. Además, hemos trabajado con todos los actores para lograr convenios para capacitación de productores y trabajadores de predios, así como para fortalecer la bioseguridad en los predios", indicó Valencia Pinzón.

Así mismo, el ministro resaltó que esta acción se enmarca en el Plan de contención y erradicación del Fusarium que viene adelantando el Gobierno para evitar que la enfermedad ingrese a otras regiones del país y los productores son los principales promotores e implementadores de la bioseguridad en cada uno de los predios.

También el jefe de la cartera agropecuaria manifestó que "Buscamos con el apoyo del legislativo, declarar de interés nacional amenazas biológicas como Pudrición de cogollo, HLB en cítricos y fusarium, para asegurarle a los productores más herramientas y suficientes para el control y la erradicación de las mismas".

Por su parte la gerente del Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA), Deyanira Barrera León, expresó que "la bioseguridad es clave para mantener las plantaciones de plátano y banano libres de Fusarium R4T. Con el sector privado trabajamos en una serie de medidas para minimizar el riesgo bajo el concepto de: entre limpio y salga limpio".

"Estos kits de bioseguridad incluyen por productor: pediluvios, bombas de espalda e hidrolavadoras. La inversión es de alrededor de 1.000 millones de pesos en total. Los implementos entregados son necesarios para la desinfección de calzado, vehículos, motos y bicicletas para prevenir la propagación del hongo Fusarium Raza 4 Tropical", afirmó el presidente (E) de Augura, Emerson Aguirre Medina.

"La entrega se realizó a los productores asociados por medio de dos cooperativas: Emprebancop y Coopmulbanano y representa una oportunidad para concientizar y sensibilizar acerca de la bioseguridad para evitar la llegada y propagación del hongo", aseguró el presidente de Augura. La entrega del material se realizó en el marco del convenio 070 - 2019 entre la Asociación de Bananeros de Colombia (Augura) y el Instituto Agropecuario Colombiano (ICA).

Contexto del sector

Los departamentos de Antioquia, Magdalena y La Guajira para el año 2018 registraron una producción del 85 % del total del país (1.769.646 Ton). Al interior del país los principales productores de banano son Valle del Cauca con 85.000 Ton, Quindío con 46.207 t. y Santander con 41.675 Ton.

En materia de exportación cerca del 91% de la producción nacional de banano es destinado para la producción. En 2018 se exportaron 1,5 millones de toneladas con respecto al 2019 el sector exportó 1,7 millones de toneladas lo que evidencia 7,5% de crecimiento.

Finalmente, el ministro Valencia reiteró la voluntad y la determinación del Gobierno para trabajar juntamente con el sector bananero, el cual genera cerca de 35 mil empleos directos y 130 mil indirectos.
