It's called fasciation, also known as cresting, the odd condition exhibited by this cherry tomato. The explanations that I found on the Web were long and complex. But what’s most interesting, I think, is that it's apparently not two tomatoes joined together, but rather a single tomato--about 1.5 inches wide--that simply mutated and grew this way, if I understand it correctly.

We grew it on our backyard deck. I’ve applied some painterly processing for added interest, and I’m submitting it for this week’s Looking Close On Fridays theme: “Vegetables”

In case you’re wondering, as I was, “Tomatoes are fruits that are considered vegetables by nutritionists,” according to Brittanica.com. And that’s good enough for me. :-)

This orchid was a given to us on our golden wedding anniversary last year and it has bloomed well again this year albeit slightly late for our fifty first aniversary.

I bought some flowers at the nursery to play around with. This is an unknown rose surrounded by sea holly, seen in an 60-frame focus stack. I used Helicon Focus to blend the images.

I spent a while photographing some mushrooms on a fallen pine before noticing this young Water Moccasin (aka Cottonmouth, Agkistrodon piscivorus) just a few feet away, on the other side of the log. Juvenile cottonmouths have stunning markings around their mouth, and I loved how this one seemed to be guarding the mushroom, so I spent a while trying (very carefully) to get this shot. Five image stack.

Finally i took another image without flashes. I used this image to darken the foreground.

For Macro Monday's "Every Day Carry" Theme. There have been very few days in my adult life that I did not have one of these in my pocket. Most of those days spent without were on an airplane. Somewhere in the Shanghai airport I ditched one in a potted plant when I forgot to put it in my checked luggage!

The pocket lint was left for authenticity.

This is a nine image HDR focus stack, all handheld, processed in Photomatix for HDR and Photoshop for RAW and stack processing.

Two 1/18th scale die-cast model Cobras - any colour will do, black or white! Both original full size cars have big rumbling V8s. The black one is the original AC Cobra with the smaller engine, and the white one is the Shelby Cobra with what I believe was a 427 cubic inch V8.

As scale models go, both of these are very nice quality models. The white one is made by Solido, and the black one by Norev. Both are at the good value end of the market but have great details.

A 10 image focus stack processed in the Canon R10.

A severed fly head that I found just sitting on a leaf at Lake Waterford Park in Maryland. I've found some bizarre stuff in the years that I've been doing macro photography and this will rank near the top. I'm guessing that the fly was the victim of some type of wasp.

A focus stacking attempt

These tiny orange spheres reminded me of scoops of orange colored ice cream, so I added a leafy garnish for presentation.

Details:

Lycogala epidendrum, (wolf's milk or Groening's slime) forms small clusters of textured orange spheres that ooze orange slime when punctured.

White balance used the tiny gray cups as reference.

A single focus (not stacked) image was also prepared, minimizing the tiny gray cup fungi. Contrast and color enhancement with Topaz Restyle (reef at night preset, 40% normal blending mode).

The annual Swamp Sunflower bloom is starting here in Central Florida and looks like it's going to be good this year. I’d guess it’s still a week or two from peaking.

Focus stacked shot of a Columbine bloom

Just doing something different makes you think in other ways, how to shoot Spring Blossom on a windy day with rain coming down, just because it is raining does not mean photography stops.

I shot this against my monitor and a photo of the sky I had shot previously.

I then did an eleven shot focus stack carefully choosing my focus points to pick out various elements, I`m not entirely happy with it the Petals are a little bright for my liking but for now i`ll go with it until I find another subject.

I have recently been attempting to focus stack flowers to capture all the details. Nature is so beautiful and we really don't appreciate how intricate some things are.

I am currently using a manual focus rail and this image consists of 72 images stacked using a 30 days trial of the Helicon Focus 8 software.

An unusual longhorn beetle combining hairy-matted and shiny patches (ca 21mm long, Acronia sp. or Mimacronia sp., Cerambycidae, collection specimen, Phillipines, Mindanao).

Studio work with a prepared and staged specimen. Focus stack, 159 images, assembled in Zerene Stacker (Dmap & Pmax). Sony A7RIII (APS-C mode) + Laowa 65mm f/2.8 2x ultra macro apo; ISO-50, f/11, 1/160s, 1 diffused flash.

For this shot I have merged 7 single images with Focus Stacking. The background was illuminated with a LED flashlight.

For the Macro-Challenge the recording was cropped accordingly.

This was a captive animal (at the time), which had been picked up nearby and laid here for photographic purposes, then allowed to be on its own afterwards.

Dawn in a foggy meadow with many small dragonflies soaked with dew. Arranging the 3 chasers to form a pleasing composition, I set about focus stacking the nearest insect with c.40 images at an open aperture to produce good bokeh. The second and third dragonflies were taken with 1 image each by focussing on the eyes. All images were stacked in one batch using Helicon Stacker with stacking aberrations removed in Photoshop.

A second version of the image was processed with the 2nd two dragonflies completely out of focus.

A large weevil (Liparus glabrirostris, 19mm, Coleoptera, Curculionidae), from Ischgl (Austria; collection specimen, preserved in ethanol since 12.07.1993).

Studio work with a dead specimen, it was rehydrated and staged. Focus stack, 100 images, assembled in Zerene Stacker (Pmax & Dmap). Sony A7Rm3 + FE 2.8/90mm Macro G OSS; ISO-50, f/3.5, 1/40, -1.7step, 1 diffused daylight led.
