Ashford Beer Festival features various forms of rugby - youth, ladies, veterans. The centre piece of the 2008 Festival has so far been the veterans tournament. Ten teams contested the most keenly fought competion to date. The deserved winners of the main competition were Essex side Romford and Gidea Park who defeated Uzes from France, 17-3 in the final.

Group B

Vs Canterbury won 15-0 try scorers Dave Rockliffe, Craig White Conversions John Scotchmer 1 Penalty Scotchmer 1

Romford completely dominated the game from the kick off, an early penalty kick from Scotchmer settled any nerves and a typical mazy run including at least 3 side steps from Rockliffe led to him scoring the first try, Romford led by 8-0 at half time. A late 2nd half try from debutant Craig White and conversion from Scotchmer gave the score a more relalistic look given Romfords overall dominance.

Vs Gillingham Ancorians won 5-3 try scorer Craig White

Romford had their toughest test of the day against a very fired up Gillingham side. Early indiscipline meant that Romford had to soak up a lot of early pressure, fortunetely a well drilled defence held out well and only conceded a penalty kick during this period. From the restart Romford took the opportunity to turn Gillingham with probing kicks and put pressure on them in their own 22. From a resulting scrum Kevin Butler fed a flying Criag White for what turned out to be the winning score.

Vs Maidstone won 12-5 try scorers Paul McCarthy, Craig White Conversions John Scotchmer 1

This was a more disappointing performance from Romford who were feeling the pace of games in quick succession. The result was never in doubt as Maidstone did not get out of their own half during the first half and a 5 metre scrum led to a try follwing a powerful surge from debutant No8 Paul McCarthy which was converted. A 2nd half try from Craig White sealed the win although Maidstone never gave up and following good work and skilful handling from their pack led to a late consolation try.

Vs Medway won 12-0 try scorers Rocky Dellamano, Paul McCarthy Conversions John Scotchmer 1

Romford knew that a win against previously unbeaten Medway would result in them topping the group and reaching the final. A superb performance set up by the front row and the dominant scrum meant their would only be one winner. Great hands across the backs led to a try in the corner from American winger Dellamano, and a 2nd half score from the ever powerful No8 McCarthy which was converted sealed a comfortable win and a place in the final against the much heralded French visitors from Uzes.

Final

Vs Uzes (France) won 17-3 try scorers Dave Marshall, Paul McCarthy, Penalty try Conversions John Scotchmer 1

Romford hit the French side from the off and after a number of pick and drives from the dominant pack quick hands led to the first try in the corner from Dave Marshall, the try was unconverted. Indiscipline cost Romford dear from the kick off as it let the french side to make good ground and following constant infringements the French team decided to kick penalty to close the gap. This is where the Romford scrum took over, the front row of Jeff Woods, Kevin McAlpin and Ged McVeigh completely destroyed the French pack and with the french side struggling to get any ball it was no surprise when a fortunate ricochet led to Paul McCarthy strolling over untouched for Romfords 2nd try which was converted for a half time score of 12-3. The 2nd half was even more dominant performance and after a series of penalties conceded from scrums on their own line the referee was left with no option but to award a penalty try Scotchmer missing the easiest of conversions although the result was in no doubt and the score at the final whistle was a resounding 17-3 to Romford.

Romford played the whole tournament with 16 players which is a testament to the effort of the players on the day and only lost a total of 3 scrums all day regardless of put in.

The name Ranelagh applies to many geographical features. The stretch of road joining Sandford Road (which begins at the corner of Anna Villa) to Ranelagh Road (which begins at the railway bridge) is known as Ranelagh or Ranelagh Village. The whole surrounding area is also popularly known as Ranelagh, stretching from Charlemont Bridge on the Grand Canal at the northern end of Ranelagh Road down to the junction with Milltown Road at the southern end of Sandford Road, and from Leeson Street to the East towards Rathmines to the West. At the centre of Ranelagh is "Ranelagh Triangle", semi-officially "the Angle", which is the junction of Ranelagh Village and Charleston Road at Field's Terrace. Nearby restaurant "Tribeca" references these geographical features (i.e., Tri-angle Be-low Ca-nal). To the North of the Triangle is the "Hill Area" of Ranelagh, which was the scene of Lee Dunne's novel, "Goodbye to the Hill". Ranelagh contains many fine Victorian streets such as those surrounding Mount Pleasant Square.

The townlands of Ranelagh North and Ranelagh South are in the civil parish of St. Peter's and in the barony of Uppercross. They are bounded on the north by Harcourt Road and Adelaide Road, on the east by Sussex Road and an old irregular boundary from there to Chelmsford Road, on the south by Chelmsford Road, Ranelagh Village, Charleston Road, Oakley Road and Dunville Avenue, and on the west by Beechwood Park, Belgrave Square East, Mountpleasant Avenue Upper, Bessborough Parade, Rathmines Road Lower and Richmond Street South.

The area popularly known today as Ranelagh also includes parts of the adjoining townlands of Cullenswood, Sallymount and Milltown.

Photo taken features a member of the 12 Regiment Royal Artillery on top of his Stormer vehicle outside Blackpool tower. The Stormer took part in a flag raising event as part of Armed Forces Week and helped escort an Armed Forces Week flag to the Blackpool town hall.

Yesterday as part of Armed Forces Week Blackpool played host to a rather special Armed Forces Day flag which had been escorted from the Falkland Islands all the way to the Blackpool town hall via all three services.

The flag started out the day on board the American made Huey 509 helicopter flown by Phil Connolly. The Huey made numerous passes over the Blackpool shoreline, before hovering above an oncoming Royal National Lifeboat Institution craft piloted by Shaun Wright. Once the flag made it onto the RNLI craft, they then proceeded to beaching the boat and passing the flag onto it’s final leg of the journey where it was picked up by members of the 12 Regiment Royal Artillery who after stepping onto their Stormer vehicle, drove to the Blackpool town hall where the town Mayor raised the flag for all to see.

The event was all in aid of Armed Forces Week, seven days dedicated to raising awareness of our armed services. By the end of the event hundreds of Blackpool residents were watching in awe as the flag delicately made it’s way on shore.

This set features more photos of the Rinard Covered Bridge and some of the developing Fall colors around the bridge on our visit to it, our third covered bridge stop on 19 Oct 2024. Linda her sister Sue who was visiting with us and myself had a wonderful day visiting the four historic covered bridges on and near Ohio's scenic Route 26.

Rinard bridge seems to be as much a boat as it is a covered bridge. It was built in 1875 and spans the Little Muskingum River. it was destroyed by a flood in 1876. I guess it didn't float to well that time. It was rebuilt but was washed off of its stone piers by floods in 1913 and 1938. Both times it remained intact and was placed back onto its piers. Then in 2004 it was washed off of its piers again but remained in tact. Then before it could be put back in place another flood delivered by hurricane Ivan destroyed it. It was rebuilt again in 2006 using a majority of the original timbers.

THIS... is Doug DeMuro's Land Rover Defender... made with Lego!

It is a 1997 North American Spec Defender convertible in 8-wide Speed Champions style with opening doors, hood, rear door, and adjustable seats. Also included is a brick-built Doug DeMuro figure (accurate sizing next to the Defender) and his Border Collie, Noodle!

The Story: Three years ago, I posted a render of this MOC on Doug DeMuro's subreddit, and the post absolutely exploded. Doug himself saw my creation, and was enamored, so he posted the render to Twitter, and everybody else was fanatic about Lego Doug too! Then, after getting a pinch-worthy private message, I ordered the parts on BrickLink for two Defenders, two Dougs, and two Noodles, and mailed the other pair to Doug as a commission! You can see Doug's personal copy for yourself at the 13 minute point here: youtu.be/AAGI1TGcqIY?t=780

Now finally, you can make your very own Lego Defender, Doug, and Noodle! The high-quality instructions include various quirks and features of the build, like the interior's fire extinguisher, the meat cleaver mirrors, and wheel covers from the Speed Champions F40.

I've got another Doug car MOC soon, so stay tuned

Behold the Art Float for Social Change! Our unique parade float features Mother Earth and a circle of waving hands, spinning on a carousel of art pulled by the pataphysical dragon Quetzy. We presented the Art Float to thousands of participants at the colorful Fairfax Festival Parade on June 9, 2018. Photo by Fabrice Florin.

The Art Float was created by Fabrice Florin, Geo Monley and over a hundred volunteers at Tam Makers, with the gracious support of Good Earth, MVCAN, Pataphysical Studios, Tam High School and the Youth Poster Contest. Activists Greg Brockbank and the Freedom Singers stood on the float podium and led us into song with classics like ‘This Land is Your Land’. They took turns with local musicians Sheri Cooper and Clancy Bounds, who inspired us with their heartfelt songs for a better world. We hope to engage more people to participate in democracy -- and we invite you all to vote, speak up -- and be the change!

Thanks to all our friends and neighbors who made this project possible! We are particularly grateful to our wonderful event crew, including Derek Bacchus, Joey Burnett, Phyllis Florin and Marilyn Price, as well as videographer Kim Spencer, photographers Dana Dworin and Grace Severtson. For this event, we had the privilege of marching with like-minded partners: the Climate Action Coalition carried a large white crane held by members of 350Marin, Marin Clean Energy, Sustainable Fairfax, Drawdown Marin, Sierra Club Marin and Mamas on Fire. And peace activist Jes Richardson closed our procession with his GandhiMobile. Special thanks as well to Cynthia Briggs and the gracious organizers of the Fairfax Festival Parade.

We’ll present the Art Float again at the Fourth of July Parade in Corte Madera -- and throughout California in fall 2018, to help get out the vote for our next elections. Learn more here: www.tammakers.org/art-float/

Notable features

An eclectic Victorian composition. A very Anglo-Dutch version of the Queen Anne style with gaudily picturesque motifs. Two buildings of different style in combination.

History

The Melbourne City Building is a four-storey brick building designed by W.H. Ellerker and E.G. Kilburn in 1888 for the short lived City of Melbourne Building Society, chaired at one time by Alfred Deakin. The building has two facades, to Elizabeth Street and Little Collins Street and returns on a curved rather than a splayed corner. The design eclectically combines classical elements such as columns, pilasters, aedicules and Baroque-style pediments with a picturesque roofline of steeply pitched slate roofs, wrought iron decoration and massive chimneys. The building was originally served internally by an Otis hydraulic lift.

Made in the U.S.A. by Wallace Silversmiths since 1835.

Each piece features an intricate design and beautiful engravings.

There are areas that have been securely attached with epoxy.

As you can see from the pictures there is epoxy located on parts of the lids, handles, and legs. It is a common task for a silversmith or jeweler to properly secure pieces with silver solder. Most of the epoxy can be carefully removed without harming the silver set or durability if you decide to do so.

The approximate measurements are taken from the longest points.

The tray #294F measures 29" long with handles, 17-3/4" wide. Large Wallace sticker on bottom.

The Coffee pot #282 (engraved 441) measures 11-1/2" tall, 10-1/4" diameter.

The tea pot #281 (engraved 4) measures 10-1/4" tall, 9-3/4" diameter. Faded Wallace sticker on the bottom.

The creamer #284 measures 5-1/2" tall X 5" diameter. Small Wallace sticker on bottom.

The sugar #283 measures 6" tall with the lid X 6 3/4" diameter. This is a two-piece set including the lid.

Here's how we displayed this project in the hallway. One of the scolls with pictures above, an explanation in the middle surrounded by typed anchor chart of what we noticed about the book when we looked at it like this.

The evening features two group performances heavily rooted in ceremonial tradition. Accompanied by dancers, vocalists and celebrated musicians, Haitian Dance Group Rara Tou Limen brings to the stage a wide spectrum of diverse Haitian dance forms, from vibrant rituals of Vodou, the turbulent legacy of political struggle, to the celebratory and festive dances of Carnival. Aiga Group Dance brings to the stage music and dance from Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, Micronesia as well as the haka, a traditional genre of Māori dance.

Karlsruhe features a lot of old glas at some places. At least it did back then.
