Day 219 / 365 (#585)

105mm @ f/5.6, ISO200 1/100s + Speedlite @ 1/4

I am using a Nikon 10x objective on a Raynox DCR-150 "tube lens" to achieve 10:1 magnification. This setup has an image circle that covers a full frame sensor.

Tiny male midge suffering from a heavy dew (bug about 4mm long)Image is focus stacked from 3 shots.

The tiny subject measures only 2-inches long by 1-1/4 inch wide. I set it on a battery charger just to get it up to more comfortable height for shooting.

Single flower (7 mm) from a white clover blossom. 36 images taken with 50D and MP-E 65mm at ~2.5x using 0.12mm steps with a Cognisys StackShot and stacked in Zerene Stacker. Lit with MT-24EX @ 1/32 with diffusion gels.

First attempt at focus stacking, this small flower is about 20mm across and is a combination of 14 images taken while adjusting the focus to get a fuller DOF.

Taken at 3:1 and focus stacked from 3 pics Uncropped

The second of two I was working on just before my PC died; so now I'm caught up. This is an eight-image focus stack (not quite enough) but not an HDR. I used this to test the utility of "32 Float" on a single image. Useful!

An other focus stack of the spider that resides on my window sill. She's watching over a bunch of eggs. But where is dad? Is it true that spider women eat spider men? Scary...

This small spider was terrorising the springtails in my favourite spot. Shot at 2:1 and cropped- focus stacked from 3 shots. Spider body length about 3.5mm

Image focus stacked from 4 pics- these are white versions of blue bells. Shot at about 1:1

Sarcophaga spp. - difficult to identify these to species level. This is a three image focus stack. The left eyes isn't damaged, it's just a reflection of the end of the lens.

This week, I was in the botanical garden for taking pictures. I did this fucus stacking exposure with 27 images. Finally the results are good enough to share it with you. There are still some imperfect areas, but in total the result is okay.

The blossom is as large as a ping-pong ball. Shot was done with help of a Sumikron macro rail. 27 exposures blended into one image.

39 images taken with 50D and MP-E 65mm at 5x using 0.06mm steps with a Cognisys StackShot and stacked in Zerene Stacker. Lit with MT-24EX @ 1/32 with diffusion gels.

These images where created by fairly new method, called FOCUS-STACKING. Each image is basically a "stack" of couple dozen (or hundred) images photographed with different focal distance where all focused areas are combined into one image.

Experimenting with my new RF100mm F2.8 Macro lens. Focus Stack of 70 images but still not everything in focus so next time a smaller aperture and/or more images.

Purple salpiglossis stigma and anther. 25 images taken with 50D MP-E 65mm at 3x manually stepped with macro rail and stacked in Zerene Stacker. Lit with MT-24EX @ 1/8 with diffusion gels.

Well actually my bathroom, but whatever. Time for some more extreme macro. This little dude was about the size of my thumb nail.

Hardware: Canon EOS 7D, EF 180mm f3.5L Macro USM + EF 2x Mk III

Shot: ISO 100, 360mm, 0.6 Sec at f11, Flash disabled, Tripod, 28 focus stacked images

Post: Helicon Remote (Beta), Helicon Focus, PhotoShop CS5 .. all on iMac

Day 292 / 365 (#658)

105mm @ f/4.0, ISO100 1/100s

This setup works pretty well at 2:1 or higher magnification. The light is not very diffused at less magnification because the subject is too far from the diffuers.
