I have long been an admirer of the work of Carl b. Graf and recently realised that there is not much information on his work online. So I thought I would put a set together as the start of a small archive of his work.

With a rainy Good Friday predicted for Manchester we thought the omens sounded good for a spot of clean graffiti for the upcoming BL9 music weekender (in Bury FC's ground in June) so we got on a train and headed up north. We hadn't really done much with the reverse/clean graffiti technique before but are fairly well versed with using stencils so thought it would be pretty straightforward. We had a list of places to hit and were eager to get started. After sorting a man, a van and a power washer we were good to go.

I thought the main problems on the day would be finding somewhere to pull up by the road and filling up with water whereas it turns out that our biggest issue was, in fact, finding the correct kind of dirty pavement to work with. With a limited supply of water that took ages to fill we had to pick our spots carefully as wasting water and time was not really an option when we had a load of impressions to get done. Despite being soaked from head to toe by the end of the day we were all experts on the relative merits of different paving and how effectively the power washer would work. You live and learn...

Cheers

Not one of my photos but certainly one with some historical interest.

It shows the Graf Zeppelin photographed by my grandfather as it flew over their house in Hounslow on its way either to or from nearby Hanworth Air Park on 18th August 1931, one of only three visits it made to England.

Built in 1928 The Graf was the most famous and certainly the most successful airship ever built. In its ten year life it made 590 flights totaling over a million miles and carried 13,110 passengers. In August 1929 it circled the globe in 12 days stopping only at Tokyo, Los Angeles and Lakehurst and in 1931 it made the first-ever scheduled transatlantic flights (to South America), during which the photo was probably taken.

Two months prior to this photo the Graf had spent a week in the Arctic undertaking polar research.

The Graf Zeppelin was 236.53 m (776 ft 0 in) in length, the equivalent of approximately three Boeing 747’s and had a maximum speed of 128 km/h (80 mph).

In this case please do not download or use the photo without my express consent.
