Richmond Park has a wonderful collection of gnarly trees with anthropomophic features. The features are not quite so well defined in this, but it makes up for it by its scale and he has a lovely white beard. A tree with a beard, Treebeard?

"The Lower Geyser Basin is the largest geyser basin in area, in Yellowstone National Park. It covers approximately 11 square miles. By comparison, the Upper Geyser Basin only covers about one square mile. Because of its large size, the thermal features in the Lower Geyser Basin tend to be clumped in widely spaced groups. The easiest grouping to get to and probably the most interesting to explore is the Fountain Paint Pot area."

This image features the Green Ibis (Mesembrinibis cayennensis), captured in Restrepo, Meta, Colombia. Known for its iridescent green and purple feathers, the ibis stands out beautifully against the vibrant backdrop of the lush Colombian environment. The bird was perched delicately on a tree branch, where its sleek silhouette contrasted against the soft light filtering through the canopy. The calm, tranquil atmosphere of the scene was a perfect match for capturing the bird’s elegant form and reflective plumage.
In terms of technique, I used a Canon R5 with a 800mm f/11 lens and a 1.4x extender to maintain the required reach while preserving image clarity. The f/16 aperture ensured that both the bird and its environment were in focus, while the ISO 1600 helped balance the low light of the forest. The resulting sharpness and depth allow the vibrant plumage and the bird’s intricate textures to come through vividly. Capturing such a shot in the wild, with the ibis being perfectly positioned, required patience, but the payoff was worth it.

This image features a female Northern Northern Yellow Warbler (Setophaga petechia), photographed in the coastal rainforest near Capurganá, Chocó, Colombia. Her soft yellow plumage, tinged with olive on the wings and tail, stood out gently against a blurred wash of tropical green. She perched momentarily on a diagonal branch, offering an elegant pose and clean profile. The lighting was low and diffused through the canopy, casting a soft, natural glow that matched the bird’s understated beauty.
I captured this frame using the Canon EOS R5 and RF 800mm lens, handheld with a 1.4x extender, producing a focal length of 1120mm. Because the lens aperture is fixed at f/16, I raised the ISO to 3200 to achieve adequate exposure in the shaded forest. The camera selected a shutter speed of 1/125 second—slow, but just fast enough given the warbler’s stillness. These conditions tested the limits of both gear and timing. Photographing small songbirds in dense tropical cover is always a challenge, but when the composition, light, and behavior align for a few seconds, it’s more than enough.

In the mornings the plants in the South-African Glasshouse of the Hortus are watered. Here's a very wet Heather. It was first described in 1785 by a student of Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) in Stockholm, one musician called Jacobus Bernhardus Struve (1767-1826). Struve hailed from a pharmacist family but his heart was especially in music and he became an accomplished composer in particular of comic operas.
There are many heathers and they're extensively studied. As far as I know the last rediscription and naming of this plant is by Edward George Hudson (1938-2015) and Inge Magdalene Oliver, née Nitzsche (1947-2003) in 2005 as Erica unicolor subsp. mutica. One of its notable features are the generally three-flowered clusters. It's an endangered plant and the Hortus is happy to have one in its care!

The history of Cape Palliser Lighthouse:
Cape Palliser features prominently in Maori history and the legends of Kupe. The area also featured in the colonisation of New Zealand.
The rugged coast and notorious Cook Strait gales contributed to many early shipwrecks. Six months before the light was lit in 1897, a ship was wrecked within 4 miles of the new tower and 12 of the 21 crew drowned. While a light on Cape Palliser reduced the number of shipwrecks, the area still remained hazardous for the unwary.
The tower at Cape Palliser has been painted with red and white stripes to make it stand out from the hills behind it. There are only two other lighthouses in New Zealand with stripes, rather than the standard plain white. Dog Island Lighthouse and Cape Campbell Lighthouse have black and white stripes.
Operation of the Cape Palliser light:
Cape Palliser lighthouse is still fitted with the original Fresnel lens, which was installed in 1897.
In 1954 the light was converted from oil to diesel-generated electricity. In 1967 it was connected to mains electricity. A diesel-electric generator provides standby emergency power.
The lighthouse was automated and the keepers were withdrawn in 1986.
The light is monitored remotely from Maritime New Zealand’s Wellington office.
Life at Cape Palliser light station:
Owing to its isolation in the early days, life at Cape Palliser created its own unique problems for the keepers and their families.
The original access to the lighthouse was a dirt track up a 58 metre-high cliff. This was a dangerous walk for the keepers, especially in stormy weather.
In 1912 a set of 258 steps were built up to the tower, which provided the keepers with much safer access, although still a physically demanding walk.
Stores were delivered to the station every 3 months. If the seas were too rough, the stores could be landed at the more sheltered Kawakawa Bay, some 6 kilometres away. The Cape Palliser letter book is filled with countless tales of stores being lost during the unloading process.
With the storage buildings and keepers’ homes at sea level, the unloading was easier than at many other stations where goods had to be hauled up cliffs using a trolley on rails. The keepers still had to haul the light supplies (oil and kerosene) up the cliff face to the light station. They did this on a railway, using a hand winch.
When the lighthouse was eventually connected to the nearby settlements by road, keepers would collect their mail and supplies once a week from Pirinoa. (Courtesy www.maritimenz.govt.nz)

In addition to the temple's famous building, the property features wooded grounds covered with a variety of mosses. This Japanese garden was supposedly designed by the great landscape artist Sōami.
In the later periods of Japanese garden history, fine stones were transported from a ruined or impoverished garden to a new one. According to the book Landscape design: A Cultural and Architectural History by Elizabeth Barlow Rogers, "In 1474, following his retirement from the shogunate, Yoshimasa (1436-1490), had some of the stones and pine trees of the Flowery Palace and Muromachi Hall, both of which had been devastated by civil warfare, removed to his villa retreat at the base of Higashiyama (the Eastern Hills). There he lived from 1438 until his death, when the villa was converted to the Zen temple, Jisho-ji, or Ginkakuji (the Temple of the Silver Pavilion), as it is better known."
The Zen culture is not entirely represented in this garden because it was financed by the shogunate as a retreat and the primary use was aesthetic enjoyment. Instead of being designed by and for the use of monks, practitioners of zazen, or seated meditation.
Ginkakuji was constructed in relation to its surroundings. This is described in the Journal of Asian Studies by Ichito Ishida and Delmer M. Brown, "The southeast corner of the first floor has openings in the walls, since a pond is located on that corner of the building, beyond which the moon rises between the peaks of Higashiyama. And since a lake extending northeastward reflected light that suffices even for reading, the room on the northeast corner has been planned as a library. Therefore, the natural objects do not merely surround the building, twisting it out of shape but supply intrinsic motivation for the structural design." The sand garden of Ginkaku-ji has become particularly well known; and the carefully formed pile of sand which is said to symbolize Mount Fuji is an essential element in the garden.

An image of some of the incredible landscape forms found in Capitol Reef National Park, located in southern Utah, USA. The dark fin like structures are magma dikes that formed when volcanos were active around 3 million ago.
his face, weathered like old leather, told stories no words could reach. from the street, i caught a glimpse of him—his hands folded, his gaze steady, as if lost between memory and the present. the café den coll, open to the street, framed the scene like a stage. he spoke to another man, but his thoughts seemed miles away. i focused my lens on him, drawn to the weight of his silence, the years etched in his features. the slate beside him bore the words "se feliz," a handwritten reminder, almost ironic in its quiet boldness. perhaps it’s the simplest wisdom, the hardest to follow: be happy.
"The monument features a 28-foot (8.53 m) heroic-sized bronze sculpture, Angel of the Resurrection, that portrays Michael the Archangel lifting up a dead soldier out of the "flames of war". This is set upon an 11-foot (3.35 m) black-granite base, with two inscribed dedications and four bronze plaques listing the 1,307 names in alphabetical order. The work was designed and created by Walker Hancock (1901–1998), Instructor of Sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Hancock had been one of the "Monuments Men" who recovered art looted by the Nazis."

The 93Km wide crater Copernicus is one of the most famous features on the moon. The 2min. HD video capture by my Huawei P9 phone was converted to 2900 individual frames. They were stacked and only the 175 best was merged to a single picture.
Celestron 9, 25 inch aperture SCT evolution telescope with a Baader Planetarium 8mm ocular projection via an NeXYZ smartphone adapter equivalent to 294X magnification.
This scene features a trio of interacting galaxies found in the constellation of Virgo, being some 70-90 million light years away from Earth. The largest galaxy in the group is NGC 5566, which is a barred spiral galaxy stretching nearly 150,000 light years in diameter. Having widely sweeping spiral arms, with dark dusty lanes, these arms are speckled with new star forming regions throughout. The elongated galaxy to the left of NGC 5566 is the heavily distorted NGC5560. You can just see faint dusty interconnections between NGC 5560 and NGC 5566, providing us some clues that these are in fact interacting. The lower blueish galaxy NGC5569 does not appear to be disturbed, and maybe placed slightly in the foreground.
In the darkness of the surrounding space, the speckled background indicates a sea of background objects, all being in the significant distance.
This image represents only 34% of the cameras full frame, composed of luminance, red, green, blue, and hydrogen alpha filtered colour channels. Thanks for having a look.

Harpa is a concert hall and conference centre in Reykjavík, Iceland. The building features a distinctive colored glass facade inspired by the basalt landscape of Iceland. Harpa was designed by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in co-operation with Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. The structure consists of a steel framework clad with geometric shaped glass panels of different colours. The glass façade consists of 714 LED lights, 486 in the eastern part of the building and 228 in the western part.

It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas and as usual in this period it's time for a Christmas themed creation.

Santa, who is coming home from a relaxing walk, has also a nice off-road vehicle painted with a color scheme matching with the cottage. You can spot it on the right.Santa's Cottage features a classic Xmas color scheme, an uncommon shape and an unconventional doors/windows style.
The main feature is probably the asymmetrical roof with a very sloping shape to the left. The woodshed is located under the excess roof.
The red/white/black color combo is simple but effective, and the snowy trees in the background match well.
Last but not least the door and windows are round, a shape rarely spotted on a cottage, but quite common in Hobbit houses.
If this house reminds you of anything you are right, it's basically my Blue Cottage set up for the Christmas holidays.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has peered into the chaos of the Cartwheel Galaxy, revealing new details about star formation and the galaxy’s central black hole. Webb’s powerful infrared gaze produced this detailed image of the Cartwheel and two smaller companion galaxies against a backdrop of many other galaxies. This image provides a new view of how the Cartwheel Galaxy has changed over billions of years.
The Cartwheel Galaxy, located about 500 million light-years away in the Sculptor constellation, is a rare sight. Its appearance, much like that of the wheel of a wagon, is the result of an intense event – a high-speed collision between a large spiral galaxy and a smaller galaxy not visible in this image. Collisions of galactic proportions cause a cascade of different, smaller events between the galaxies involved; the Cartwheel is no exception.
The collision most notably affected the galaxy’s shape and structure. The Cartwheel Galaxy sports two rings — a bright inner ring and a surrounding, colorful ring. These two rings expand outwards from the center of the collision, like ripples in a pond after a stone is tossed into it. Because of these distinctive features, astronomers call this a “ring galaxy,” a structure less common than spiral galaxies like our Milky Way.
The bright core contains a tremendous amount of hot dust with the brightest areas being the home to gigantic young star clusters. On the other hand, the outer ring, which has expanded for about 440 million years, is dominated by star formation and supernovas. As this ring expands, it plows into surrounding gas and triggers star formation.
Other telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope, have previously examined the Cartwheel. But the dramatic galaxy has been shrouded in mystery – perhaps literally, given the amount of dust that obscures the view. Webb, with its ability to detect infrared light, now uncovers new insights into the nature of the Cartwheel.

Rail Adventure's 43480 emerges from the Great Western booking hall which spans the lines between platforms 2 and 3 at Tyseley at dusk on a chilly Friday evening. The 125 Group in association with RA and Chiltern Railways had organised this tour reminiscent of the Master Cutler in connection with the 125th Anniversary of the opening of London Marylebone. 1Z46 was due a crew change here and with that duly completed the tour departed this delightful station which is packed with period features of the railways of yesteryear.

The anchors on the base of the statue represent Mexican Marines that died while in service.
The Veracruz Naval Museum (Museo Histórico Naval de México) honors Mexican mariners and naval personnel who died in service, particularly during the 1914 US occupation. It features exhibits on naval history, including the defense of the port, honoring those who fell in the line of duty.

Toadstool hoodoo is one of the badland features visible from the trail that leads from the The Gooseberry Badlands overlook near Gooseberry Creek, Wyoming. This overlook lies along WY 431 and provides a glimpse of the badlands formations common in Early Eocene Willwood formation of the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. The Willwood, famous for its mammalian fossils, consists of a series of cyclic fluvial (stream/river) and floodplain deposits. In the badlands visible from the overlook, ribbon-like thin channel sands thought to be avulsion channels or splays can be seen alternating with red paleosol and drab floodplain deposits. There are some thicker fluvial sands that represent the trunk or main stream channels. Present day intermittent, ephemeral streams have eroded these sediments into fanciful hoodoos, pillars; castles; small arches and fluted walls often capped by one of the ribbon or thicker fluvial sands. A 1.5 mile nature trails winds into the badlands formations from the overlook giving hikers a glimpse into the rugged terrain that covers much of the central Bighorn Basin.
This stunning image by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope features the spiral galaxy NGC 5643 in the constellation of Lupus (The Wolf). Looking this good isn’t easy; thirty different exposures, for a total of 9 hours observation time, together with the high resolution and clarity of Hubble, were needed to produce an image of such high level of detail and of beauty.
NGC 5643 is about 60 million light-years away from Earth and has been the host of a recent supernova event (not visible in this latest image). This supernova (2017cbv) was a specific type in which a white dwarf steals so much mass from a companion star that it becomes unstable and explodes. The explosion releases significant amounts of energy and lights up that part of the galaxy.
The observation was proposed by Adam Riess, who was awarded a Nobel Laureate in physics 2011 for his contributions to the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe, alongside Saul Perlmutter and Brian Schmidt.

One of the first lessons of photography is to always turn and look at what's in back of what your are shooting, because sometimes the spectacle in front of us also shines light on what's behind us. One mile in altitude above Badwater Basin, I have come to Dante's View in the Black Mountains, to watch the sun set behind the Panamint Range to the west. It is a spectacular view point with a precipitous drop, all the way to the salt flats on the floor of Death Valley. The sun is crouched behind a cloud out there, sending great streaks of light across the jagged peaks, at an angle that still doesn't totally penetrate to the depth of the valley--an image I will share at another time perhaps. But for now, I remembered to look back,for this view down the Amargosa Range. Coffin Peak drops more gradually from this side, the flank ridges forming a gunsite of sorts, aiming into the skyline of peaks beyond. The sky seems to literally come at me from this angle, clouds parting to either side of me as though I am unmovable, like water around an island in the stream. Geologically old, you look out into time here, and after awhile in the quiet, time creeps into my thoughts as well. As I watch, a spotlight appears on a mountainside down the line. Maybe it symbolizes a path, a route, that I could have done better, could have done different. I always think so...I wonder how you ever know, really, the best way. The view behind me is always of remembrance, and some things are stripped and barren when I look back. But memory has many landscapes, and to say mine are all this simple would not be fair. I look for as long as I dare while waiting for the end of this day, before I turn around again, and face into it.
