Every once in a while you are at the right place at the right time... :-)
We stoppped by Tunkwa Lake today for a few minutes, hoping to see a few birds. And did! I noticed the loons hanging out at the south end (day-use area) of the Lake - where there were a number of people fishing.
Overhead a few ospreys went by. I kept watching the loons, and happened to look up after a time just as an osprey went in for a dive. It actually pulled up at the last minute and grabbed the fish off the top of the water.
As usual, the osprey took a bit of time to get moving, and out of nowhere the loon powered in from the right side of the picture - attempting to grab the fish. Evasive actions ensued and it missed - but I got a picture I don't think I'll forget!
Addendum note: I realized in retrospect that the Ospreys on this lake at least) which is full of fish (you should seen the number of fishers in boats!) must do their best to pick the fish off the top of the water, rather than submerge and meet up with the loons that loom in the depths and shallows!

On April 24th I walked to a nearby storm water pond. The ice was gone now. Another busy day on the small pond!
It was a real treat to have an eared grebe and a common loon visiting for a day or two!

Scientific name: Misumena vatia
Wetenschappelijke naam: Misumena vatia
Misumena vatia is a species of crab spider with holarctic distribution. In North America, where it is the largest and best-known flower spider, it is called the goldenrod crab spider or flower (crab) spider because it is commonly found hunting in goldenrod sprays in the autumn.
These spiders may be yellow or white, depending on the flower in which they are hunting. Especially younger females, which may hunt on a variety of flowers such as daisies and sunflowers, may change color "at will". Older females require large amounts of relatively large prey to produce the best possible clutch of eggs. They are therefore, in North America, most commonly found in goldenrod (Solidago sp.), a bright yellow flower which attracts large numbers of insects, especially in autumn. It is often very hard even for a searching human to recognize one of these spiders on a yellow flower. These spiders are sometimes called banana spiders because of their striking yellow color.
De gewone kameleonspin (Misumena vatia) een merkwaardige spin uit de familie van de krabspinnen.
Deze spin maakt geen web. Ze zit verscholen (kameleon) tussen de bloemen en wacht geduldig op een prooi. Die prooi kan tot 3x groter zijn. Hun gif is snelwerkend en sterk. Het eigenaardige aan deze spin is dat ze net als een kameleon de kleur van de bloem waarop ze kruipen aannemen. De krabspin hoeft geen web te maken en wacht geduldig op de bloem tot haar prooien de bloemen komen bestuiven. Zo kan ze dagen tot weken op eenzelfde hinderlaag blijven zitten. Eenmaal een insect afkomt op de nectar van de bloem is het een gemakkelijk slachtoffer voor de spin. Een ander voordeel van de camouflage is dat de spin veiliger is voor vogels en andere predatoren.
Om van kleur te veranderen doet deze spin er echter langer over dan een kameleon. De kleurverandering van wit naar geel duurt 10 tot 25 dagen en terug van geel naar wit duurt 6 dagen.
In het najaar zijn deze kameleonspinnen vaak te vinden op guldenroede. Deze gele bloemen trekken veel insecten aan en zijn dus het ideale jachtterrein voor deze kameleonspin.
De krabspinnen kiezen bij voorkeur witte of gele bloemen waar ze zich verschuilen tussen de stamper en meeldraden.
Hun groepsnaam (krabspinnen) hebben ze te danken aan de vaak eigenaardige voortbeweging, namelijk zijdelings zoals krabben op het strand. Naast het zijdelings lopen kunnen ze zich ook gewoon voorwaarts verplaatsen.
In tegenstelling tot de vele ren spinnen die direct wegrennen blijven ze meestal geduldig zitten, ze zijn immers heel moeilijk waarneembaar.
Normaal is de krabspin wit, ze kan echter gele kleurstof in de buitenste cellenlagen van het lichaam haar pompen.
Dat is handig als ze op jacht gaat op een gele bloem.
De vrouwelijke kameleon onder de spinnen is ongeveer 1 cm groot, de mannetjes worden slechts half zo groot.
Haar voorste twee poten zijn in het algemeen groter en zwaarder gebouwd dan de overige zes poten. Met gespreide voorpoten wacht ze haar prooi op.

Great Northern Diver [Gavia immer] with broken lower mandible. Still able to feed itself.
Immer gern von mir fotografiert wird die klassische Güterzuglok der Baureihe 151. Am 31. August 2016 kam mit 151 169 eine Lok in Hermannspiegel vorbeigefahren, die eine zeitlang eine automatische Kupplung besaß. Am Haken hatte sie den aus Schiebehandwagen bestehenden EZ 51025 von Maschen nach Mannheim Rangierbahnhof.
Always one of my favorite objects: Classy Co-Co engine class 151 of DB Cargo. At the 31st of August 2016 151 169 passed my photo-spot at Hermannspiegel on the north-south-corridor. It hauled mixed freight train EZ 51025 from Maschen near Hamburg to Mannheim shunting yard.
This Common Loon (Gavia immer) is just about to dive again for another fish to feed its young chick. The warm light and lower angle of the setting sun illuminates it's bright red eyes making them look almost crazy. I love the water beading on its head, additional red eyes reflecting in the rippled water, and the colors of the water. I wondered if this might be part of the reason behind the expression, "crazy like a loon." Taken in Tomahawk, Wisconsin. (Best viewed large.)

Tromsø war immer schon DER Ausgangspunkt für Arktisexpeditionen. In der Stadt gibt es Polarinstitute, Polarmuseen, Polaruniversitäten. Ein Held der Stadt ist Roald Amundsen. Er war einer der Ersten am Nordpol, durchfuhr als Erster die Nordwest-Passage und er war auch der erste Mensch am Südpol.
Mich persönlich verbindet mit Amundsen seit jeher auch meine akribische Vorbereitung auf alle meiner Unternehmungen. Und so schließe ich mich stets Amundsens Worten an:
Es gibt keine Abenteuer, nur schlechte Vorbereitung.

Tromsø has always been THE starting point for Arctic expeditions. The city has polar institutes, polar museums and polar universities. One of the city's heroes is Roald Amundsen. He was one of the first to reach the North Pole, the first to sail through the Northwest Passage and he was also the first person to reach the South Pole.
Personally, I have always been connected to Amundsen through my meticulous preparation for all my ventures. And so I always agree with Amundsen's words:
There are no adventures, only bad preparation.

Die Grünfinken sind die "vorsichtigsten" Vögel in meinem Garten. Es hat mehrere Monate gedauert bis sie nicht mehr sofort geflüchtet sind sobald sie mich entdecken und so konnte ich endlich dieses Männchen fotografieren. Gross bewegen darf ich mich aber noch immer nicht. Für diese Aufnahme habe ich mich eine dreiviertel Stunde in den Schatten gesetzt und gewartet.
Um das Bild besonders detailreich sehen zu können, drückt die Tasten l (kleines L) und F11. Beim vergrößern nur durch anklicken gehen viele Details verloren.
The Green Finches are the most cautious birds in my garden. It took some months till they did not took flight the moment they spotted me and I could take this photograph eventually. I must not move too much though. Hence I sat down in the shade for about three quarters of an hour and waited for the finch to drop by.
