Craig Goch, the highest upstream of the series of dams in the Elan Valley, is often referred to as the 'top dam'. It is located at a height of 1040 feet (317m) above sea level. As with all the dams, work started with the arrival of the railway line at the site. In the case of the top dam the line had the farthest to go and a rocky outcrop had to be blasted and dug through on the route to the site. Work on excavating the foundations for a secure base for the structure started in July 1897, some three years after the start of work on the lowest dam at Caban Coch.
These are the two highest points of elevation in the Rocky Mountain Range of North America. Mt Elbert (left) at 14,440" and Mt Massive (right) at 14,433'.
These two mountains are not the tallest from their base, not even close. Many people do not realize how high in elevation Colorado is in general. The lowest point in the state is still 3315' above sea level located east along the Colorado-Kansas State line.
The mountain ranges of Colorado all rise from a high elevation base.

My last lighthouse shot got quite a bit of buzz so I decided to shoot another, this time, at Discovery Park in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle. I was on my way home from work one night last week and noticed that the cloud conditions were shaping up for what might be a really great sunset. I’d been wanting to shoot the lighthouse in Discovery Park for some time now, so I pulled the trigger. Having never been there, I had no idea where to park and since you can’t actually see the lighthouse from the road, picked the first spot I found. Lucky me, I don’t think it is actually possible to park any further away. But hey, the weather was great... Just had to lug my gear... Oh, and I had on my work dress shoes, which made for a fun walk... and sore feet! Oh the things we photogs sacrifice to get the "shot". Well after about 40 minutes of walking, I reached the lighthouse and was blown away. Beautiful beach grass everywhere, tons of amazing driftwood, and the snow capped Olympic Mountains in the background. I played around with several different shots and ultimately decided on this angle as it had the best balance between sky, rocks, driftwood, lighthouse and the colorful reflection of the setting sun. Just as the sun was going down, a ton of birds began to fly overhead as if they knew it was photo time. One even had his “landing gear” down which I thought was cool. Perhaps they were expecting crumbs... doh, maybe next time!
You'll have to view the larger version to see which bird had the landing gear :)

A dream day on the highest peak in Germany – even without skis or snowboard.
At almost 3,000 metres (10,000 ft), the Zugspitze is Germany's highest mountain. It offers an experience which nobody can easily forget. Whether you are a nature lover, sun worshipper, skier or hiker, there is something here for everybody.

Gaustatoppen is the highest mountain in the county Vestfold og Telemark in Norway which lies in the municipality Tinn and Hjartdal. The view from the summit is impressive, as one can see an area of approximately 60,000 km², one sixth of Norway's mainland. The mountain is popular for downhill skiing in winter, and competitions have been held on its slopes. These competitions include the "Norseman triathlon", billed as "the world's most brutal iron-distance triathlon". It starts in Eidfjord and finishes at the top of Gaustatoppen. The summit is accessible on foot in the summer, on a rocky pathway of medium difficulty, although the southern side of the mountain is very dangerous and inaccessible. The wreckage of an airplane crash lies there, as it is too difficult to remove it.
Every year, more than 120,000 people climb the mountain, which with its characteristic white-striped, elongated ridge is visible from large areas in southern Norway. The easy accessibility from central parts of Eastern Norway also contributes to making the summit a popular hiking destination.

This is a photo of the downtown Seattle public library. Built by Rem Koolhass, this piece of modern architectural art is as amazing on the inside as it is outside. This structure has been shot a ton so I really tried to give it something I hadn’t seen before. Out of all my shots that day, this one “popped” most for me. I brought out my wide angle lens (14mm full frame) and got really low to the ground for this shot. Standing on the corner, I could just barely squeeze in the entire structure. I waited for the sun to peek through the buildings downtown and captured the reflection on the side of the building, which I felt added to the dramatic nature of the structure. As you can see, there is a bit of lens flare, but I actually liked it this time. If you follow the flare trail, you can see it reflected all the way to the street sign on the left, which is ultimately why I decided to keep the street pole in. I really liked all the angles in this shot!
If you like this kind of funky perspective, here's another one of the Seattle Center.
Manebhanjan is a small town in the vicinity of Darjeeling, frequented by adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers. It is the base for the popular Sandakphu Trek. The famous Rhododendron trek and the Himalayan Run & Trek are also organized from here. There is a short trekking route to reach the town as well.
The name “manebhanjan” translates as “the junction of Stupas” in Nepali language. The Singalila National park is located nearby and sees a lot of visitors. Tourists can embark on an interesting wildlife safari through the park. The Singalila Ridge is the highest point in West Bengal. The hills are a part of the Lesser Himalayas. The surrounding forest ecosystem is beautiful.

Photoshop
- Added 1 layer mask effect of 'curves' to increase the contrast
- Added 1 layer mask effect of 'saturation' (reds) to decrease the tone of the lighthouse
- Added 1 layer mask effects of 'saturation' (blues) to slightly decrease the tone of the sky
- Applied blending from a 0 EV tonemapped hdr to correct movement of the flags

Did a night shoot with Adam Bender www.flickr.com/photos/adambender/. This was the last stop of the night. We had never seen a night image of ontario's last covered bridge. (The Kissing Bridge). This is the first time i have had a chance in months to go out and shoot something i really enjoy. It was a great night. the weather was beautiful for the first time in a long time. it was so quiet. all we could hear were the sounds of the animals. Thought we might see the headless horseman come riding through, but no luck. lol
*This is the last covered bridge in Ontario and was built in 1881.

As viewed from the west southwest at a distance of approximately 32 miles away. At 11,249 ft, it is Oregon's highest mountain peak. This was taken at Milo Mc Iver State Park which is very near the town of Estacada. I posted a photo I took from this same viewpoint about a month ago. That photo had some clouds partially blocking the mountain. However, on this visit, it was visible in all it's glory. :) (DSC_4561)

Whiteface Mountain is the fifth-highest mountain in the U.S. state of New York, and one of the High Peaks of the Adirondack Mountains. Set apart from most of the other High Peaks, the summit offers a 360-degree view of the Adirondacks and clear-day glimpses of Vermont and even Canada, where the skyscrapers of Montreal, 80 miles (130 km) away, can be seen on a very clear day. Located in the town of Wilmington, about 13 miles (21 km) from Lake Placid, the mountain's east slope is home to a major ski area which hosted the alpine skiing competitions of the 1980 Winter Olympics. Unique among the High Peaks, Whiteface features a developed summit and seasonal accessibility by motor vehicle. Whiteface Memorial Highway reaches a parking area at an elevation of 4,600 feet (1,400 m), with the remaining 267 feet (81 m) being obtained by tunnel and elevator. 109

Well I could not pass up uploading another shot of the fireworks from the Space Needle on New Year's night. Here is the one I posted yesterday: www.flickr.com/photos/fresnatic/8333724451/in/photostream... Happy New Year to everyone! I thought this was a unique fireworks display as the "Saucer" of the Space Needle seems to be dripping! Then the two different colors of fireworks and their direction sort of look like some tropical flower or a delicate crown! Okay, maybe I am crazy, but that is kind of what I see!
This is a single RAW image processed in Camera Raw. I then adjusted the clarity, some sharpening and noise removal as well. One of my favorite aspects here is all of the star bursts of the lights created by the small aperture I used when shooting! This was definitely intentional! The only problem I ran into was that I needed to drop back my ISO towards the finale as the amount of fireworks wound up causing my later images to be slightly overexposed! Oh well, live and learn.
Thank you for the tremendous response to my first fireworks shot which hit Explore yesterday at #9! Wow! I don't ever think I have had over 1,900 views of an image in one day! Once again, Happy New Year to all of my great Flickr contacts. I know I have had a lot of people whom have added me as a contact in the past several days. Thank you. It is extremely hard to view everyone's streams, so thank you for your understanding.

This is a B/W photograph of Hēmerovigli (aka Imerovigli, Ἡμεροβίγλι), the highest settlement or village on Santorini (aka Thēra, Θήρα) Island, Greece, at a 1,181 ft (360 m) altitude. The Orthodox Christian Church of the Resurrection (“Anastasis”) of the Lord is viewed with its blue dome.
The architecture of the volcanic island is of course Cycladic yet it has a distinctive style of its own. One enjoys the awe-inspiring beauty of the whitewashed houses atop the sheer cliffs and in proximity to Skaros, the dark and enormous rock formation, on the north of the island’s largest town, Fira (aka Phēra, Φηρά). The shot was taken in late October.

St George's Hall
In 1969 the architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner expressed his opinion that it is one of the finest neo-Grecian buildings in the world.
St George's Hall stands 169ft long and 74ft wide with a tunnel vaulted ceiling – the largest of its kind in Europe. The ceiling is supported on massive red granite columns, with figures portraying qualities Victorian Liverpool aspired to – art, science, fortitude and justice.
The Hall houses a priceless Minton mosaic tiled floor of 30,000 tiles. When the unique floor was uncovered, in 1954, to mark the Hall's centenary, more than 100,000 people queued to see it.
The Hall is also home to a concert organ second only in size to the organ in the Albert Hall.
In 2004 the hall and its surrounding area were recognised as part of Liverpool's World Heritage Site.

Queen Victoria
(1819–1901)
by Thomas Thornycroft, 1869
Bronze on a granite pedestal.
This striking sculpture of the young Queen Victoria riding side-saddle was commissioned to match the one of Prince Albert already completed by Thornycroft and unveiled in 1866. The Queen's hat is generously plumed, and, appropriately for this position outside St George's Hall, she bears the St. George's riband as a sash across her breast.
In a description from the Art Journal, the horse is seen as "full of impatient action, which tells on the sway of the figure; an effect difficult to express well in sculpture."
The Queen holds what looks like a small sceptre, but is actually the handle of a riding crop, the rest of which has been lost. The drape of her voluminous skirt can be seen in the right-hand profile.
The companion piece, towards the other end of St George’s Steps, is the equestrian statue of Prince Albert.
