This hefty diving bird is a winter visitor to the UK, where it can be seen around the coast or occasionally on large inland lakes.

Length: around 80cm
Wingspan: 122-148cm
Conservation status
Classified in the UK as Amber under the Birds of Conservation Concern 4: the Red List for Birds (2015).
When to see: Most likely to be seen in winter, or on migration in autumn and spring.
About
The great northern diver is a large water bird, which is mostly a winter visitor to the UK. Great northern divers breed in Greenland, Iceland and North America, where they're called common loons. There have been occasional records of them breeding in Scotland, but these are very rare.
They breed on large woodland lakes or pools on tundra, with the male and female working together to build the nest on an island or shoreline.. They are excellent swimmers, using their large feet to chase after small fish under the water.
Great northern divers usually spend the winter on the sea, favouring shallow areas close to shore. They can sometimes be seen migrating along the coast singly or in small flocks.
How to identify
Divers look a little bit like cormorants, swimming with their large bodies low in the water and their long neck held upright. The great northern diver is a hefty bird, with a thick neck and a large, heavy bill. They often look as if they have a big bump on the forehead.
In their winter plumage, adults have a plain black back, neck and head, with a white throat and belly, and a darker half-collar at the base of the neck. In their summer breeding plumage, they have a dark black head and neck with a black-and-white-striped patch on the side of the neck, and a black back with a white chequered pattern.
Distribution
In winter, great northern divers can most often be found off the coast of Scotland, northern, eastern and south-west England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. They can sometimes be found on inland lakes and reservoirs.

Like I said before... there is nothing "common" about a Common Loon.
When he flapped his wings after preening, I was lucky enough to catch this series of this extraordinary bird.
He was busy catching crabs and at times fighting with another bird in breeding plumage who repeatedly tried to drag him under and drive him across the water. Soon that relented and they began to tolerate each other. I think their hormones levels are high at this time.
I felt at peace as I lay down and watched these two birds go about their business. They couldn't care less about our presence as they swam closer and closer and directly to us. It was a magical moment as our faces met. Even in the moment I couldn't stop from saying "Wow". They cried out their wailing calls several times to each other. I never tire of that sound. I felt blessed to be in their presence.
Whenever life gets tough, getting out in nature and with the birds just lifts me back up again. This is especially true when I get to spend time in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with my favourite person and one of my favourite birds, the Common Loon.

Leider immer noch rechte Sorgenkinder sind die Garnituren von Škoda für den München-Nürnberg-Express. Insbesondere die Wagen machen Probleme und das führt häufig zum Ausfall ganzer Züge. Am 01. Oktober 2021 begegnete mir 102 002 mit dem RE 4019 auf der Fahrt nach München HBF bei Vierkirchen.
Unfortunately, the Škoda sets for the Munich-Nuremberg Express are still a real problem child. Especially the coaches cause trouble and this often leads to the cancellation of entire trains. On 01 October 2021, I spotted 102 002 with RE 4019 on its way to Munich main station near Vierkirchen.

Yesterday, we gave here a name: Ursula
wirkte das Bild gestern in farbe nicht, so braucht dieses Bild die farbe. Ohne Farbe und nur sw wäre der Treppenaufgang ein dunkler Schlauch.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber - Einer hat einen erhöhten Standort zum Fotografieren
Die Strassengabelung Plönlein gehört zu den bekanntesten Sehenswürdigkeiten in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Hier befindet sich das Kobolzeller Tor und der Siebersturm. Das Kobolzeller Tor wurde im 16 Jahrhundert als Teil einer Wehranlage errichtet.

Es ist immer wieder spannend, den Blick über die Elbe auf die historische Altstadt von Lauenburg mit den alten Fachwerkhäusern und dem Raddampfer "Kaiser Wilhelm" zu werfen, ganz besonders in der Weihnachtszeit mit festlicher Beleuchtung und bei untergehender Sonne

Immer wieder beeindruckend ist die einzigartige Architektur des Landwasserviadukts. Mit dem letzten Zug des Tages vor Sonnenuntergang überquert Ge 6/6 II Nr. 704 das bekannte Bauwerk.
Always impressive is the unique architecture of the Landwasser viaduct. With the last train before sunset, Ge 6/6 II No. 704 crosses the famous structure.
Fast auf der gesamten Fahrt von Freudenstadt nach Offenburg, folgen die Züge der SWEG dem Lauf der Kinzig. Noch bis Dezember dieses Jahres verkehren die altbekannten Regioshuttle, auf der schön im Tal gelegenen Strecke. Danach sollen hier neue Triebwagen vom Typ Mireo Plus B verkehren. Wer also nochmals etwas Diesel auf der Strecke fotografieren will, sollte dies dieses Jahr tun! Noch etwas weiter entfernt davon, lag der 13. Februar 2022. An diesem Tag besuchte ich die Strecke vor allem wegen einer Sonderfahrt mit dem "Roten-Flitzer", doch auch dem Regelverkehr wurde etwas Beachtung geschenkt. Kurz vor der Schienenbus-Garnitur kam dieses Doppel aus Bwegt- und BSB-Regioshuttle durch Schiltach. Als SWE 88602 waren sie auf dem Weg nach Offenburg und durchfahren nach dem Bahnübergang den 117m langen Schiltacher Tunnel um kurz darauf im Bahnhof Schiltach einen Halt einzulegen
Auf einem Stellplatz in der Nähe haben wir die erste Nacht auf unserem Trip im Juli durch Norwegen und Schweden verbracht.
Einige Schauer fegten über uns hinweg, doch dann wurde das Wetter innerhalb von 2 Tagen immer besser.
Hier haben wir vor unserer Weiterfahrt noch einen kurzen Spaziergang unternommen.
We spent the first night of our trip through Norway and Sweden in July on a pitch nearby.
A few showers swept over us, but then the weather got better and better within 2 days.
We took a short walk here before continuing our journey.

Vanmiddag werd er aan de Rijn een keteltrein gezien richting het noorden met als trekkracht de 186 381. Nadat het bezoek vanmiddag weg was werd er even richting Helmond gereden voor de trein, deze was inmiddels onderweg vanuit Venlo. Na aankomst werd de ladder uitgeklapt en de camera gereed gehouden voor passage, het zou immers niet lang meer duren en je hebt hier weinig zicht op een aankomende trein. (Uiteraard) moest er weer lichtelijk roet in het eten worden gegooid door de NS door een kruising met de IC...
...rollt der SETG-Containerzug zur slowenischen Adriaküste durch das Allgäu. Mit 193 765 an der Spitze hat der DGS 43196 Wolfurt - Passau Gbf (- Enns) vor Kurzem Lindau verlassen und bei Höhenreute die ersten Höhenmeter erklommen.
