Buchen (Fagus)
Die Buchen (Fagus) sind die einzige Pflanzengattung der Unterfamilie der Fagoideae innerhalb der Familie der Buchengewächse (Fagaceae). Die etwa elf Arten besitzen eine weite Verbreitung in den gemäßigten Gebieten der Nordhalbkugel in Nordamerika und Eurasien.
Beschreibung
Buchen-Arten sind sommergrüne Bäume, die Wuchshöhen von bis zu 40 Metern erreichen. Ihre Rinde ist grau und glatt und zeigt nur selten im Alter eine geringe Borkenbildung, sie gehört daher zu den Peridermbäumen. Die dünn und hin- und hergebogenen Zweige besitzen eine braune Rinde. Die 1 bis 3 Zentimeter langen Knospen sind lang spindelförmig, oft spreizend, von brauner Farbe, mit zahlreichen Knospenschuppen bedeckt und silbrig behaart.
Die Laubblätter stehen wechselständig, an aufrechten Zweigen schraubig, an abstehenden sind sie mehr oder weniger zweizeilig angeordnet. Die Laubblätter sind in Blattstiel und Blattspreite gegliedert. Die Blattspreite ist glänzend grün, ganzrandig, leicht buchtig gezähnt, wellig gebuchtet oder fein gezähnt. Die Nebenblätter sind schmal und hinfällig.
Beech (Fagus)
Beech (Fagus) is a genus of deciduous trees in the family Fagaceae, native to temperate Europe, Asia, and North America. Recent classifications recognize 10 to 13 species in two distinct subgenera, Engleriana and Fagus. The Engleriana subgenus is found only in East Asia, distinctive for their low branches, often made up of several major trunks with yellowish bark. The better known Fagus subgenus beeches are high-branching with tall, stout trunks and smooth silver-grey bark. The European beech (Fagus sylvatica) is the most commonly cultivated.
Beeches are monoecious, bearing both male and female flowers on the same plant. The small flowers are unisexual, the female flowers borne in pairs, the male flowers wind-pollinating catkins. They are produced in spring shortly after the new leaves appear. The fruit of the beech tree, known as beechnuts or mast, is found in small burrs that drop from the tree in autumn. They are small, roughly triangular and edible, with a bitter, astringent, or in some cases, mild and nut-like taste. They have a high enough fat content that they can be pressed for edible oil.
The European species Fagus sylvatica yields a utility timber that is tough but dimensionally unstable. It is widely used for furniture framing and carcase construction, flooring and engineering purposes, in plywood and in household items like plates, but rarely as a decorative wood. The timber can be used to build chalets, houses, and log cabins.
Beech wood also makes excellent firewood, easily split and burning for many hours with bright but calm flames. Slats of washed beech wood are spread around the bottom of fermentation tanks for Budweiser beer. Beech logs are burned to dry the malt used in some German smoked beers, giving the beers their typical flavor. Beech is also used to smoke Westphalian ham, various sausages, and some cheeses.
Radtour entlang der Rhone von der Quelle bis zur Mündung.
Unsere Urlaube haben wir fast immer auf dem Fahrrad, verbracht. An Hand eines Radreiseführers bestimmten wir den täglichen Radweg von Hotel zu Hotel. In jedem dritten Hotel wartete ein Päckchen mit frischer Wäsche, Shirts und Strümpfen etc. , die gebrauchte Wäsche wurde auf dem gleichen Weg nach Hause versendet. So konnten wir das Gewicht reduzieren. Die Gepäcktaschen waren auf dem Gepäckständer befestigt und das was wir schnell erreichen mussten war am Lenker in einer Tasche untergebracht.
Als Radreisender lernt man viel über die Verhaltensweisen von Autofahrern in den verschieden Europäischen Länder kennen. Gut und sicher fährt man in Holland und Frankreich, hier nehmen die Autofahren viel Rücksicht, halten Abstand reduzieren die Geschwindigkeit oder fahren ohne zu hupen hinterher. Ih Italien ist es das krasse Gegenteil.
Wir haben auf unseren Reisen viele nette Menschen kennengelernt,und die schönen Landschaften genießen dürfen.
Unsere Reiseplanung richtete sich nach dem jeweiligen Fluss, hier war es die Rhone. Gestartet sind wir in Oberwald unterhalb des Furkapasses, 1. Ziel war Genf. Im Jahr 2006 sind wir in Genf gestartet, 2. Ziel war im Rhonedelta die Fischerstadt Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.
Eine anstrengende Radtour, viele Steigungen, und Abfahrten mit großem Gefälle, das kostet Zeit und Kraft. Belohnt wurden wir mit fantastischen Landschaften und herrlichen Weitblicken über die Schweizer Alpen am Genfer See.
Sind wir nicht geradelt, dann waren wir mit Freunden wandern.
Mit der Pandemie waren Rad- und Wandereisen beendet, leider.

Cycling along the Rhone from its source to its mouth.
We almost always spent our holidays on our bikes. Using a cycling guidebook, we determined the daily cycling route from hotel to hotel. In every third hotel there was a package with fresh laundry, shirts and socks etc., and the used laundry was put on the bike. The used laundry was sent home the same way. This way we were able to reduce the weight. The panniers were fixed on the luggage rack and what we needed to reach quickly was stored on the handlebars in a bag.
As a cyclist you learn a lot about the behaviour of drivers in different European countries. You ride well and safely in Holland and France, where car drivers show a lot of consideration, keep their distance, reduce their speed or drive behind without honking. In Italy it is the complete opposite.
We met many nice people on our travels and were able to enjoy the beautiful landscapes.
We planned our trip according to the river, here it was the Rhone. We started in Oberwald below the Furka Pass and our first destination was Geneva. In 2006 we started in Geneva, 2nd destination was the fishing town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the Rhone delta.
A strenuous cycle tour, many ascents and descents with large gradients, which cost time and energy. We were rewarded with fantastic landscapes and magnificent views over the Swiss Alps on Lake Geneva.
When we weren't cycling, we were hiking with friends.
With the pandemic, cycling and hiking trips came to an end, unfortunately.

Tour à vélo le long du Rhône, de la source à l'embouchure.
Nous avons presque toujours passé nos vacances à vélo. A l'aide d'un guide de cyclotourisme, nous déterminions l'itinéraire quotidien à vélo d'hôtel en hôtel. Dans un hôtel sur trois, un paquet de linge propre, de chemises, de bas, etc. nous attendait. Le linge usagé était renvoyé à la maison par le même chemin. Cela nous a permis de réduire le poids. Les sacs étaient fixés sur le porte-bagages et ce que nous devions atteindre rapidement était placé dans une poche sur le guidon.
En tant que cycliste, on apprend beaucoup sur le comportement des automobilistes dans les différents pays européens. On roule bien et en toute sécurité en Hollande et en France, où les automobilistes font preuve de beaucoup d'égards, gardent leurs distances, réduisent leur vitesse ou roulent derrière sans klaxonner. En Italie, c'est tout le contraire.
Lors de nos voyages, nous avons rencontré beaucoup de gens sympathiques et avons pu profiter des beaux paysages.
Nous avons planifié notre voyage en fonction du fleuve, ici le Rhône. Nous sommes partis d'Oberwald, en dessous du col de la Furka, et notre première destination était Genève. En 2006, nous sommes partis de Genève, la deuxième destination était la ville de pêcheurs des Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, dans le delta du Rhône.
Une randonnée à vélo éprouvante, beaucoup de montées, et des descentes avec une grande déclivité, cela prend du temps et de l'énergie. Nous avons été récompensés par des paysages fantastiques et des vues imprenables sur les Alpes suisses, au bord du lac Léman.
Lorsque nous ne faisions pas de vélo, nous faisions des randonnées avec des amis.
La pandémie a mis fin aux voyages à vélo et aux randonnées, malheureusement.

Merci à mon généreux hôte, Guy Morneau, qui m'aura à nouveau permis de vivre cette toujours belle expérience que celle d'aller à la rencontre de ce si bel oiseau en compagnie de ses petits à peine sortie du nid.
Premier volet | À la rencontre du Prince de nos lacs
Lors de mon dernier passage en ce lieu, en juillet 2018, le lac avait été couvert de brume, cette fois-ci la brume n'y était pas mais les nuages couvraient toujours le ciel laissant passer de temps à autres quelques faibles rayons de soleil. Ce qui n'aura pas empêché la rencontre d'être encore des plus fameuses. Arrivée au petit matin nous aurons été en mesure d'observer, pendant près de deux heures, les parents nourrir continuellement leurs petits avant de les voir tour à tour se reposer de longues minutes avec leurs rejetons bien installés sur leur dos. La magie aura de nouveau opérée! Merci Sylvie, merci Guy!

I am back from my trip to Invermere, BC. This unusual looking Common Loon was a highlight.

Immer wieder ist es beeindruckend wie die Sonne die Lotusblüte zum Leuchten bringt. Ohne das Sonnenlicht sieht die Blüte nicht so transparent und farbkräftig aus. Es nicht verwunderlich das die Lotusblüten in Asien so hoch geschätzt werden. Das Foto machte ich aus der Froschperspektive heraus. Blüte und Himmel geben dem Bild tolle Farbkontraste. Dieses Fotografie entstand im Botanischen Garten in Erlangen. Viel Spaß beim betrachten.

This little chick was staying close to his mom. His sibling was predated the day before unfortunately. Hoping for the best for this little one. On the water yesterday I saw 8 Common Loons, 1 on the nest and 3 chicks.

I feel like the push and pull occurs mentally with kids now and more with screens than anything else. It was refreshing to visit the Pop Up Book Exhibit at the Newberry Library in Chicago and see some of these. This one is from a book called Immer Froh Tagaus, Tagein by Cornelie Lechler and is from 1893 (well before smart phones and ipads!) Here's some more information:

Haus Bürgel blickt auf eine spannende und wechselvolle Geschichte zurück. Bereits im 1. Jh n. Chr. Siedlung von römische Soldaten am Rhein, der Grenze zu den germanischen Stämmen.
Als im 4. Jahrhundert die Einfälle der Franken aus dem rechtsrheinischen Raum immer häufiger wurden, erbauten die Römer eine Kette von Militärkastellen am linken Rheinufer. 14 Jh.: Rheinverlagerung, das ursprünglich linksrheinisch erbaute Haus Bürgel liegt seitdem auf der rechten Rheinseite. Das Kastell, auf dessen heute noch sichtbaren Fundamenten Haus Bürgel ruht, besaß dicke Mauern und zwölf Türme. Im frühen Mittelalter wurde auf der Ruine des Kastells eine fränkische Burganlage errichtet.
1698 – 1989: Bewirtschaftung des Gutshofs im Besitz der Grafen von Nesselrode
Haus Bürgel beinhaltet heute eine biologische Station, eine Kaltblutzucht und ein römisches Museum
2020: Antragstellung zur Aufnahme in die UNESCO Weltkulturerbe Liste
Haus Bürgel looks back on an exciting and eventful history. As early as the 1st cent. Chr. settlement of Roman soldiers on the Rhine, the border to the Germanic tribes.
When the invasions of the Franks from the area on the right bank of the Rhine became more frequent in the 4th century, the Romans built a chain of military forts on the left bank of the Rhine. 14th century: Relocation of the Rhine, Haus Bürgel, originally built on the left bank of the Rhine, has since been located on the right bank of the Rhine. The fort, on whose foundations Haus Bürgel still rests today, had thick walls and twelve towers. In the early Middle Ages, a Frankish castle complex was built on the ruins of the fort.
1698 - 1989: Management of the estate in the possession of the Counts of Nesselrode
Today, Haus Bürgel contains a biological station, a cold-blood breeding farm and a Roman museum
2020: Application for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List

Bundesweit sind sie immer öfter an Fenstern zu sehen: von Kindern gemalte Regenbogen.
Die Kinder malen ihre Regenbogen nicht nur auf Papier, manche Regenbogen erstrecken sich über das ganze Fenster. Sie sind mit Fernsterfarben angebracht. Teilweise ist auf den Bogen auch noch der Zusatz "Alles wird gut" zu lesen.
Das Foto ist zusammengesetzt aus zwei Bildern.
Nationwide, they are increasingly visible on windows: rainbows painted by children.
The children don't just paint their rainbows on paper, some rainbows extend all over the window. They are affixed with fernster colours. In some cases, the addition "Everything will be good" can also be read on the sheet.
The photo is composed of two images.

Sonnenuntergang an den Schrammsteinen - je nach Jahreszeit und Wetter immer ein völlig anderes Bild. Hier war die Sonne lange hinter einer geschlossenen Wolkendecke versteckt bis sie sich kurz vor dem Untergang doch noch sehen ließ.
Wasser wird immer knapper , Seen und auch Flüsse trocknen immer mehr aus .Ich stehe hier im Flußbett der Elbe in Magedeburg . Normal hätte ich jetzt mehr als nasse Füße.
Water is becoming increasingly scarce, lakes and rivers are drying up more and more. I am standing here in the river bed of the Elbe in Magedeburg. Normally I would now have more than wet feet.
Norwegen, hier im Folgefonna Nationalpark, ist immer eine Reise wert und da wir lange nicht in diesem schönen Land waren, ist unser Urlaubsziel für nächstes Jahr in Planung, natürlich mit unserem neuen Wohnmobil

...fuhr der Starzug 49411 von Baalberge nach Polen. 232 189 ist am 21.2.2015 bei Mückenhain auf dem Weg nach Görlitz. Die H-Masten sind letzten Herbst leider gefallen, somit geht der typische Reichsbahnflair dieser Strecke nun endgültig verloren.
Buntspecht - Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)
The little great spotted woodpecker, which doesn't look so small here in the picture, is the smallest of our native woodpeckers. He is about 20 to 25 cm high and is a very shy bird.
I've tried sneaking up on one before. So far, however, they have always flown away before I got close enough to take a picture. Now I've finally succeeded. As you can see from the red spot on the neck, this is a male specimen.
Here, too, the quality of the image is unfortunately not optimal, because this picture is also from the cloudy morning when I photographed some other birds that you have already seen. Nevertheless, I am very happy to finally have the great spotted woodpecker in my collection.
Der kleine Buntspecht, der hier auf dem Bild garnicht so klein wirkt, ist der kleinste unserer heimischen Spechte. Er wird ca. 20 bis 25 cm hoch und ist ein sehr scheuer Vogel.
Ich habe mich schon oft versucht an einen heran zu schleichen. Bisher sind sie jedoch immer davon geflogen noch bevor ich nah genug heran gekommen bin um ein Foto zu machen. Jetzt ist es mir endlich mal gelungen. Wie man an dem roten Fleck im Nacken sehen kann, handelt es sich hier um ein männliches Exemplar.
Auch hier ist die Qualität der Aufnahme leider nicht optimal, denn auch dieses Bild stammt vom dem trüben morgen an dem ich noch einige andere Vögel fotografiert habe, die Ihr schon gesehen habt. Trotzdem bin ich sehr froh darüber den Buntspecht endlich in meiner Sammlung zu haben.

Troisième volet | Nourrir, grandir...
Impressionnant de voir le nombre de larves qui furent apportées aux petits durant les deux heures où nous les avons accompagné. Il est même arrivé à quelques reprises que les petits refusaient la petite proie proposée. Amusantes scènes. Même lorsque les petits se sont retrouvés sur le dos d'un des parents l'autre continuait, de temps à autres, de proposer de la nourriture qui souvent se ramassait sur le plumage de l'adulte tout près du petit, alors le dit adulte relayait le pourvoyeur en tentant à son tour de redonner la becquée. Parfois cela fonctionnait. Assurément les parents sont obsédés par leur désir de voir grandir rapidement leurs petits. L'appel de la nature fait encore admirablement son oeuvre!

Immer sonntags verkehrt der LTE "Kokszug" von Holland in die Steiermark. Dank einer 300 minütigen Verspätung passte der Zug vom Licht gut für die bekannte Stelle im Gesäuse - die 187 932 war in Passau vor die 186 298 vorgespannt worden.
Zona maritima lindante con el Parque Natural del Prat de Cabanes, en este lugar todavia se pueden encontrar zonas de playas virgenes y sin aglomeraciones de gente.
Maritime Gebiet grenzt an den Naturpark von Prat de Cabanes, an diesem Ort können Sie immer noch unberührte Strände und keine Menschenmassen finden.
