Candid Portraits from Paraiso School of Samba
The Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s biggest street festival is an annual grand event that has been held every year since 1965 on the streets of Notting Hill, London, UK in the month of August. It is led by members of the West Indian community, particularly the Trinidadian and Tobagonian British population or Trinis;, many of whom have lived in the area since the 1950s.
The carnival attracted around one million people last year, making it one of the largest street festivals in the world. More: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notting_Hill_Carnival
I feel pretty,
Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty and witty and bright!
And I pity
Any girl who isn't me tonight.

As I've noted in other sets of photos here on Flickr, I've been lucky enough to visit Rome dozens of times since I first celebrated a solitary birthday there back in 1972. Since then, I've often come alone (usually on business trips to lecture about various aspects of software development), and I've sometimes managed to bring various children and/or my wife. This time, like many other trips, I was alone.
On most of my trips, I make a point of visiting Piazza del Popolo at least once -- because there are always interesting scenes to photograph, with a combination of tourists, students, lovers, and amateur musicians. This time, there was a Michael Jackson impersonator -- who, at least from a distance, seemed to mimic MJ's fluid moves pretty well. And there was an electric guitarist, but it turned out that he could only play instrumentals -- and he tended to play the same songs, over and over again.
I photographed people in Piazza del Popolo on the first and last days of my visit; but I also spent a couple hours in Piazza Santa Margarita in Trastevere, where there was a wedding underway. And I strolled a block or two from my hotel to Piazza Cavour, where the entire piazza had been off-limits for years because of reconstruction work. But the reconstruction is over, the piazza is open, and I was lucky enough to be there during the "golden hour" before sunset, where I got some interesting photos of the local people enjoying a balmy early-summer evening.
On Sunday morning, I decided to visit the enormous "flea market" at Porta Portensa, where I did my best to get a few interesting shots of the shoppers, tourists, and long rows of merchant stalls filled with various forms of cheap, tacky merchandise. It was quite an experience...
As I have on past occasions, I took thousands of photos during my week-long visit, from which I select a few dozen to upload to Flickr. Hopefully they'll give you a sense of what it's like here in the Eternal City ...
I was flattered to be asked to do an engagement shoot for this couple back in July and will be taking photos at their wedding shower this coming weekend. I met with the bride-to-be this afternoon for dance (we both bellydance) and she showed me a copy of this photo that she had printed and framed. It was the first time I have ever seen one of my photos printed out. For a minute, I didn't feel like an imposter. The photo was beautiful. Looking at it again on here, I see flaws, but in that moment, I didn't. I may have to print out a couple of my photos and be proud of what I created at whatever point in my journey it was created.

I pretty much see the world through my view-finder only in black and white now... and I have no problem at all with that.

I'm totally inspired by this Marni Fall 09 look, featured below.

Note: I chose this photo, among the five that I uploaded to Flickr on the morning of Mar 30,2012, as my "photo of the day." I could not take my eyes off the giant sneakers the young woman was wearing. Unfortunately, the photo doesn't really show the rather bizarre tights that she was also wearing...

This is the continuation of a photo-project that I began in the summer of 2008 (which you can see in this Flickr set), and continued throughout 2009, 2010, and 2011 (as shown in this Flickr set, this Flickr set, and this Flickr set): a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan -- between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue. These are the people in my neighborhood, aka "peeps in the 'hood."
As I indicated when I first started this project nearly four years ago, I don't like to intrude on people's privacy, so I normally use a zoom telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they're still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what's right in front of me. Sometimes I find an empty bench on a busy street corner, and just sit quietly for an hour, watching people hustling past on the other side of the street; they're almost always so busy listening to their iPod, or talking on their cellphone, or daydreaming about something, that they never look up and see me aiming my camera in their direction.
I've also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting -- literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I've learned to keep my camera switched on, and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture ... after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it's pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject. Indeed, some of my most interesting photos have been so-called "hip shots," where I don't even bother to raise the camera up to my eye; I just keep the zoom lens set to the maximum wide-angle aperture, point in the general direction of the subject, and take several shots. As long as I can keep the shutter speed fairly high (which sometimes requires a fairly high ISO setting), I can usually get some fairly crisp shots -- even if the subject is walking in one direction, and I'm walking in the other direction, while I'm snapping the photos.
With only a few exceptions, I've generally avoided photographing bums, drunks, crazies, and homeless people. There are plenty of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don't want to be photographed, and I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of them. There have been a few opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. This is one example, and here is another example.
The other thing I've noticed, while carrying on this project for the past four years, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, far more people who are not so interesting. They're probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I've photographed ... unfortunately, there was just nothing memorable about them. They're all part of this big, crowded city; but for better or worse, there are an awful lot that you won't see in these Flickr sets of mine...
I remember a far away laugh a sweet caresse you'd help me zip up my dress.
& I remember your arms wrapped around my neck twenty one shells wrapped in a nest.
Endlessness. Didn't last.
I won't change given the chance.
I remember no place for me to hide. Before you came home at night.
& I remember you turnin' out the lights all i ever saw was the red in your eyes.
No big surprise. Happened nearly every night your own flesh & blood.
I did wonder why.
I remember not knowing what to say & how calm you had remained your child still born with no name.
I remember the never ending summer rain.
Please don't let what was get in the way of whats next.
Don't forget that whats to come hasn't come yet.

I am so in love with this song, it always reminds me of rainy days. We seem to be having a lot of them lately.
The Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) is a small, North American songbird, a passerine bird in the tit family Paridae. It is the state bird of both Maine and Massachusetts in the United States, and the provincial bird of New Brunswick in Canada. It is notable for its capacity to lower its body temperature during cold winter nights, its good spatial memory to relocate the caches where it stores food, and its boldness near humans (they can feed from the hand).

Sounds of the Black-Capped Chickadee
Shortcut: Chicka-dee-dee-dee-dee; fee-beee
Song: The song of the male is a clear two-note whistle that drops in pitch: fee-beee (the last note is often double-pulsed). Call: The familiar chicka-dee-dee-dee call, after which the species is named, is given during flocking and helps insure flock cohesion. A gargled tseedleedeet is given during agressive encounters. Other calls include a simple tsit (the contact note) and various outbursts of notes www.birdjam.com

I need perspective party time for the newly wed
I need perspective colours ran as the images bled
I need perspective like confetti on the flower bed
Don't trust my eyes priest crying he's got fire in his head

treat you like dirt, but I don't want to blame
Oh Gaia, the wind heats the fire and blows the ash away

Cultural Colors
Process statement: For this project I read about the color violet and mauve. Violet is associated with royalty and the French Queen liked to use purple colored fabric in her clothing. Mauve was discovered on accident by a young scientist trying to create an illness remedy. My concept question that I created was: What were Walt Disney's reason behind not using purple in any of the original Princesses clothing and why did he assign the princesses the colors they have today? I used images from google and photoshop along with a few filters to create my image.

"Une maison pour chacun"... C'est le titre de ce petit tableau de fin d'été, quand les fougères ont déjà fané mais que la température est encore douce et les feuilles aux arbres. L'architecture des bâtiments de cette ferme est assez typique du Ceredigion, voire du pays de Galles en général, et que l'on retrouve aussi en Bretagne, avec les murs blanchis à la chaux, peu d'ouvertures et généralement petites, le "tŷ pair", petit bâtiment pour préparer la bouillie des cochons, etc.

Composizione con il mitico bicchierone della coca-cola....Pensando alla splendida canzone di Mika-I see you
I'm standing across from you
And dreaming of the things I do
I don't speak, you don't know me at all
For fear of what you might do
I say nothing but stare at you
And I'm dreaming
I'm trippin' over you
Truth be told
My problems solved
You mean the world to be but you'll never know
You could be cruel to me
While we're risking the way that I see you
That I see you (3x)
That I see
Conversations
Not me at all
I'm hesitating
Only to fall
And I'm waiting, I'm hating everyone
Could it be you fell for me?
And any possible similarity
If its all, how would I know?
You never knew me at all but I see you
But I see you (4x)
I'm standing across from you (But I see you)
I've dreamt alone, now the dreams won't do (But I see you)
I'm standing across from you (But I see you)
I've dreamt alone, now the dreams won't do (But I see you)
Truth be told, my problem solved
You mean the world to me
But you'll never know

While we're risking the way that I see you

Sto dall'altra parte rispetto a te
E sogno le cose che faccio
Non parlo, non mi conosci affatto
Per timore di quel che potresti fare
Non dico niente ma ti fisso
E sto sognando
Sto inciampando su di te
La verità deve essere detta
I miei problemi risolti
Conversazioni
Io per niente
Sto esitando
Cadere soltanto
E sto aspettando, sto odiando tutti
Sto dall'altra parte rispetto a te (Ma ti vedo)

To prevent prisoner escapes, the SS surrounded the camp with a double row of electrified barbed wire fencing. There were cases in which desperate prisoners, unable to bear the camp terror, chose to throw themselves "on the wire"--the term used in the camp jargon to describe suicide by electrocution on the electrified fence. The total length of the fence was 1.2 miles at the Auschwitz I main camp and 7.4 miles at Auschwitz II-Birkenau.

"La mia vagina era il mio villaggio. La mia vagina era verde, campi d'acqua rosa tenero, mucca che muggisce sole che si posa dolce ragazzo che tocca leggero con un morbido filo di paglia bionda.
C'è qualcosa tra le mie gambe. Non so cos'è. Non so dov'è.

This is totally old..
I posted it a while back in the comments of another photo, but I feel like it needed some love considering I like it a lot.
I've been playing my guitar more and more lately. I've been writing this new song and the only thing missing is LYRICS! I am terrible at putting lyrics to my guitar, which sucks because I reaaallly like the melody. Eh, maybe I need somethings interesting to write about. Maybe I'm not sad enough. Happy songs? PSsssHhhhh who writes happy songs??!!!!!! haha, wow..
ANYwho I'm going to New Jersey/New York City Friday! Yes, back home!!...Well until January 4th. Then, my boyfriend Chris is coming to NYC to watch the ball drop with me. That is if I don't get home early.. My point? I can't wait to take photos when I go! LIKE OMG! Do you have any idea how boring my town is? Even Raleigh which is considered a "city" is the most boring piece of shit place ever. Very uninteresting. But NOW I get some scenery I can't wait to get my hands on! I won't be uploading till I get some good shots from my visit there, so the next thing you see from me is some fabulous Jersey and NYC stuff. I I hope its fabulous. I can't wait to walk through Central Park (and not get murdered in the process) and eat a hot pretzel. Actually, most of New York City smells like piss and pretzels, but that's part of the experience! Thank you!!! finally! Some inspiration found ME!
Here I come NYC! and NJ!
See ya around flickr.
P.S:
I love you! hehe
Listen to me here!

I created this posters to show solidarity with the people of Palestine and in particular Gazans in their struggles under military occupation. The design was created to mark the one-year anniversary of the Israeli attack on Gaza for the Gaza Freedom March.
The International Coalition to End the Illegal Siege of Gaza formed after Israel's 22-day assault on Gaza in winter 2008-09.
To mark the one-year anniversary of the Israeli attack the coalition is mobilizing an international contingent for a nonviolent march alongside the people of Gaza on Jan. 1, 2010, in order to end the illegal blockade.
The coalition conceives this march as part of a broader strategy to end the Israeli occupation by targeting nonviolently its flagrant violations of international law from the house demolitions and settlements to the curfews and torture.

White Flag Deaths
(Jerusalem) - During Israel's recent Gaza offensive, Israeli soldiers unlawfully shot and killed 11 Palestinian civilians, including five women and four children, who were in groups waving white flags to convey their civilian status, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. The Israeli military should conduct thorough, credible investigations into these deaths to tackle the prevailing culture of impunity, Human Rights Watch said.
The 63-page report, "White Flag Deaths: Killings of Palestinian Civilians during Operation Cast Lead," is based on field investigations of seven incident sites in Gaza, including ballistic evidence found at the scene, medical records of victims, and lengthy interviews with multiple witnesses - at least three people separately for each incident.
"We spent seven to nine minutes waving the flags, and our faces were looking at them [the soldiers]," said the grandmother, who was shot twice. "And suddenly they opened fire and the girls fell to the ground."
“I want to understand whether I did something wrong to Israel to be punished like this.”
Please read the very detailed Human Rights Report on the White Flag Deaths:

Ler-më-ni juve kutime,
Gjakun për se m'a trazoni,
Të shkuarat t'jetës t'ime
Ç'kini ju të m'i kujtoni?
Ç'më kujtoni dashurinë?
Se për mua ësht'e vdekur,
Ajo që e ngre njerinë,
Ajo mua më ka djegur.
Ler-më-ni që të mbyll sytë
Të çlodh shpirtinë t'im,
Se për herënë të dytë
S'e shkonj atë hidhërim.
Sot të gjitha më çpëlqejnë,
Se nga kthehesh e vështron,
Dashurinë t'a çkëmbejnë,
Kur të lumtur veten shkon.
