Being out on the water with a family of Common Loons is petty special. It's especially wonderful to watch the young riding on the parents' backs. This one was doing that along with his sibling (not pictured). My friend Roy and I went for a long drive and were kind of thrilled it was pouring rain because we wanted nice photos of the loons in the sun but it actually turned out to be a magical experience and the rain added a moody effect. We found a Loon on a nest which was amazing to see and had an adult Northern Goshawk fly right over us. It was worth spending hours in an exposed boat in the rain and peaceful to sit their listening to the haunting cries of these very attentive parents who fed their young constantly. It's amazing that these birds that help to indicate water quality can eat 1/2 ton of fish in 15 weeks. They have solid bones that help them dive
This trip was a memory I won't soon forget.
A few cool facts about this indicator species. The oldest Common Loon ever recorded was just 2 months shy of 30 years old.
We know Loons need clear water quality to find fish but they also have solid bones unlike most birds. They can quickly blow air out of their lungs and flatten their feathers to expel air within their plumage, so they can dive quickly and swim fast underwater like an otter. Encore en septembre il apporte nourriture à son petit même si ce dernier est assez autonome. On ne peut que constater un esprit parental très fort chez cette espèce.

… von Rottweil bis Stuttgart, und damit der traditionellen Altstrecke folgend, war dieser RE aus Singen (Hohentwiel) unterwegs. Wegen Bauarbeiten war die Gäubahn nördlich von Horb gesperrt. Und man scheute keine Mühen, die Direktverbindung trotzdem zu ermöglichen. Mit Dieselvorspann zwischen Tübingen und Horb, und wegen der Tunnels mit n-Wagen anstatt der planmäßigen Doppelstocker. Zwei 218 (die 456 und die 495) waren eigens von Ulm dafür abkommandiert. Ein wenig Hoffen und Bangen war noch angesagt, ob er wohl in Rottenburg über das passende Gleis 2 fahren würde. Er tat es ;-)

Einer der wohl bekanntesten Züge auf deutschen Schienen ist der Henkelzug.
Die Bayernbahn traktioniert diesen Zug, mit dem die beiden Henkel-Werke Langenfeld(Rhld) und Wassertrüdingen umweltfreundlich verbunden werden.
Ungefähr die Hälfte der Strecke hat 151 016 mit dem Zug bereits geschafft, als bei Babenhausen die Auslöser für DGS 59946 von Gunzenhausen nach Langenfeld klickten.
Immer wieder sonntags... Am 9. August 2020 war 110 262 (vormals 139 262) am "Henkelzug" (DGS 59970 von Wassertrüdingen nach Langenfeld) eingeteilt.
Sunday is Henkel-time... On 9th August 2020 BayernBahn's 110 262 (former 139 262) was hauling DGS 59970 from Wassertrüdingen to Langenfeld.
Vanuit Heukelom werd koers gezet naar Hulten. Er zou immers enige tijd niks komen, dus was het een mooie gelegenheid om te verkassen.
In Hulten passeerde de onlangs van logo's voorziene 193 742 met trein 45752 uit Duisburg Ruhort Hafen naar de Maasvlakte.
Noch immer sind die kleinen brauen Loks in der Schweiz fleißig bei der BLS im Einsatz. So sind sie auch noch täglich am Autoverlad über den Lötschberg an den Zügen anzutreffen.
Die 420 195 wird in Kürze an einem sonnigen Morgen den Bahnhof Kandersteg erreichen, nachdem Sie die PKW Fahrer sicher über den Lötschberg gebracht hatte.
The small brown locomotives in Switzerland are still busy at BLS. You can still find them on the trains every day at the car transport across the Lötschberg.
The 420 195 will shortly reach the Kandersteg train station on a sunny morning after you have safely brought the car drivers over the Lötschberg.
Es war ein lausiger Tag an dem dieses Bild entstand. Es hatte die ganze Zeit geregnet und nur für etwa 1,5h gab es eine kleine Regenpause. Die beiden Eisvögel flogen pfeilschnell um die Wette und hatten viel Spaß, auch wenn Sie nicht immer einer Meinung waren... ;-)
It was a lousy day when this picture was taken. It had been raining the whole time and there was only a short rain break for about 1.5 hours. The two kingfishers flew as fast as an arrow and had a lot of fun, even if they didn't always agree... ;-)

What a striking bird was this Common Loon! I was able to get this image (which is cropped from the original) using an 800 mm lens while floating unobtrusively on a small lake near Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Januar 2023 war die 111 029 der Railadventure mit vier Optima-Express Wagen der GfF als DZ 5626 mit dem Zug aus Przemyśl van Frankfurt (Oder) nach Hannover Messe-Laatzen unterwegs. Das Foto entstand kurz vor Werder...
Door de oorlog in de Oekraïne is het helaas nog steeds nodig dat mensen naar andere landen moeten vluchten. Zo reed op 19 januari 2023 de Railadventure 111 029 met een trein uit het Poolse Przemyśl (liggend aan de Oekrainse grens) als DZ 5626 van Frankfurt (Oder) naar Hannover Messe/Laatzen (hier kort voor Werder (Havel)).
The ongoing war in the Ukraine is unfortunately still leading to people having to flee their country for safer countries. On January 19th 2023, I spotted Railadventure engine 111 029 with a train from the Polish/Ukranian border town Przemyśl headed to Hannover Messe/Laatzen as DZ 5626 (seen here minutes after passing through Potsdam).
Diese Lachmöwe hatte sichtlich Spaß an diesem tollen Morgen. Eigentlich war sie nur auf Futtersuche, aber dazu sprang sie immer wieder aus dem Wasser in das Wasser.. Ich glaube ja sie hatte mächtig Spaß an dem Morgen! zum Glück in top Foto Entfernung mit super Licht dazu..
This Laridae had some great fun that morning. It was beautiful outside and it jumped out of the water and right back into it.. Actuallly it was looking for some food, but I think it had a blast!

Sie stehen auf dem höchsten Punkt des Ruhrgebiets, einer Halde bei Bottrop - die "Totems" von Agustín Ibarolla. 2002 schuf der baskische Künstler die Installation aus mehr als 100 ausgedienten Eisenbahnschwellen, die er mit Säge und Farbe bearbeitete und dann senkrecht in den Boden einließ. Durch ihre bunte Bemalung bilden sie einen spektakulären Kontrast zum Grau der Halde.
They stand on the highest point of the Ruhr area, a dump near Bottrop - the "Totems" of Agustin Ibarolla. In 2002, the Basque artist created the installation from more than 100 worn-out railway sleepers, which he worked with saws and paint and then let into the ground vertically. Through their colourful painting, they form a spectacular contrast to the grey of the heap.

After the loon chick hatches, it rides around on the back of a parent in the lake. The other parent feeds it small minnows and this also keeps the chick safe from snapping turtles. Taken from my canoe on Lake of Two Rivers.

12-15-15 Snook Island Sanctuary near Lake Worth Florida ... Pam, Gail S. and I were talking about how we hadn't seen the Loon this morning and low and behold he popped up right near the end of the boardwalk!

During its crayfish fishing the common loon approached the dike of Lake Michelbach for a short time. A great opportunity to capture the details of this beautiful northern visitor.
