CPI(M)s West Bengal State Secretary Pits Merit Against Quota .

· 27% quota for OBCs cannot be implemented in West Bengal. .
· Quotas cant exist at the cost of merit and excellence. So, there should be an .
increase in the number of seats along with introduction of OBC quotas. .
· I have come to know that students have an apprehension that there will be a .
reduced chance of meritorious students getting admitted to medical and .
engineering courses because of introduction of quotas. .
Comrade Bose, are students availing of quotas not meritorious or excellent? Are quotas a charity for the non-meritorious? Why doesnt CPI(M) call upon Bengals youth to accept that quota-students are equally meritorious as so-called general students? Why doesnt CPI(M) declare that Quotas democratise merit and excellence, which are not a monopoly of the upper castes? Instead, WHY is CPI(M) saying that Quotas cant exist at the cost of merit and excellence, thus echoing the anti-reservationists notion that quotas endanger merit and excellence? Would SFI, CPI(M condemn Comrade Biman Boses Brahminical bid to pit merit and .
excellence against quotas? Would they care to explain WHY the CPI(M) is refusing to implement 27% reservation for OBCs in Bengal? .
Can the SFI answer certain simple queries? .
· Why did the CPI(M), in its entire 30-year rule in West Bengal, never introduce OBC reservations for OBCs in higher education? .
· Will SFI care to tell us what is the %age of OBC reservation in Government jobs provided by the CPI(M)s State Govt in Bengal? Has the WB Govt implemented the Mandal recommendation of 27% reservation for OBCs? .
· · Why did successive JNUSUs led by SFI in the entire decade of 1983-92, fail to win back the policy of deprivation points, while an AISA-led JNUSU could do so in its very first tenure in 1993? .
· In spite of enjoying continuous tenure over successive JNUSU terms, why did the SFI-led JNUSU fail to complete the UGBM on Admission Policy in 1999, thus washing its hands off the responsibility to ensure review of the policy and 27% reservation for OBCs? .
· It is a matter of historical record that in 1990, SFI betrayed the pro-Mandal JNUSU led by Amit Sengupta, by abstaining on the pro-Mandal resolution in a UGBM, thus allowing the resolution to be defeated and forcing the pro-Mandal JNUSU to resign. .
AISAs Record of Fighting for Social Justice .
The SFI has repeated a whole set of tired old slanders against AISA, accusing AISA of being anti-Mandal. .
· We challenge SFI to produce a single AISA leaflet with the slogan No Mandal, No Kamandal (we are sure SFI has elaborate archives)! We challenge the SFI to name a single member who left AISA in 1999 because AISA failed to support 27% reservations and produce evidence that AISA did not support 27% reservations. Rather in 1999, it was AISA who proposed 27% reservation to be combined with economic, regional and gender deprivation point, finally forcing the SFI-led JNUSU to change its initial stance that Mandal recommendations and deprivation points cannot be implemented simultaneously. .
· AISA Was Born in Head-on Collision with Casteist and Communal Forces! We would like to remind them that Yes, AISA was born on North Indian campuses challenging the anti-Mandal and Mandir frenzy! AISAs founding National Conference in Allahabad University on 9 August 1990, just a day after the Govt.s Mandal Commission announcement, was gheraoed and attacked by anti-Mandal vandals. We are sure SFI accepts that casteist anti-Mandal forces were the same as the communal pro-Mandir Hindutva forces? AISA in Allahabad Univ. mobilised hundreds of students to challenge those very forces, facing brutal violence and police-RAF crackdown, when Ashok Singhal came to hoist a flag after Babri Masjid demolitions. AISAs victory in SU elections in BHU, Allahabad Univ, Kumaon Univ. and JNU in the 90s was on the strength of its robust challenge against casteist and .
