Photographed the Common Loon on Pearl Lake located in the Town of Schumacher in the City of Timmins Northeastern Ontario Canada
After the loon chick hatches, it rides around on the back of a parent in the lake. The other parent feeds it small minnows and this also keeps the chick safe from snapping turtles. Taken from my canoe on Lake of Two Rivers.

During its crayfish fishing the common loon approached the dike of Lake Michelbach for a short time. A great opportunity to capture the details of this beautiful northern visitor.

A bird still very much on my photographic wish list is the Great Northern Diver.
This one was out in the bay at quite some distance from shore.
Th GND is the UK's largest diver and a regular though distant sighting for me. Perhaps 2019 will be my year.

" It's there all the time, driving me out to wander the streets, following me, silently, but I can feel it there. It's me, pursuing myself! I want to escape, to escape from myself! But it's impossible. I can't escape, I have to obey it. I have to run, run... endless streets. I want to escape, to get away! And I'm pursued by ghosts. Ghosts of mothers and of those children... they never leave me. They are always there... always, always, always!, except when I do it, when I... Then I can't remember anything. And afterwards I see those posters and read what I've done, and read, and read... did I do that? But I can't remember anything about it! But who will believe me? Who knows what it's like to be me? How I'm forced to act... how I must, must... don't want to, must! Don't want to, but must! And then a voice screams! I can't bear to hear it! I can't go on! I can't... I can't..."

The Ilhornstift is still a social housing foundation and consists of two buildings:
The front building directly on Glockengießerstraße 39. It had been designated by the founder as a poor house for 20 needy widows.
The courtyard building from 1457 is free-standing a few meters behind it. It is partly timber-framed (which is rare in Lübeck's old town) and has an unusually steep gable roof.

About
The great northern diver is a large water bird, which is mostly a winter visitor to the UK. Great northern divers breed in Greenland, Iceland and North America, where they're called common loons. There have been occasional records of them breeding in Scotland, but these are very rare.
They breed on large woodland lakes or pools on tundra, with the male and female working together to build the nest on an island or shoreline.. They are excellent swimmers, using their large feet to chase after small fish under the water.
Great northern divers usually spend the winter on the sea, favouring shallow areas close to shore. They can sometimes be seen migrating along the coast singly or in small flocks.
How to identify
Divers look a little bit like cormorants, swimming with their large bodies low in the water and their long neck held upright. The great northern diver is a hefty bird, with a thick neck and a large, heavy bill. They often look as if they have a big bump on the forehead.
In their winter plumage, adults have a plain black back, neck and head, with a white throat and belly, and a darker half-collar at the base of the neck. In their summer breeding plumage, they have a dark black head and neck with a black-and-white-striped patch on the side of the neck, and a black back with a white chequered pattern.
Distribution
In winter, great northern divers can most often be found off the coast of Scotland, northern, eastern and south-west England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. They can sometimes be found on inland lakes and reservoirs.

Did you know?
Great northern divers have a haunting call that is often used in films and television shows to add a wild or spooky atmosphere to a scene. It's often used in locations where divers aren't even found! WT Notes.
I always enjoy photographing the impressive EURO DUAL locomotives from Stadler. On 23 August 2023, I met 159 209 near Dollnstein with a tank wagon train to the refineries in the Ingolstadt area.
Like I said before... there is nothing "common" about a Common Loon.
When he flapped his wings after preening, I was lucky enough to catch this series of this extraordinary bird.
He was busy catching crabs and at times fighting with another bird in breeding plumage who repeatedly tried to drag him under and drive him across the water. Soon that relented and they began to tolerate each other. I think their hormones levels are high at this time.
I felt at peace as I lay down and watched these two birds go about their business. They couldn't care less about our presence as they swam closer and closer and directly to us. It was a magical moment as our faces met. Even in the moment I couldn't stop from saying "Wow". They cried out their wailing calls several times to each other. I never tire of that sound. I felt blessed to be in their presence.
Whenever life gets tough, getting out in nature and with the birds just lifts me back up again. This is especially true when I get to spend time in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with my favourite person and one of my favourite birds, the Common Loon.
Unfortunately, the Škoda sets for the Munich-Nuremberg Express are still a real problem child. Especially the coaches cause trouble and this often leads to the cancellation of entire trains. On 01 October 2021, I spotted 102 002 with RE 4019 on its way to Munich main station near Vierkirchen.

Again and again one sees these scenes at train and bus stations in Sri Lanka. The cohesion in the families is much more pronounced than in our country. Since the social system is not so present, the family becomes the support, especially in old age. It is such a cordial togetherness that it touches you strongly, as a foreign observer.
