There was sun on the foreground and a storm on the horizon. I liked the contrast. I'm not completely happy with the sky color -- it should be a little less blue. I also was trying to get a deeper dof than I usually try for.

Line of sight distance from my location to the mountain is appx 38 miles. At 11,250 ft, it's Oregon's highest point. And being about 60 miles from Portland, (Oregon's largest city), it's sees a lot of use. This shot is taken not far from where I live. (Mount Hood Shots DSC_5940.jpg)

This is the Figurehead of the replica ship Freedom Schooner Amistad

La Amistad (Spanish: "Friendship") was a 19th-century two-masted schooner built in the United States but owned by a Spaniard living in Cuba. The ship was notable as the scene of a revolt by African captives being transported from Havana. When they took control of the ship in July 1839 and were later captured by the US Navy, La Amistad became a symbol in the movement to abolish slavery. The ship was taken under control by the United States, resulting in a legal battle over the status of the Africans, as importation of slaves into the US had been prohibited since 1808.

On July 2, 1839, Sengbe Pieh led fellow 53 Africans (49 adults and 4 children), captives being transported aboard La Amistad from Havana, in a revolt against their captors. After gaining control of the ship, the Africans demanded to be returned home, but the ship’s navigator deceived them about the course and sailed north along the North American coast to Long Island, New York.

The schooner was taken into custody by the United States Navy and the Africans were taken to Connecticut to be sold as slaves. There ensued a widely publicized court case in New Haven, CT about the ship and the legal status of the African captives. At that time the transport of slaves from Africa to the Americas was illegal, so the ship owners fraudulently described the Africans as having been born in Cuba. The court had to decide if the Africans were to be considered salvage and the property of Naval officers who had taken custody of the ship, whether they were the property of the Cuban buyers, or of Spain as the Queen of Spain claimed, or lastly, if the circumstances of their capture and transportation meant they were free. The issues became the focus of the Amistad case, which figured prominently in abolitionism in the United States. In America, the African leader Sengbe Pieh became known as Joseph Cinqué. The Supreme Court ruled the Africans had been illegally held, and the United States arranged for them to be returned to Africa, as they wished.

Freedom Schooner Amistad set sail on June 21, 2007, from New Haven on the "Atlantic Freedom Tour", a 14,000-mile (23,000 km) transatlantic voyage

The highest mountain in the Oregon Coast Range. On this day, you could see Mt Rainier and all the way down to Mt Thielsen, as well as the ocean. A friend and I cross country skied to the top. About 13 miles round trip and 2000+ ft. elevation gain.

the highest point on the Isle of Man.

There are wide-ranging views over the Island and across the Irish Sea to the coastlines of neighbouring countries. There is a well-known saying in the Isle of Man that on a clear day

you can see seven kingdoms: Mann, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England, and rather more fancifully, Neptune and Heaven.

For the record, the modern day countries are quite close:

* 31 miles (50 km) to the Mull of Galloway (Scotland)

* 51 miles (82 km) to Scafell (England)

* 66 miles (106 km) to the Mountains of Mourne (Northern Ireland)

* 85 miles (137 km) to Liverpool (England)

* 97 miles (156 km) to Dublin (Republic of Ireland)

Well I finally got a Lenticular Cloud near Mt Rainier! Actually, this cloud was forming to the east of the mountain, but since I am on the west side shooting east, the cloud looks to be forming right above the mountain! I saw this driving from my house in Issaquah. I left around 4:00pm to get to the mountain. "Plenty of Time, " I thought. Heck no, traffic was a nightmare! It normally takes me about two hours to get to Mt Rainier from where I live, and where I had to stop, I was still an hour away!

Oh well, I needed to make the best of the spot I found. The location is actually "Dogwood Park," just north of the town of Eatonville. The park is located just off the side of the road next to this fantastic pasture and this spot totally worked for me! I wish I could have arrived about ten minutes sooner, as the mountain was really lighting up!

I returned to this location around midnight, as I had proceeded to Mt Rainier only to be turned around by a Park Ranger. They do not allow people inside the park due to potential avalanche danger. Well then, change of plans. I decided to set up shop above a little creek outside of the Longmire Lodge and shoot a time lapse video of the moon rise!

So After a while, I then returned to "Dogwood Park" and this great vantage point! I shot a cool time lapse of the swirling clouds and rotating stars by moonlight! I also captured the feeding habits of the horses in the pasture! I will post those later. I want you to be able to enjoy this!

This is a combination of three exposures (-2,0,+2) merged and tonemapped in Photomatix. I tightened the crop in Photoshop as well as ran through Topaz Adjust to bring back some detail. Highlight adjustments, noise reduction and slight added vignette added in Lightroom.

Thank you for your views, comments, and faves. I really appreciate them. I am starting to slow down a bit so that I can spend a little more time immersed inside your photostreams!

Okay...I will wait as my Flickr friends pick themselves up off the ground! I know...another post! I have not been out shooting much this Summer because I have been so busy at work and...uh...well the skies have been too clear for me to get anything exciting! That is...until I found this great website(that one of my friends hooked me up with) that shows the Aurora Borealis activity (website: www.softservenews.com/Aurora.htm )

I have always wanted to see and capture the Northern Lights and I live at a latitude which can sometimes afford us a glimpse. The Seattle area is far enough north which does allow us to see it's southern reaches. What is amazing here is that I am essentially in the middle of the city and I could capture one of Mother Nature's most beautiful sights!

This is a single RAW image which I processed in Photoshop RAW. The exposure is around 4 minutes long and I shot at a smaller aperture, than I normally would shoot stars with. I shot at the smaller aperture so the light from the lighthouse would create a little bit of a star burst effect. I also "Light Painted" the grass in the foreground and the sides of the lighthouse with my headlamp for about 8 seconds. I shot this at 1600ISO, so you can imagine the ton of noise I got, so I ran through Topaz DeNoise. When that did not get it all, I went down to three pixels and cloned out the specks of noise...Yes that was tedious but worth it.

Once again, thank you to all of my Flickr friends for your support, views, comments and faves. I really appreciate them!

Please do not use my images on blogs or websites without my permission. I own the copyright on all RAW and final processed images. All images are available for license through either Getty Images or for sale or license through my website and direct inquiry. Thank you.

Risin og Kellingin (Risin and Kellingin) are two sea stacks just off the northern coast of the island of Eysturoy in the Faroe Islands close to the town of Eiði. The name Risin og Kellingin means The Giant and the Witch (or Hag) and relates to an old legend about their origins. The Giant (Risin) is the 71m stack further from the coast, and the witch (Kellingin) is the 68m pointed stack nearer land, standing with her legs apart.

A legend tells how, once upon a time, the giants in Iceland were envious and decided that they wanted the Faroes. So the giant and the witch (his wife in some versions of the story) were sent down to the Faroe Islands to bring them back.

They reached the north-westernmost mountain Eiðiskollur, and the giant stayed in the sea while the witch climbed up the mountain with a heavy rope to tie the islands together so that she could push them onto the giant's back. However, when she attached the rope to the mountain and pulled, the northern part of the mountain split. Further attempts were also unsuccessful, and they struggled through the night, but the base of the mountain was firm and they could not move it.

If the sun shines on a giant or witch, it turns to stone. So it was that as they continued to struggle they didn't notice time passing, and as dawn broke a shaft of sunlight put a stop to their efforts by turning them to stone on the spot. They have stood there ever since, staring longingly across the ocean towards Iceland.

To climb Germany’s highest mountain - the Zugspitze (2,962 metres above sea lever) - on one day, we had to get up early. We left Ulm, where my brother lives, at 6 a.m. in the morning and arrived in Ehrwald, Austria two hours later to start our ascent from there. Our plan was to arrive at the top no later than 4 p.m. to be able to catch the last cable car downwards. That way we had 7 hours for climbing and 1 hour for lunch in between. In fact we made it to the top much quicker and reached the summit before 3 p.m. The weather was a bit too hot for climbing but perfect for making pictures - and the view along the way was just terrific.
