This fascinating museum staircase, you can see in the "Kunstmuseum Bonn" (architect: Axel Schultes)
Took a canoe trip with a friend in search of a loon family. Found the family much sooner than we anticipated (just after our launch) and had to move on to avoid stressing them. Came back in later (to return to our launch point), and were able to see the chick as we passed by. Still managed some great shots.
Die letzten Tage konnte ich dieses Farbspektakel immer nur auf dem Weg von oder zur Arbeit bewundern. Heute bin ich dann noch einmal früh in die Wahner Heide gefahren...

such a cute sight when the little tern came and brought food. Always when it passed on a successless flight they exchanged cries to comfort each other.
Was für eine schöne und süße Beobachtung, als die Zwergseeschwalbe sein Küken fütterte. Immer, wenn sie erfolglos geblieben und vorbeigekommen ist, haben beide gerufen und sich gegenseitig Nähe gezeigt.

Shooting into the sun presented the problem of not knowing exactly what I'd capture, but I thought I'd get some good shots. I was pleased that I got a number of good sunstars (in other posts) and general portraits including this one.
Here, I like the dark background with the subtle glow behind the bird's head.
I shot this handheld at 500mm from a kayak in calm water.

Das Eurasische Eichhörnchen (Sciurus vulgaris), häufig nur als Eichhörnchen bekannt, ist ein Nagetier aus der Familie der Hörnchen (Sciuridae). Es ist der einzige natürlich in Mitteleuropa vorkommende Vertreter aus der Gattung der Eichhörnchen und wird zur Unterscheidung von anderen Arten wie dem Kaukasischen Eichhörnchen und dem in Europa eingebürgerten Grauhörnchen auch als Europäisches Eichhörnchen bezeichnet.
Regionale Bezeichnungen des Tieres sind Eichkätzchen, Eichkatz(er)l, Eichkater, überdies – umgesetzt aus der jeweiligen Mundartform – Eicher(li) (Schweiz), Eichhase (Österreich), Baumfuchs (Hessen), Konradchen (Nassau), Eichhalm (Württemberg) sowie niederdeutsch Katteker (Katzeicher) und Ekenaape (Eichenaffe). The red squirrel or Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a species of tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus common throughout Eurasia. The red squirrel is an arboreal, primarily herbivorous rodent.
In Great Britain, Ireland, and in Italy numbers have decreased drastically in recent years. This decline is associated with the introduction by humans of the eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) from North America. However, the population in Scotland is stabilising[3] due to conservation efforts, awareness and the increasing population of the pine marten, a European predator that selectively controls grey squirrels.

This Great Northern Diver, a welcome winter visitor, has been entertaining birders this week at Farmoor Reservoir in Oxfordshire. The largest of the UK's divers, it has a bigger, heavier head and bill than its commoner relatives. It is largely a winter visitor to our shores although some non-breeding birds stay off northern coasts in the summer.
This Common Loon was enjoying the morning sun.

We still have the most beautiful winter up in the Black Forest.
Temperatures are mild, + 5 during the day up in the mountains.
It is great to escape the grey days down in the city during inversion temperature like it was today. Not much signs of spring yet (despite the 'longer' days AND first birdsongs).
Beginning of Spring is March 21th..
This image is taken during the upcoming sunset on the "Schauinsland" mountain, the "house mountain" of Freiburg, 20 km East of the city.
In an altitude of 1 200 m grow these famous Beech trees - we call them the "Wind beeches". They are formed by the (sometimes strong) winds coming almost from the West - therefore they grow to the East. I love and admire them.

Winterfreuden
...wie schon lange nicht mehr...Wir haben immer noch herrliche Wintertage im Schwarzwald. Sonnenschein oben in den Bergen, milde Temperaturen und noch genügend Schnee für Wintersport.
Gut, bei Inversionswetterlage dem trüben Wetter unten entfliehen zu können und hinauf in die Sonne zu fahren.
Zwar sind die Tage 'länger' geworden, die Vögel zwitschern erste Lieder aber ansonsten noch keine großen Anzeichen des Frühlings, der ja am 21. März beginnt. Bis dahin genieße ich die sonnigen Tage und Wintersport in den Bergen, so oft ich kann.
Das Foto ist bei beginnendem Sonnenuntergang auf dem Schauinsland, Freiburg's Hausberg,aufgenommen. (2o km östlich von der Stadt und leicht erreichbar mit einer Seilbahn).
In einer Höhe von ca. 1200 m wachsen diese knorrigen Rotbuchen. Wir nennen sie die "Windbuchen"...über viele Jahrzehnte geformt durch einen meist aus dem Westen kommenden, kräftigen Wind, wachsen sie in Richtung Osten (sogenannte 'Windflüchter'). Ich liebe diese Bäume.
