Streaks of light appear at sunset above Haystack Mountain and the foothills of the Colorado Rockies. Boulder County, Colorado.

It was in these fields in the early 1800s that the Arapahoe Indians, led by Chief Niwot, made their winter home.

Longs Peak (Arapaho Neníisótoyóú’u) shines in the early morning light, as viewed across multiple ridges from Rabbit Mountain. The vertical rise from this vantage point is 8800'/ 2600 m, with the summit at 14,259'/ 4346 m.

The prominent face below the summit is called "The Diamond" due to its shape. The wall is over 1000'/ 300 m high, and slightly overhung. The Diamond is a popular climb for seasoned rock climbers, first ascended in 1960. The first recorded ascent of Longs Peak was by a party that included John Wesley Powell in 1868 when he was getting ready to survey the Colorado River basin.

I had hoped to catch the first light on the mountain (and neighboring Mount Meeker (l) and Mount Lady Washington (r), but a layer of clouds on the eastern horizon blocked the initial sunlight. However the songs of the birds that morning, including towhees, lark sparrows, meadowlarks, yellow-breasted chats, blue gray gnatcatchers, nighthawks, magpies, and mourning doves, made up for the missed first warm light. Not a bad way to start the day, though it required a 4:15 am departure from the house.
