Pulteney Bridge was built for William Pulteney, whose wife had inherited rural Bathwick across the river from Bath. Pulteney could see the potential for development, but first a ferry had to be replaced by a bridge. Pulteney Bridge was designed by Robert Adam in 1770 with the inspiration from the Ponte Vecchio in Florence.

The bridge has suffered so many changes that Adam would only recognise the south river front, yet it remains an architectural symbol of Bath.

Pulteney Bridge is one of only four in the world lined by shops on both sides.

The weir on the River Avon in front of the bridge was rebuilt in 1974 to enable pleasure craft to pass under the bridge and moor alongside the riverbank by the Recreation ground.

The Arlington Crossroads was formed from 1800s wagon roads that connected thriving riverfront Spanish plantations and landings along the St. Johns River with the Richard Mill dam over Strawberry Creek. These roads were tied together and platted when the plantations were sold after the Civil War. The resulting main north/south road was the “road to Chaseville” or Chaseville Road, which became University Boulevard in 1959. Arlington Road, the main east/west road was combined from several roads, including St. Johns Avenue And Elizabeth Street.

From the 1920s through the 40s development at the Crossroads grew steadily. Civic-minded citizens started a community club, public water works, and volunteer fire department, all located in the area of the Crossroads. Paul K. Reid’s Gas Station and Cliff’s Garage serviced the ever more popular automobile. Supplies and sundries could be purchased at Oliver Friske’s General Store. While the surrounding area was still very rural and much food was home-grown, groceries could be purchased from Rowe’s Grocery or Haine’s Grocery.

The opening of the Mathews Bridge I 1953 made the area easily accessible and attracted new businesses and new residents. Housing subdivisions and strip shopping centers would soon fill the area, but even with the opening of the Town and County and Arlington Plaza shopping centers during the 1950s, the Crossroads remained the business and social hub of a new larger Arlington. From the new post office on the northwest corner, businesses spread in all directions Turner Hardware, Sal’s Drug Store, The Clip Joint Barber Shop, Arlington Auto Parts, Chaz Harris’ Music Shop, to name a few. Old-timers and teenagers and those in between met under the beautiful oak tree by the post office to share the news of their families.

The arrival of enclosed mall shops and “super” market grocery stores lured shoppers elsewhere, and the Arlington crossroads as a small town center slowly blended into the community at large.

UNIQUE seminar on training trainers methodologies. March 2008, Berlin.

The garden here is really one that shows off the great variety of colors and forms for roses, but toward the end there is an extended court that offers other kinds of flowers aesthetically presented in shades that add to the general attraction.

The Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden in Colonial Park of Franklin Township, NJ, is such an amazingly beautiful site, with so much meticulous thought and care that went in to the planning and design. Although far beyond the peak season of May through early July, we decided to take a drive over after visiting Duke Farms (see our ALBUMS) during a late mid-August day.

We had been told about this lovely garden by a number of folks we had met over a week period earlier that month, and since the descriptions were consistently very appealing—based on peak season, in each case—we felt it would be worth the 6 or 7 miles from Duke Farms, for we had nothing to lose. Basically, we just wanted to get an idea as to the general layout of the place for future consideration. We were a bit skeptical in terms of expectations, having been spoiled by numerous visits to Longwood Gardens (see ALBUM for this site, too) in PA—perhaps the greatest garden in North America with its over 1,000 acres of spectacular displays.

Well, upon arriving later that day, we could instantly tell that this new garden would be special. From the parking area, once notices the elegant layout of the enclosed rose garden, and even at this time of year, it was evident from a distance that many roses were still quite nice. As we approached the gate, the roses still peaking were simply stunning. Granted, not Longwood Gardens in scale, but with a focus on roses, it is definitely first class, and we could easily see the incredible passion administered by the gardeners and horticulturists. Many of these roses were given official names, designated as unique species. Most fell under the families of Grandiflora and Floribunda Roses, and for the most part, my wife was very diligent about notating the exact names and families. I, on the other hand, was somewhat remiss in that several truly wonderful roses photographed toward the latter part of this visit were without detailed ID’s.

Anyhow, we can only imagine what the scenery might be during the peak blooms, and we definitely intend to return to experience it. For those residing in the New Jersey or Eastern PA regions, this is a “MUST SEE” place. And if roses are amongst your favorite flowers, you will be in awe.

A study of light and form.

Form was the theme for this picture. I know it's not exactly a form, but still the outlines of somekind of form :)

Zebra Swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus) Spring & Summer form comparison.

Shawnee State Forest, Ohio, USA.

June 7, 2012.

The inset photo, taken almost exactly one month before the main photo (in virtually the same location), helps to demonstrate the two distinct variations of the Zebra Swallowtail.

The Spring form shows more white and more red, while sporting shorter "tails" on his "tux". Both forms are absolutely beautiful, but when you see the Summer form drift by with the (slightly) longer tails trailing behind... :-)

The massive form completely dominates what is essentially a small scale area of the City. Another bemehoth will soon join it, only adding to the intimidating scale here.

Although the glazing is impressive, there is little creativity in the overall outline and profile; However, meek indentations on the surfaces do help to break up the boxiness somewhat but it is basically a tired design that that has been around globally since the 1960s and 70s. I immediately think of Dallas!

While getting closer in our dom/sub bond, we showed our true selves to each other, furthering trust.
