The Jewish congregation formed in 1847 and that eventually would join the Reform movement and be called Rodef Shalom had a good problem: it kept growing larger.
After building several structures in the crowded streets of Allegheny City -- now Pittsburgh's North Side -- a new temple was to be constructed in the more wide-open spaces of the East End near Oakland, which was becoming the city’s cultural center.
Rodef Shalom turned to architect Henry Hornbostel, who created a Beaux Arts masterpiece for Western Pennsylvania’s oldest Jewish congregation. Employing yellow brick, with terra cotta pieces providing bursts of color and detail, the building has a 90-foot high squared dome that used the Guastavino vaulting system instead of steel.

A unique feature at Rodef Shalom, which opened in 1907, is the Biblical Botanical Garden that pairs biblical verses with plants native to the Holy Land.
Rodef Shalom Temple entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and is listed with the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation.

Foto-Buddies Project 52, Week#9: Elements of Design--Form
Poly is extra special because he's Mr. Sparks' Christmas gift to me. I hate that I can't play with him as much because the compatible film is not available in the Philippines and it's pretty expensive too. Last weekend, I tried using him only to find out that the film cartridge has expired. Now I only have one unexpired film cartridge left. :(

Students enrolled in the “Improvisational Forms” dance course at Wesleyan University performed May 6 and May 8 at various locations, and on objects, around campus. The class is designed to explore various approaches to dance improvisation. Students learn to expand movement vocabulary, increase compositional awareness, develop their creative thinking and observational skills, and sharpen their performance presence.The class is taught by Susan Lourie, adjunct professor of dance. Some of these were black like this and some were a greyish color. For margined blister beetle the bug guide Identification goes: "Occurs in 3 color forms, cinereous, margined and black; intermediates are known, check (1); enlarged palpi and the slender, rather filiform antennae separate funebris from cinerea, pensylvanica and other similar things." Being naturalist-challenged, I don't fully understand those words so any ID help or confirmation would be appreciated. The flower is whole-leaf rosinweed.

The newly formed Senior Wrestling League dual was between Aspull Warriors Wrestling Club and Manchester Y- CLUB. It was held at the Aspull Warriors Wrestling Club on Saturday 26th November 2022
The Y- CLUB gained the win!

This is part of the two pilot leagues which were launching in September 22.
This could be a huge step for the development of wrestling in this country. If successful with our pilot season this could lead to the launch of a nationwide league launching in every region of the UK by the end of 2023.

Form the viewpoint on the west side of Hospital Square can be seen the castle's Western Defences.The exposed,and hazardous,part of the castle is not open to visitors - an historic problem for in 1677 a report noted that the sentries on patrol found it impossible to go along it 'in a stormy night'.In King Charles II of Great Britain reign (1649-1685) a defensive wall was rebuilt and a walkway provided along the western edge of the rock for patrolling guards.It was at the sallyport (back gate) through this wall,on March 19,1689,that John Graham 1st Viscount Dundee the 7th Laird of Claverhouse conferred with the Governor George Gordon the 1st Duke of Gordon.After the meeting,'Bonnie Dundee' John Graham 1st Viscount Dundee the 7th Laird of Claverhouse rode north to raise a force to support King James VII of Great Britain and the Governor George Gordon 1st Duke of Gordon began his defence of the castle on behalf of the exiled monarch.Durring the 1717 siege,the Jacobites tried to breach the sallyport.This prompted Major General George Wade to propose that the Western Defences be redesiged.The work was carried out by Willian Adam,the famous architect,working in his capacity as a building contractor.The walls were designed for defence by musketeers.The uppermost terrace (immediately) below the viewpoint) was constructed in 1858.

This was by the road, and between the road and the cactus was a ditch and then a 5-foot wall of dirt. I stood on the road to take the picture, at about eye level with the cactus. The original photo had a bush on each side of the picture, but I didn't like them so I cloned the flowers and grass over them. I wanted the horizontal lines to be stronger with just the cactus interrupting them. I could have cropped off the dirt and rocks at the bottom, but I like it because it adds another horizontal line and another texture.

Ross Craig (1926-2012) was a local historian born in Stockton and dedicated much of his life promoting and conserving the history of Stockton, NSW. He possessed a wealth of knowledge about the suburb and was a founding member of the Stockton Historical Society and co-editor of its magazine. Pat Craig supported her husbandâs passion for history, and together they made a great contribution to the Stockton and Newcastle communities. We thank the Craig Family and Stockton Historical Society who have kindly given Cultural Collections at the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia, access to the collection and allowed us to publish the images. El complejo de edificios que forman la Villa del Casale es el descubrimiento arqueoógico más importante de la Sicilia Romana. La lujosa vila de campo que se cree perteneció a la familia imperial de Masimiliano Ercúleo, está situada en el fértil valle del río Gela y fue construida entre finales del siglo III y primeros años del siglo IV dC en el centro de un latifundio rural.De acuerdo con Vinicio Gentili, al que se debe su descubrimiento arqueoógico, el mayor esplendor de la villa fueron los siglos IV y V dC. El latifundio estaba formado por una aldea rural, "mansiones" y cortijos donde los eclavos y "procuratores" labraban la tierra. El gran interéa que suscita la visita de la villa es debido fundamentalmente a los mosaicos que cubren los suelos de todas las habitaciones, galerías y termas y que constituyen un conjunto de singular beleza.
El mosaico de mayor interés es el que recubre el pasillo cubierto llamado "de la caza mayor", con detalles que ilustran las distintas fases de la captura, transporte y muerte de los animales en un escenario puramente africano.
Otro mosaicos de interés es el de la caza menor, en el que ademá de representarse diversas escenas de caza menor se representa en el centro una escena de sacrificio ritual a la diosa de la Caza Artemisa o Diana.
Otros mosaicos interesantes son el del "cubiculum de la escena erótica";el de la sala de "las diez jóvenes hijas", en el que diez doncellas estan representadas vistiendo bikinis en elmomento de realizar ejercicios gimnásticos o de recibir premios.

This photo was taken at the foot of the Alborz mountains. Seconds after taking this shot - a kid came by and broke the icycles off to suck on. DAMN!
These tin roofed farmhouses form a large part of my memory of the Irish countryside. There were a huge amount of them around in my childhood, not so many of them now in the second decade of the 21st century. Of course corrugated roofs would have been much cheaper than slate and must have been much easier to manage than thatch so I wonder if they represent a transition from the traditional thatch to modern slate ones. Back then I didn’t concern myself with these socio-economic questions I just wondered how they could hear themselves above the sound of a heavy Irish rain beating down on their iron roof. Maybe they used sign language.
Either way, in the last 30 years or so the owners felt it wiser to move into a brand new house next door, making sure it looked like it came straight out of 'Bungalow Bliss' a book of ideas and designs for the amateur self-builder from the 1970’s. As is now typical of so many houses out here in the boonies they just look like a copy and paste from this book of anondyne architecture, bland, boring and totally lacking in aesthetics.
In fairness It doesn't look like the corrugated roof was the issue for them. Like most houses up until the 60's or so, foundations were rare, with walls placed straight down on compacted earth. The two big cracks on the right and the one on the left are testament to that. An inbuilt flaw that took decades to come to fruition, leaving a little Titanic out here in the heart of the boglands of Ireland.
