Toffee licks his lips, not in anticipation of what he might catch at the

bird table, but after his lunch.

I don't think he has ever caught a bird in his life and wisely has never shown any interest in them as he knows they can fly and he can't.

Made it to day 13 before sharing a photo of Toffee, last year it was day 11. But what's the point of having a cat unless it features in your photo a day project?

A Great Egret peers over his pool.

I think this is the last unused image of one of Brisbane's "Tiny Doors". We'll have to go and seek out some new ones soon! This one was also in the city's Queen Street Mall (I think)!

This image features the Green Ibis (Mesembrinibis cayennensis), captured in Restrepo, Meta, Colombia. Known for its iridescent green and purple feathers, the ibis stands out beautifully against the vibrant backdrop of the lush Colombian environment. The bird was perched delicately on a tree branch, where its sleek silhouette contrasted against the soft light filtering through the canopy. The calm, tranquil atmosphere of the scene was a perfect match for capturing the bird’s elegant form and reflective plumage.

In terms of technique, I used a Canon R5 with a 800mm f/11 lens and a 1.4x extender to maintain the required reach while preserving image clarity. The f/16 aperture ensured that both the bird and its environment were in focus, while the ISO 1600 helped balance the low light of the forest. The resulting sharpness and depth allow the vibrant plumage and the bird’s intricate textures to come through vividly. Capturing such a shot in the wild, with the ibis being perfectly positioned, required patience, but the payoff was worth it.

The Norstedt Building (Swedish: Norstedtshuset) is the main office of P.A. Norstedt & Söner AB on Riddarholmen in Stockholm, Sweden.

Designed by Magnus Isæus the building was built in 1882–1891, and features a spire-like roof, which is a well-known silhouette on the skyline of central Stockholm.[1] The Vasabron Bridge passes in front of the building and Gamla Riksarkivet ("Old National Archive") lies south of it.

Riddarholmen Church (Swedish: Riddarholmskyrkan) is the church of the former medieval Greyfriars Monastery in Stockholm, Sweden. The church serves as the final resting place of most Swedish monarchs.

Riddarholmen Church is located on the island of Riddarholmen, close to the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Sweden. The congregation was dissolved in 1807 and today the church is used only for burial and commemorative purposes. Swedish monarchs from Gustavus Adolphus (d. 1632 AD) to Gustaf V (d. 1950) are entombed here (with only one exception: Queen Christina who is buried within St. Peter's Basilica in Rome), as well as the earlier monarchs Magnus III (d. 1290) and Charles VIII (d. 1470). It has been discontinued as a royal burial site in favor of the Royal Cemetery and today is run by departments of the Swedish Government and Royal Court.

It is one of the oldest buildings in Stockholm, parts of it dating to the late-13th century, when it was built as a greyfriars monastery. After the Protestant Reformation, the monastery was closed and the building became a Lutheran church. A spire designed by Flemish architect Willem Boy (1520–1592) was added during the reign of John III, but it was destroyed by a lightning strike on July 28, 1835, after which it was replaced with the present cast-iron spire.

Coats of arms of knights of the Royal Order of the Seraphim are on the walls of the church. When a knight of the Order dies, his coat of arms is hung in the church and when the funeral takes place the church's bells are rung without pause from 12:00 to 13:00.

Frear Park is a 18-hole public golf course and hockey arena, amongst other features. It began as a 9-hole course in 1931 and later was expanded to 18 holes in 1964. Currently the course provides over 46,000 rounds of golf annually.

The Rensselaer County Men's Golf Tournament is an annual tournament held around Labor Day each fall. It started in the 1940s and continues to draw many participants each year. More recently added was the Mayor's Cup which is held in late August.

Excerpt from conservationhamilton.ca:

Overview: Water mixes with carbon dioxide to make carbonic acid; the acid responsible for dissolving carbonate rocks like limestone.

This stream has been flowing underground for several meters through the channels it dissolved in the bedrock. This spring is the point where it "recharges‟ to the surface.

This isn't "pure water‟. Aside from the man-made chemicals it probably contains, it also has naturally occurring chemicals in it, like carbon dioxide.

Carbon Dioxide can be found in the air and in the soil. It is a natural gas created by humans, animals, and plants. When we breathe, we add carbon dioxide to the air. When plants

decompose, they add carbon dioxide to soil.

When rain falls through the air or percolates through the soil, it picks up the carbon dioxide and becomes carbonic acid; the same acid you find in soda pop. This acidic water is what dissolves the dolostone and makes karst. Pure water could not do it.

Depending on the time of year and the amount of rain, the stream pH will be neutral or very slightly acidic.

Porthgwarra is a relatively unknown Cornish Cove, largely owned by Lord St Levan (of St. Michael’s Mount). It is located just under 3 miles southeast of Land’s End. Once a thriving fishing cove, it now enjoys a peaceful existence surrounded by local wildlife.

Porthgwarra Beach is a popular spot for birdwatching, with a variety of seabirds and raptors visible from the cliffs. Dolphins or seals can sometimes be seen in the sea too. At low tide there is a very small beach, with an array of interesting rock pools and caves. Swimming is relatively safe within the confines of the Cove.

One of Porthgwarra's most interesting features is the cave running through part of the cliff; there is a rope to hang on to as it is treacherously slippery. Sometimes in the evening, bats may be seen flying in and out of the cave.

Porthgwarra Beach has a rich history, and visitors can explore the cove's network of tunnels which were once used for smuggling. There are also lots of reminders of Porthgwarra's fishing heritage, although today only one boat regularly works crab pots from there. However, its appearance in the hit TV series, Poldark, has gone some way to preserving memories of the harsh realities of fishing for pilchards in the eighteenth century.

thegaien.blogspot.com/2024/04/to-find-solace-in-moonopen-...

The motif of the new garden is the Noh play "Hagoromo."

Noh is one of Japan’s traditional types of theater with more than 600 years of history.

In the story, a fisherman named Hakuryō finds a celestial robe (hagoromo) on the shore. He intends to keep it as a family heirloom, but the celestial maiden laments her inability to return to the celestial realm without her robe. Moved by her sorrow, Hakuryō sympathizes and agrees to return the robe in exchange for witnessing her celestial dance. Although the celestial maiden initially hesitates, fearing Hakuryō's doubt, she eventually returns to the heavens after performing her graceful dance, leaving behind blessings upon the land.

The garden's design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese paintings, aiming to represent two-dimensional elements in a three-dimensional space. It features representations of white clouds and waves, symbolizing the celestial realm and the waterside, respectively.

As I repeatedly reconstruct the garden to align with my vision, I sometimes doubt whether it truly conveys the warmth I intend. In moments of uncertainty, I find solace in the unwavering support and trust of AKI69, whose presence has been instrumental in the realization of this project. The beauty of the architecture, plants, and creatures within the garden constantly inspires and encourages me.

May this new garden become a testament to beauty, enriching your soul with its presence.

Looking forward to the enchanting presence of celestial beings in this garden where the worlds of the sea and sky intertwine without doubt.

This bronze statue features King Edward VII in uniform on horseback. It stands on a sandstone plinth featuring relief panels showing allegorical figures. It is located on the corner of Macquarie and Bridge Streets, opposite the Conservatorium of Music. Within a few days of King Edward’s death a proposal was presented to the Lord Mayor of Sydney for the erection of a memorial to the late King in the soon-to-be constructed National Capital. This proposal, however, came to nothing, and it was another 12 months before the first steps were taken towards erecting the memorial in Sydney. The sculptor Thomas Brock (1847-1922) was one of Britain’s most prominent sculptors of the era. He is best known for his public monuments and statuary in London, especially the Victoria Memorial Buckingham Palace. R_11717

Coming from an area (NW Ohio) that is *really* flat, Iowa features a lot of gently rolling farm country and some real hills in places, especially along the Mississippi River. In this view Iowa Interstate's Rock Island heritage unit IAIS 513 leading BICR-30 is soaring above N Division Street in Davenport Iowa as it really starts to attack the climb up the hill you can see in the background. While the road runs straight up it, the railroad twists and turns its way northwest until it mounts the hills along the big muddy and strikes off across the gently rolling countryside to Iowa City, Des Moines and Omaha. 8/31/2024

The most striking features of Leslie Gulch are the diverse and often stark, towering and colorful geologic formations. The Leslie Gulch Tuff (consolidated volcanic ash), makes up the bulk of these formations. It is a rhyolite ash that erupted from the Mahogany Mountain caldera (a large volcanic depression which encompasses Leslie Gulch) in a series of violent explosions about 15.5 million years ago. Much of the material fell back into the volcano as a gaseous deposit of fine ash and rock fragments up to 1,000 feet thick. About 100,000 years later, volcanic eruptions from the Three Fingers caldera, located several miles to the northeast, deposited another layer of rhyolite tuff in Leslie Gulch. Today, the tuff is beautifully displayed as steep slopes and vertical, honeycombed towers carved over time

This scene features a trio of interacting galaxies found in the constellation of Virgo, being some 70-90 million light years away from Earth. The largest galaxy in the group is NGC 5566, which is a barred spiral galaxy stretching nearly 150,000 light years in diameter. Having widely sweeping spiral arms, with dark dusty lanes, these arms are speckled with new star forming regions throughout. The elongated galaxy to the left of NGC 5566 is the heavily distorted NGC5560. You can just see faint dusty interconnections between NGC 5560 and NGC 5566, providing us some clues that these are in fact interacting. The lower blueish galaxy NGC5569 does not appear to be disturbed, and maybe placed slightly in the foreground.

In the darkness of the surrounding space, the speckled background indicates a sea of background objects, all being in the significant distance.

Excerpt from www.aph.gov.au/visit_parliament/about_the_building:

Marble Foyer

The Marble Foyer features 48 marble columns that evoke the muted pinks and greens of the Australian landscape as well as the colours of the two Parliamentary Chambers, clad in green Cipollino marble from Italy and creamy pink Atlantide Rosa marble from Portugal. The two marble staircases feature stone finials created by Sydney sculptor Anne Ferguson, which were inspired by the seed forms of Australian trees. The floor has a series of circles, semi-circles and triangles of Paradise White marble and black Granitello Nero limestone from Belgium. The limestone is full of fossils of sea life that existed some 345 million years ago. You can see the remains of ancient corals, sponges and crinoids, or 'sea lilies'.

The walls feature twenty marquetry panels depicting Australian native flora, designed by Adelaide artist Tony Bishop and produced by Michael Retter, the six panels above the entrance feature plants traditionally used by Aboriginal people, and those on the southern side feature plants collected by Sir Joseph Banks in 1770.

Street photography is photography conducted for art or inquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places. It usually has the aim of capturing images at a decisive or poignant moment by careful framing and timing. Street photography overlaps widely with candid photography, although the latter can also be used in other settings, such as portrait photography and event photography.

Street photography does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment. Though people usually feature directly, street photography might be absent of people and can be of an object or environment where the image projects a decidedly human character in facsimile or aesthetic.

The photographer is an armed version of the solitary walker reconnoitering, stalking, cruising the urban inferno, the voyeuristic stroller who discovers the city as a landscape of voluptuous extremes. Adept of the joys of watching, connoisseur of empathy, the flâneur finds the world "picturesque".

Susan Sontag, 1977

Street photography can focus on people and their behavior in public. In this respect, the street photographer is similar to social documentary photographers or photojournalists who also work in public places, but with the aim of capturing newsworthy events. Any of these photographers' images may capture people and property visible within or from public places, which often entails navigating ethical issues and laws of privacy, security, and property.

Much of what is regarded, stylistically and subjectively, as definitive street photography was made in the era spanning the end of the 19th century through to the late 1970s, a period which saw the emergence of portable cameras that enabled candid photography in public places.

Prompt: Create an ultra-realistic digital fine art painting of Boston Harbor in 1776, wide-angle horizontal composition. The scene features tall wooden sailing ships of the Revolutionary era, their masts and rigging rising dramatically into a pale, misty sky. The central ship in the foreground is a large three-masted frigate, with intricate rigging, furled sails, and weathered wooden hull details visible. To the right, additional warships and merchant vessels are anchored in the harbor, their stern galleries ornate with carvings, reflecting softly on the calm water. On the left side, the historic Boston waterfront is depicted with colonial-era stone buildings, warehouses, and bustling wooden docks. Market stalls and smaller boats line the wharf, adding period-accurate authenticity. The atmosphere is hazy and muted, with the soft golden beige of early morning light blending into cool blue-gray mist, creating depth and a sense of history. The water reflects the tall ships with gentle ripples, emphasizing realism and texture. The overall mood is historic, maritime, and atmospheric, evoking the tense yet majestic aura of Boston Harbor during the American Revolution. no noise, no grain

The New Zealand 10 cent coin features a Māori carved mask or Koruru, along with Māori rafter patterns. The 20 cent coin has a Māori 'pukaki' carving and was released in 1990. The 50 cent coin shows the barque ship Endeavour by Captain Cook, sailing south with Mt Taranki behind. It would have passed by Mt Taranaki, early in 1770, as it sailed down to Ship Cove in the South Island after first anchoring in Turanganui (Poverty Bay) in the North Island.

I had a bit of a search to find coins to photograph. With electronic payments becoming the everyday method for financial transactions, physical currency is used less and less in our country. New Zealand adopted digital banking and payments very early in the 1980's, although actual money was still being used widely, until 1999 when online banking was more strongly adopted. Then with Covid and not wanting to touch things that have passed through many hands, electronic payments became way more prevalent. All banks in the area I live in, have long closed their branches and everything is managed online. I certainly don't carry currency in my wallet. 💲

View of the Möltenort U-Boat Memorial in Heikendorf near Kiel.

Situated on the Kiel Fjord, the memorial was erected in 1930. It is Germany's central memorial to the members of the German submarine forces who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars, as well as to all victims of submarine warfare. It also commemorates submariners of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) who died while on active service.

The memorial features a commemorative column over 15 metres (49 ft) high, crowned by a bronze eagle nearly 5 metres (16 ft) tall. A semicircular walkway surrounding the monument displays 115 bronze plaques bearing the names of fallen submariners of the Imperial German Navy and the Kriegsmarine, together with members of the modern German Navy (Deutsche Marine) who lost their lives while on duty.

This photograph features Ljubljanica river in Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia.

There is mention of a wooden bridge in this location from 1280. It was at first called the Old Bridge (Stari most) and later the Lower Bridge (Spodnji most), in contrast to the Upper Bridge that was built in the location of the nowadays Cobblers' Bridge in the same century. It was also named the Špital Bridge (Špitalski most) after the nearby poorhouse, which was established in the early 14th century. It was built anew in 1657 after a fire.

The Triple Bridge is a group of three bridges across the Ljubljanica River. It connects the Ljubljana's historical, medieval, town on one bank, and the modern city of Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia, on the other.

In 1842, the Lower Bridge was replaced by a new bridge designed by Giovanni Picco, an Italian architect from Villach, and named Franz's Bridge, (Frančev most) in honor of Archduke Franz Karl of Austria. It also became known as the Franciscan Bridge (Frančiškanski most). This bridge, opened on 25 September 1842, had two arches and a metal fence. The essentials of the bridge have been preserved until today, which is evidenced by the inscribed dedication to the archduke above its central pier, reading in Latin "ARCHIDVCI. FRANCISCO. CAROLO. MDCCCXLII. CIVITAS.", which means "To Archduke Franz Karl in 1842 by the Town."

In order to prevent the 1842 stone arch bridge from being a bottleneck, the architect Jože Plečnik designed in 1929 the extension of the bridge with two footbridges at a sligh angle on each side of it. In collaboration with his student Ciril Tavčar, who drew the plans, he published the proposal in the same year in the journal Ljubljanski Zvon. Construction started in 1931 and continued until spring 1932. The bridge was opened for traffic in April 1932. The bridge was renovated in 1992. Since 2007, all the three bridges have been part of the Ljubljana pedestrian-only zone.

Features in the 1960 models included tailamps molded into the rear fenders and heavy grill teeth. New features include aluminum radiators, but only with 270 hp and 290 hp engines. Also for the first time, all fuel-injection engines required manual transmissions. Save the Manauls! If folks learned to operate the entire car, not just the steering wheel and occasionally the brakes, I'd bet they'd like driving better. If they knew the sense of control imparted by that third pedal, I'd bet they would strive for its mastery. If they knew the excitement that accompanied a perfectly timed heel-toe downshift, I can guarantee they'd be hooked.

Seen on a Cold and Frosty Morning. Brigg Garden Centre is the flagship centre of the British Garden Centre Group and is one of the largest garden centres in the UK. It joined the family-owned group in 2000 and since then has seen massive developments and constant improvements to provide you with a local first-class garden centre.

Mercury Court features one of Ottawa’s historic architectural features. The Statue of Mercury, which is a functioning weathervane, was originally placed on the long since demolished Sun Life Building in 1898. The statue has been lovingly preserved and provided by the National Capital Commission for public display at Mercury Court.

The Mercury Court building was originally built as the RCMP Headquarters. It was later converted to house the Laroque Department Store. As Ottawa’s only francophone department store, it was an important part of the City’s bilingual culture. It closed in the early 1970’s. In 1990, the building underwent a classic transformation combining all the elements of a modern office/retail building while maintaining the architectural integrity of this 95-year-old landmark.

This postcard above features the Club NORD, the baseball champions of the City of Valleyfield in 1932, as identified by the French text at the bottom of the photo. The photograph was taken by Elio Gendron.

Information: Team Name: Club NORD

Achievement: Champions of the City of Valleyfield (Champion de la Cité de Valleyfield)

Year: 1932

Location: Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec, Canada

Photographer: Élie Gendron

A local newspaper article from July 1932 confirms the "Club Nord" was an active and successful baseball team in Valleyfield during that year, winning a significant game with a score of 7 to 3. The area has a rich industrial history, and sports were a significant part of the community.

(July 1932) Valleyfield. -- The best baseball game of the year was played these last few days between the Nord club and the Roxy. The Nord won the victory by a score of 7 to 3. Léo Smith and Victor Latour hit a home run in the fifth inning.

Baseball has a rich history in Valleyfield, Quebec (Salaberry-de-Valleyfield), with notable involvement in both professional minor leagues in the early 20th century and significant success in Little League Baseball.

Professional & Semi-Professional History:

Early Professional Baseball: A professional minor league team, the Valleyfield Madcaps (or simply the Valleyfield team), competed in the Eastern Canada League in 1922.

Mid-Season Relocation: The franchise was bought by a local paper mill mid-season and moved to Cap-de-la-Madeleine (now part of Trois-Rivières), just across the Saint-Maurice River, where it finished the season.

Provincial League: The city was part of the broader Quebec baseball landscape, which included various iterations of the semi-professional and independent Provincial League (Ligue Provinciale) operating through the mid-20th century, though a consistent top-tier professional team did not remain in Valleyfield after 1922.

Élie Gendron (1883-1953) was a highly versatile and significant regional photographer in Quebec, primarily active in the Beauharnois and Salaberry-de-Valleyfield areas between approximately 1909 and 1943.

Career and Work: Versatility: Gendron displayed a wide range of photographic skills, shifting between various styles and subjects throughout his career. Each period of his professional life often corresponded to a different signature or approach.

Subjects: His work spanned from formal studio portraits to large-scale documentation of social and religious events, sports events (like the one in your photo), and industrial photography.

Key Documentation: He captured the industrial boom of the early 20th century in the region, including the massive construction efforts for the Beauharnois canal and hydroelectric power station.

Legacy: Gendron is considered one of the important regional Quebec photographers, alongside others like the Pinsonneault and Granger brothers, for capturing his local area and era on glass plates and film.

Studios: He was based in Valleyfield from about 1921 onwards, and his photos are known for their high technical quality.

Legacy and Recognition - The continued fascination with his photos led to the publication of a book in 2018 titled Élie Gendron (1883-1953), un photographe aux multiples signatures by author Marcel Labelle. This 168-page book contains over 300 of his historical photographs from the region.

Rail Adventure's 43480 emerges from the Great Western booking hall which spans the lines between platforms 2 and 3 at Tyseley at dusk on a chilly Friday evening. The 125 Group in association with RA and Chiltern Railways had organised this tour reminiscent of the Master Cutler in connection with the 125th Anniversary of the opening of London Marylebone. 1Z46 was due a crew change here and with that duly completed the tour departed this delightful station which is packed with period features of the railways of yesteryear.

A quick shot of the Orion Nebula (M42), one of my favourite celestial objects and a really satisfying target. I've been waiting a year for an opportunity to image this nebula again, this time with a polar alignment and guiding to enable much longer exposures than the 15 second subs I took last time and with a lower ISO to reduce noise. The next project with this is to either stitch two shots together or, better still, rotate the camera in order to fit both the Orion Nebula and the nearby Running Man Nebula into one frame.

13 x 4 minute exposures at 400 ISO

8 x dark frames

10 x flat frames

21 x bias/offset frames (subtracted from flat frames only)

[Wikipedia] The Orion Nebula (also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way, being south of Orion's Belt in the constellation of Orion. It is one of the brightest nebulae, and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. M42 is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. The M42 nebula is estimated to be 24 light years across. It has a mass of about 2000 times the mass of the Sun. Older texts frequently refer to the Orion Nebula as the Great Nebula in Orion or the Great Orion Nebula.

The Orion Nebula is one of the most scrutinized and photographed objects in the night sky, and is among the most intensely studied celestial features. The nebula has revealed much about the process of how stars and planetary systems are formed from collapsing clouds of gas and dust. Astronomers have directly observed protoplanetary disks, brown dwarfs, intense and turbulent motions of the gas, and the photo-ionizing effects of massive nearby stars in the nebula. [Wikipedia]

Saint-Tugdual Cathedral in Tréguier is a religious building located in Tréguier, in the Côtes-d'Armor department of France. It was the cathedral of the former Bishopric of Tréguier, one of the nine bishoprics of historical Brittany until 1790. Today, it is the seat of the parish of Saint-Yves in Tréguier. The burial place of Saint Yves, it is a sanctuary to which pilgrims come, particularly around May 19th for the feast of Saint Yves, when a grand pardon (pilgrimage) takes place. It is one of the seven cathedrals along the Tro Breiz pilgrimage route.

Built in the Gothic style between the 13th and 15th centuries, the building nevertheless includes a Romanesque section, the Hastings Tower, preserved from the earlier Romanesque cathedral. The 14th-century construction phases made it a major example of Breton architecture, serving as a laboratory for Breton Gothic forms alongside other churches such as the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame in Lamballe and the Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours in Guingamp.

Its most striking architectural features are the three towers rising above the transept, while the façade has none, the three external portals, and the location of the largest bell tower with its spire at the southern end of the transept, all of which give the cathedral an unusual silhouette.

Redshank:-

As its name suggests, redshanks' most distinctive features are their bright orange-red legs. They have a medium-length bill with an orange base to match, brown speckled back and wings and paler belly.

Where to see them

Redshanks breed in damp places like saltmarshes, flood meadows and around lakes, but during winter you'll see lots more of them on estuaries and coastal lagoons – as many as half of these birds may be from Iceland. The greatest concentrations of breeding birds are in parts of Scotland and north-west England.
