Also known as a Common Loon
I spent about two and a half hours photographing this guy today. A lot of hanging around for him to come in close, especially when the coastguard helicopter was flying above us. But I am very pleased with a lot of the 466 shots I took today. More to come later.

Noch immer ist bei der WLE eine Lok aus dem Hause Deutz im Einsatz: die im Jahr 1962 in den Dienst gestellte Lok 36 vom Typ DG 1000 BBM. Hier sehen wir die Maschine vor einem leeren Kalksteinzug aus Beckum nach Warstein beim Verlassen des Bahnhofs Wadersloh, während im Hintergrund die St. Margareta Pfarrkirche die Szene bereichert.
At the WLE you can still find a locomotive build by the company Deutz in regular services: loco 36 from 1962 of the type DG 1000 BBM. On the picture the machine is leaving the station of Wadersloh with an empty limestone train from Beckum to Warstein, while in the background the church of St. Margareta enriches the scenery.
Immer morgens warteten wir zwischen Foggia und Ordona auf den ersten leeren Autozug nach San Nicola di Melfi. Nach dem morgendlichen Personenverkehr um etwa 08:00 Uhr kam dann der Zug herangefahren. Am Morgen des 17.09.2019 wurde er von den beiden FIAT-Diesellokomotiven D445 1150 + D345 1012 bespannt. Hier passiert er eine alte aufgelassenen Haltepunkt dessen verfallenes Empfangsgebäude noch zu erkennen ist. Zwischen Foggia und Ordona ist die Landschaft noch bretteben und sehr fruchtbar, was man an den vielen Feldern erkennen kann.
Every morning between Foggia and Ordona we waited for the first empty car train to San Nicola di Melfi. After the morning passenger traffic at about 8:00 a.m. the train came up. On the morning of September 17, 2019, he was hauled by the two FIAT diesel locomotives D445 1150 + D345 1012. Here he passes an old abandoned stop whose dilapidated reception building can still be seen. The landscape between Foggia and Ordona is still board-life and very fertile, which can be seen from the many fields.

C'est ma première rencontre avec le plongeon imbrin (ou plongeon huard) dont la présence était signalée depuis quelques jours. Il était resté assez loin hélas mais pour une première je vais me contenter de cette qualité moyenne.

Das Felsenmeer an der Kalmit hat mich schon lange gereizt. Wie immer, wenn man vor lauter Bäumen den Wald nicht mehr sieht,... nicht ganz einfach. Ich gehe nochmal hin, wenn es leicht neblig ist.
I always wanted to take some pictures of the "sea of rocks" near the Kalmit mountain. It was not easy. A lot of rocks and trees. I should go back when it is misty.
So sind die Hermeline meistens unterwegs. Oft scheint es als gäbe es für sie nur Vollgas oder Stillstand. Noch nie sah ich eines von ihnen in gemächlichem Tempo unterwegs.

Some shots are properly exposed and focused, but because I was hand holding a long lens, there is a slight amount of motion blur. In the past, no amount of sharpening would make those images appear sharp. Even Photoshop's shake reduction yielded marginal results, I just downloaded Topaz Sharpen AI, and I am pleasantly surprised (not a big plug-in user) after applying the software to some slightly soft images. I'm going to have fun going over my trove of slightly soft images and trying to give them a second life.
... immer wenn man sie nicht braucht. So musste sich auch hier ein ICE 1 in den Hintergrund drängeln als 156 002 und 187 420 durch das Kinzigtal bei Wächtersbach rollten. Die 156 002 ist eine von nur vier Lokomotiven der Baureihe 156 und gehört derzeit den Fahrzeugwerken Karsdorf (FWK).
FWK 156 002 and EBS 187 420 rolling up the Kinzig Valley near Waechtersbach, between Hanau and Fulda. The series 156 was one of the last locomotives constructed and built for the former DR (Deutsche Reichsbahn of the GDR). However, only four of them were finally built because DB found there was no need for a six axles loco without latest traction technology.

Au petit matin
Pour avoir croisé au loin à quelques reprises dans le passé ce prince des lacs, le Plongeon Huard demeure certes un des
oiseaux mytiques pour un photographe animalier, à tout le moins pour moi, au même titre d'ailleurs que la Chouette lapone... Je rêvais depuis longtemps d'aller à sa rencontre. Les fabuleuses et merveilleuses images récentes présentées par Pascale Forest, Simon Théberge, Richard Morel, François Poitras et Maxime Légaré-Vézina notamment, me permettaient d'espérer réaliser ce rêve. Maxime a généreusement accepté de m'y amener avec toute sa passion, sa disponibilité et son expertise. Une sortie inoubliable. C'est donc installé pour la toute première fois dans un kayak que j'allais glisser en silence et en douceur sur les eaux calmes du marais du nord et du lac Saint-Charles pour aller pour la toute première fois observer en toute proximité ce merveilleux oiseau avec son jeune adolescent maintenant âgé de cinq semaines. C'est donc dans une lumière du petit matin, cette lumière dite dorée, que j'ai avec beaucoup d'émotion observé, capté, savouré cette toute première rencontre. Pas évident de photographier dans une telle embarcation, les images des prochaines sorties ne pourront qu'en être meilleures. Voici une première image de maman et fiston. Il y en aura bien d'autres... Trop beau...
Von Bad Doberan bis Heiligendamm wir Molli von zwei Asphaltwegen flankiert. Zum einen Ein Radweg und zum Anderen die in einer Allee verlaufende Landesstraße 12. Welches dieser 3 Verkehrsmittel nun am schnellsten die knapp 15 Kilometer zwischen Bad Doberan und Kühlungsborn zurücklegt weiß ich nicht, 99 2322 war mit ihrem Zug jedenfalls sportlich unterwegs.
Ein Reiher und eine Ente am vermüllten Ufer des Kemnader Sees. Solche Szenen sehe ich bei meinen Fotowalks leider immer häufiger. Es ist erstaunlich wie Tiere - in diesem Fall Vögel - mit einer solchen Umweltsituation notgedrungen umgehen. Beim Kemnader See handelt es sich um eine Staustufe der Ruhr, also um ein fließendes Gewässer. Der herumliegende Abfall muss also nicht zwangsläufig von Besuchern des Freizeitgebietes stammen. Er kann natürlich auch von weither kommen und hier angeschwemmt werden - das macht die Situation natürlich nicht besser.

A heron and a duck on the littered shore of Lake Kemnader. Unfortunately, I see scenes like this more and more frequently on my photo walks. It is amazing how animals - in this case birds - deal with such an environmental situation out of necessity. The Kemnader See is a barrage of the Ruhr, i.e. a flowing body of water. The rubbish lying around does not necessarily have to come from visitors to the leisure area. Of course, it can also come from far away and be washed up here - that doesn't make the situation any better, of course.

Immer wenn man nach einigen Tagen zu den Pilzen zurückkehrt sind sie weg :)

NL - Géén primeur meer, maar hierbij toch mijn contributie voor de ersatzzug met Teutolok 110 250 op de RE19. Deze trein rijdt tot eind juni planmatig de trein om 06:35 uit Emmerich en om 16:12 uit Düsseldorf. Een ochtendfoto met mooi licht zat er voor mij niet in, puur vanwege het feit dat ik vóór 7 uur niet uit mijn bed te slepen ben - en als dat lukt, duurt het nog een tijdje voor ik opgestart ben. Wat een fraaie trein! Al toeterend passeert het geheel de fotografen bij Praest op 16 mei 2025. Ik stond hier overigens niet op de brug, maar besloot mijn redelijk recent gekochte hoogstatief uit te testen vanaf de trap: iets minder hoogte en iets meer vrijheid om een compositie te kiezen. Hoger dan dit durfde ik niet aan vanwege de wind.
FR - Alors que les services RE 19 sont d'habitude assurés en Flirt, un manque de matériel amène VIAS (l'opérateur habituel) à utiliser une rame historique pour cette liaison jusque fin juin. Les trains prévus sont ceux avec départ de 06:35 d'Emmerich et avec départ 16:12 depuis Düsseldorf, en semaine seulement. Voilà donc encore un train intéressant supplémentaire dans la région après l'utilisation de rames tractées sur Wuppertal - Venlo et sur Neuss - Krefeld les jours ouvrables. Passage à Praest sous les objectifs de quelques photographes.
