The gear here is about 1.5 inch in diameter. It's an advertising piece that I picked up at a trade show years ago. It's from a company that provides systems for a process called injected metal assembly (IMA) that is designed to securely bind components of different materials together for assembly in manufacturing.
In case anyone is interested, the company says that IMA "provides permanent, reliable assemblies by injecting a small amount of molten zinc or lead alloy into and around components being joined. The molten metal cools and solidifies, accompanied by minute shrinkage that locks the injected metal onto the components."
Presumably, the process was used to join the gear to the shaft here.

focus stack of 12 shots

I tried focus stacking as my camera can do it. I chose 10 captures that were compiled in PS in post production. It’s about all I can do with PS by the way, having watched a demo at the photo club.

Photographed for this week's Macro Mondays "Curves" theme, this tiny dinosaur deco is made of PLA plastic. That's a material that is frequently used for 3D printing, so I am pretty sure that's how it was made. In 3D printing, layers of material are laid down one on top of another by a computer-controlled machine, or “3D printer,” and then fused together. The layers are built up sequentially until the three-dimensional object is completed. So that would account for the layered look of those curves on little dino's head.

Spent some time in the mountains this summer working on astro photography with good friend Kenny Mullen. This is an exposure blend, focus stacked foreground, and the sky is a series of 15 shots, stacked in starry landscape stacker. (to eliminate noise)
A focusstack containing about 60 shots. A wonderfully formed growth.

There's a little green Aphid hiding in the wood behind the Fly in this photo. I didn't even notice it till I opened the photo on my computer. Photographed in Maryland.
I finally resolved focus stacking issues I had been encountering on my computer, so I'm going back and processing some of my pics from earlier in the summer. This is one of the Purple Fringeless Orchids from a trip to Bollinger County back in July.
I had just finished a small bowl of fruit for my dinnertime dessert, when I noticed an interesting shadow and light pattern created by the glass bowl and spoon. Given that Shadow(s) is one of the open challenges for the Our Daily Challenge group, I left the bowl right where it was and went to get my camera and tripod. Above is the resulting image. I'm not sure how successful I was in emphasizing the shadow, but I like the shot in any case.
