The resonant call of the loon is a familiar and comforting sound, famous across the province of Ontario. Common loons (Gavia immer) are monogamous and mate for life. They use their yodelling calls to locate their mates, to alert their flock and to signify their territory. Loons feed on smaller fish, and can dive below the surface for several minutes. Loons can be found from Lake Erie to James Bay in Ontario. Though the species is not endangered, many loons wash up on shores each year, having been killed by motor boats, fish hooks, and becoming tangled in plastic or fishing line. You can help the loons by using barbless fishing hooks as well as practicing no trace camping by picking up plastic beverage netting, litter and fishing line.
