Aeronauticum, Nordholz (2015) - Germany

Intresting model of the carrier - Graf Zepplin with a compliment of Bf-109's and Ju-87 Stuka's on board.

Would be intresting te see a Bf-109 landing on a carrier with its delicate landing gear design.

The Graf Zeppelin was the lead ship in a class of two aircraft carriers for the German WW-II Kriegsmarine.

In the end it is the only aircraft carrier launched by Germany.

The complement of aircraft would be 42 fighters and dive bombers.

Construction on Graf Zeppelin began on 28 December 1936 in Kiel. Named in honor of Graf (Count) Ferdinand von Zeppelin.

The ship was launched on 8 December 1938, and was 85% complete by the outbreak of World War II in September 1939.

Graf Zeppelin was not completed and was never operational due to shifting construction priorities necessitated by the war.

She remained in the Baltic for the duration of the war.

The ship was scuttled just outside Stettin in March 1945 by the German crew.

The Soviet Union raised the ship in March 1946.

The Graf Zeppelin was ultimately sunk in weapons tests north of Poland 17 months later.

I have long been an admirer of the work of Carl b. Graf and recently realised that there is not much information on his work online. So I thought I would put a set together as the start of a small archive of his work.

Zeppelins are a type of rigid airship pioneered by German Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin in the early 20th century, based in part on an earlier design by aviation pioneer David Schwarz. Due to the outstanding success of the Zeppelin design, the term zeppelin in casual use came to refer to all rigid dirigibles.

Zeppelin were used for passenger transport as well as for military purposes, operated by the Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-AG (DELAG). DELAG, the first commercial airline, served scheduled flights before World War I. After the outbreak of the war, the German military made extensive use of Zeppelins as bombers and scouts.

The German defeat halted the airship business temporarily, but under the guidance of Hugo Eckener, the successor of the deceased count, civilian Zeppelins experienced a renaissance in the 1920s. They reached their zenith in the 1930s, when the airships LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin and LZ 129 Hindenburg operated regular transatlantic flights between Germany and both North and South America. The Hindenburg disaster in 1937 triggered the fall of the "giants of the air", though other factors, including political issues, contributed to the demise of the Zeppelin. (Wikipedia)
