Near the end of the Hālawa Ridge Trail I saw this patch of S. cyatheoides and a few other patches of the species. I do not recall noticing S. cyatheoides occurring on the Ko`olau summit ridge prior to seeing these plants. The species as a whole seems to be less common on O`ahu than it is on all of the other main Hawaiian Islands. As far as I can recall, plants of S. cyatheoides I have seen on O`ahu aside from these plants at the end of the Hālawa Ridge Trail have been in habitats considerably drier than the Ko`olau summit ridge. The photographed plants look different from other plants of S. cyatheoides I have seen on O`ahu. The plants are shorter, their stipes are shorter, and the plants possibly have fewer scales than typical S. cyatheoides plants.

Flamenco, in its strictest sense, is an art form based on the various folkloric music traditions of southern Spain, developed within the gitano subculture of the region of Andalusia, but also having a historical presence in Extremadura and Murcia. In a wider sense, it is a portmanteau term used to refer to a variety of both contemporary and traditional musical styles typical of southern Spain. Flamenco is closely associated to the gitanos of the Romani ethnicity who have contributed significantly to its origination and professionalization. However, its style is uniquely Andalusian and flamenco artists have historically included Spaniards of both gitano and non-gitano heritage.

The oldest record of flamenco music dates to 1774 in the book Las Cartas Marruecas by José Cadalso. The development of flamenco over the past two centuries is well documented: "the theatre movement of sainetes (one-act plays) and tonadillas, popular song books and song sheets, customs, studies of dances, and toques, perfection, newspapers, graphic documents in paintings and engravings. ... in continuous evolution together with rhythm, the poetic stanzas, and the ambiance.”

On 16 November 2010, UNESCO declared flamenco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

S3 Racing by GMP Performance

The Audi S3 Racing Team returned to Road Atlanta for the 4th race of the 2011 NASA South East region in the GTS Challenge class. We were currently 2nd in the points standings and were competing in our Audi S3 trying to close the gap on the series points leader.

The weekend's racing was going to be exciting as participation levels were at a season high. Extra cars on grid meant that classes were divided. Typically, we are in the Thunder run-group, which consists of high-horsepower European cars, as well as the larger domestic and import cars.

Since this event had so many entrants, a "Blitz", German word for Lightning, class was formed and comprised of all German cars. The combined group had nearly 50 cars registered and ranged from Porsche 997's to Spec E30 BMW's.

Saturday morning practice was used to scrub in our new wider wheel and tire setup. BF Goodrich joined forces with us and provided a sticky set of R1 tires in 245x40x17 that we mounted onto our new 17x9.0 wheels, up from 17x7.5.

Saturday's qualifying session was brief and our car was mid-pack. The new wheel and tire setup proved to take a bit more getting used to as the increased grip changed the characteristics of the car.

The race on Saturday started and ran the duration incident free. Our S3 performed well but was sidelined with two laps to go due to a reoccurring coil-pack issue.

Sunday morning started with an early qualifying session which we were unable to make. However, the car and team were all set for the afternoon race and we lined the S3 up at the back of the grid. Unfortunately, the coil-pack issue plagued us again and were forced to retire with only one lap in the books.

Road Atlanta proves to be our nemesis this year but our sites are now focused on Round 5 at Charlotte Motor Speedway July 2nd and 3rd.

Our new BFG R1 tires and Performance Friction brakes are performing flawlessly and we are 100% confident that the coil pack gremlins have been resolved. We will have the S3 ready to go as we chase down the 2011 season points championship.

Lately I have been reading a lot about Daido Moriyama and some other photographers associated with him, and of course I've looked at many pictures. I have known Moriyama's work for a decade or two, but it seems only now these photos are starting to speak to me. Some things need time.

I find it fascinating how they work, and it’s interesting to read about the degree of awareness they had of what they were doing. They were really up to date theoretically and somehow worked with that. Well, possibly the 60s, 70s and still part of the 80s were a good time for this, when modernism turned to post-modernism and all kinds of stuff.

Maybe it’s anachronistic to mimic a style 60 years old. I mean, we all know that’s long gone for better or worse … but still, I tried.

Doing this has already taught me at least three things that are quite valuable:

1.

I consider myself an "advanced" photographer, after doing it for almost 40 years and basically doing nothing else for 25 years now. But in this field I am an absolute beginner. It’s humbling in a good way to see (and to feel) that I don’t know anything about this.

2.

It’s surprisingly hard to let go of the "conventional" photographic qualities most of us learned the hard way. Now it feels so strange to make blurry, underexposed, tilted photos. You really need to trick yourself to give up control.

3.

This kind of photography seems to be at least as much about "feeling the scene" as "seeing the scene". It’s hard to put in words that are not clichéd, but it’s more seeing with the imagination than with your eyes. It’s another way to approach previsualization, I guess – possibly quite useful for other genres, even if those pictures are not so great.

Barry originally was designed as a mouflon sheep mannikin for taxidermy. After talking to a few sculptors about the best way to approach him, they suggested this method. He came cut in half.
