This lovely necklace features red silver leaf jasper beads and a pendant that has been carefully hand-wrapped in reclaimed sterling silver wire. It is finished with an authentic Bali silver toggle clasp.

Reminiscent of silvery leaves in a forest, this finely colored and patterned jasper contains shades of cream and black, bits of brown and, occasionally, hints of red. Its patterns tend to be in lines and bands.

Bali silver is handcrafted by talented silversmiths throughout the the island of Bali, a small island in the Indonesian archipelago, which is renowned for its artistic and cultural heritage.

For centuries, Balinese artists have perfected their skills. Communities specialize in specific artistic traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. As a result, these silversmiths display superb technique and immense patience. Each bead is carefully made with exquisite detail. Every silver dot is individually placed, every surface patterned by hand. Each bead is a work of art, and no two are exactly alike.

Indoor Waterfall Water Feature Fountain - Features / Waterfalls / Fountains

Indoor waterfalls dramatically improve ambiance by bringing the sights and sounds of a modern waterfall into your home or office. The sound of indoor fountains are associated with beautiful nature settings, peaceful vacations and meditative tranquility. An indoor waterfall can provide many health benefits as well. The flow of water captures airborne particles and dust from the air. The slow evaporation of water releases beneficial negative ions into the air and acts as a natural humidifier. For more sensitive environments or healthcare settings we offer a line of indoor fountains incorporating specialized precautions against bacteria and microorganisms. These options include Saniguard coatings, ultraviolet light sterilization systems and reverse osmosis systems.

Holvaaja features an Aketch sculpt in Coffee resin. This unique made-to-order full set fantasy doll has been growing throughout this year, with elements added as inspiration strikes. The concept for the character is a dark elf that travels through portals to different worlds, picking elements from various time periods and civilizations. I'm so happy to be able to work on such a fun commission project!

Holvaaja wears garments made of African Ankara fabric and their (the character is intersex) belt and sandals are decorated with African inspired beadwork and feathers. The wild white hair made of mulberry silk roving is adorned with a antlers evoking the Celtic horned God mythology. Bird skulls and little bones are suspended in the prongs like a gruesome dreamcatcher. They carry a shaman's staff with various animal skulls, 3 Viking axes, 3 leather masks, and a shamanic drum with Sámi (Lapland minority people) pictographs. It was nice to add a bit of my own Finnish culture into this collector of talismans. Their body is adorned with fantasy war paint.

The name Holvaaja is Finnish and means "Maker of Portals". It is a nod to one of my favourite childhood books, Lavondyss by Robert Holdstock where a young girl Tallis makes masks to create 'Hollowings' — pathways in space and time which allow her to step through time and mythology.

Everything is handmade by me, except for the 3D printed skulls ( ordered from ETSY artisan Scale Grail) and metal axes (jewellery parts I got somewhere years ago) I only painted.

circa 1946-1947

This photograph features a production of Ladies in Retirement by the University of Hawai’i Theatre Guild in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawai’i. This production was put up just after the end of World War II. Hawai’i was a place of central conflict, notable for the Pearl Harbor attacks. During the war, citizens of Japanese ancestry were placed in internment camps.

The high racial and political tensions of the time makes the presence of an actor of color in this production especially noteworthy. This interracial casting was intentional, and as a matter of fact, the entire production (which was the most popular of the 1946-1947 season) was an interracial endeavor, with those of Caucasian, Asian, and Polynesian descent all participating in the mounting of the show.

This image shows the southern flank of Pavonis Mons. The large sinuous channel at the bottom of the image is located at the uppermost part of the volcano where collapse features are following the regional linear trend. A lava tube of this size indicates a high volume of lava.

Pavonis Mons is one of the three aligned Tharsis Volcanoes. The four Tharsis volcanoes are Ascreaus Mons, Pavonis Mons, Arsia Mons, and Olympus Mars. All four are shield type volcanoes. Shield volcanoes are formed by lava flows originating near or at the summit, building up layers upon layers of lava. The Hawaiian islands on Earth are shield volcanoes. The three aligned volcanoes are located along a topographic rise in the Tharsis region. Along this trend there are increased tectonic features and additional lava flows.

Pavonis Mons is the smallest of the four volcanoes, rising 14 km above the mean Mars surface level with a width of 375 km. It has a complex summit caldera, with the smallest caldera deeper than the larger caldera. Like most shield volcanoes the surface has a low profile. In the case of Pavonis Mons the average slope is only 4 degrees.

NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft has spent over 15 years in orbit around Mars, circling the planet more than 69,000 times. It holds the record for longest working spacecraft at Mars. THEMIS, the IR/VIS camera system, has collected data for the entire mission and provides images covering all seasons and lighting conditions.

Over the years many features of interest have received repeated imaging, building up a suite of images covering the entire feature. From the deepest chasma to the tallest volcano, individual dunes inside craters and dune fields that encircle the north pole, channels carved by water and lava, and a variety of other feature, THEMIS has imaged them all.

For the next several months the image of the day will focus on the Tharsis volcanoes, the various chasmata of Valles Marineris, and the major dunes fields. We hope you enjoy these images!

This feature from Richard Kimbrough won an honorable mention.

Built between 1879 and 1882, this American Florentine Revival-style building was the former royal palace for the Kingdom of Hawaii, designed by Thomas J. Baker, Charles J. Wall, and Isaac Moore for King David Kalākaua. The palace was the home of the monarchs of the Kingdom of Hawaii between 1882 and 1893, the executive building of the provisional government and Republic of Hawaii from 1893 until 1898, the capitol building of the Territory of Hawaii from 1898 until 1959, and the capitol building of the State of Hawaii from 1959 until 1969. During its time as a territorial and state capitol, the building was altered and renovated, removing or neglecting several original features, enclosing parts of the lanais that encircle the building’s exterior, adding additional office space outside of the building’s original footprint, and replacing some of the original windows with french doors. The building replaced an earlier ‘Iolani Palace, a western-style structure with elements reminiscent of the Greek Revival style and Creole cottages in the United States, which stood on the same site, and was built in 1844-45. The earlier palace was an aliʻi, which featured no sleeping quarters, but included a dining room, throne room, and a reception room, being only about ⅓ the size of the present building. The previous building had similarities to the present structure, including a raised lanai wrapping around the entire structure, with a hipped roof, a doric colonnade, large windows, and separate homes on the grounds where the royal family lived and slept. By 1874, when King David Kalākaua ascended to power, the original palace, built of wood was in poor condition, and in 1879, the building was demolished and construction began on the present palace. Inspired by knowledge of European royal palaces and architecture, the palace features four corner towers and towers on the front and rear facades, which all feature mansard roofs topped with cornices and cresting, arched double-hung windows, quoins, decorative relief panels, circular medallions on the arched and circular roof dormers, and flagpoles atop each mansard roof. Between the towers and on the second and third floors of the front and rear towers are lanais on the first and second floors of each side of the building, with staircases to the entrances on the front and rear at the foot of the towers, corinthian columns supporting arches, decorative balustrades, iron railings on the second floor, large windows and door openings with decorative trim surrounds, decorative tile floors, decorative ceilings, a cornice above, and a decorative railing wrapping the base of the building’s large low-slope and hipped roof. Underneath the lanais and enclosed spaces of the second and third floors of the palace is the basement, which is surrounded by a light well, with access provided to exterior entrances on the sides of the building via staircases. Inside, the palace has a layout with large rooms on either side of a central hallway on the first and second floors, which are linked via a large grand staircase, with the first floor hallway known as the Grand Hall. On one side of the Grand Hall is the throne room, taking up the entirety of this part of the first floor, with a dressing room behind the thrones, while on the other side of the Grand Hall is the Blue Room, a reception hall, and the State Dining Room, with a bathroom, and butler’s pantry between the State Dining Room and the Grand Hall. On the second floor, the hallway features a ceiling with two decorative medallions on either side of a central stained glass dome, with the room where Queen Liliʻuokalani was imprisoned for 9 months following the second of the Wilcox rebellions in 1895 sitting on the ocean-facing side of this end of the building, with a restroom and closet between this room and the Queen’s Bedroom. All bedrooms on this floor are linked via diagonal hallways to the second floor rooms in the corner towers, which are utilized as small sitting rooms. On the opposite side of the hallway is the King’s Bedroom, King’s Office, and Music Room, as well as an additional bathroom. In the basement, the building is split by two hallways that intersect at the base of the basement stairs, running between the building’s service areas, including the kitchen, as well as administrative offices for the Kingdom of Hawaii, with most of the space now mostly housing exhibits and display cases. The interior of the building features extensive detailing and decoration that was restored after the building ceased being utilized as the State Capitol in 1969, including grand carved and reproduction staircases and balusters, decorative plaster ceilings with medallions, decorative crown moulding, carved wood doors and trim, wood floors, bathrooms with built-in water closets, sinks, bathtubs, and showers, period appropriate light fixtures, as well as period and reproduction furnishings and pieces of art that were in the building during the Kingdom of Hawaii period. The palace was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1962, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Following the completion of the Hawaii State capitol in 1969, a 9-year restoration program was carried out on the palace, with the palace opening in 1978 as a museum, run by the nonprofit organization Friends of ʻIolani Palace, that preserves the structure and tells the story of the Hawaiian Royal family who once resided and ruled from the palace, as well as allowing for visitors to admire the beautiful restored and preserved details of the interior and exterior of the building. On January 17, 1993, a vigil was held on the grounds of the palace, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii by a group consisting of primarily white American businessmen, deposing the monarchy that had ruled the kingdom from 1795 until 1893. The grounds of the palace features restored landscaping intended to show what the palace looked like at the time of its completion, and the relocated ‘Iolani Barracks that once stood on the present site of the present state capitol, which now sits to the northeast of the main palace. The building is the only former royal Palace in the United States, and sits in the middle of park-like grounds surrounded by state, federal, and local government buildings in the heart of Downtown Honolulu.

Outdoor Garden Water Feature Fountain - Features / Fountains

Garden fountains are beautiful outdoor water accents. Outdoor fountains are used in public parks, gardens, yards, patios and decks. The most traditional design is a tiered waterfall with multiple levels where the water cascades down many levels of stone. A garden fountain is very dramatic and has a high degree of water noise and motion due to the water becoming airborne and crashing into the lower level pool below. The water finds it's way into the pool at the bottom and is taken back to the top again by a powerful water pump to begin it's journey anew. Some famous artists and sculptors have created garden water features which add life and elegance to their sculptures. Today craftsmen and increased knowledge have made available garden fountains for private residences.

Interview

Sanan Aleskerov, the “biophile” photographer

One of the features that make photography particularly interesting is that it is halfway between informative documentary and artistic creation. It is this bivalency that makes it so enriching, in particular when the photographs in question reflect the life of a country such as Azerbaijan.

Sanan Aleskerov is one of the towering figures of Azerbaijani photography. Here he tells us of his career up until now and gives us his point of view on photographic creation in Azerbaijan and the rest of the world. For Aleskerov, only truth must be predominant in art…

The learning years

Sanan Aleskerov was born in Baku in 1956. With a smile, he adds that he has always lived here and always will. After graduation from the school of journalism, he joined the TASS news agency as a photographer. After a year and a half, he decided to leave this job and give up documentary photography in order to turn to artistic photography. During his brief experience as a photographer-journalist, Aleskerov had been, like all his colleagues, subject to orders from the State. In Soviet society, there were very clear dividing lines between what was “good” and what was “evil”. This made the ever-present censorship oppressive and therefore unbearable for the young photographer.

The famous Azerbaijani photographer says that he has never benefited from any real training, despite his university education. He was given his first camera at the age of 12: it was a birthday gift from his mother. For a long time, the camera was barely every used. He was bitten by the photography bug during his military service. Like many other young conscripts, Sanan Aleskerov read pornographic magazines. The photos of naked women fascinated him because of the aesthetics of the lines, the curves, the colors and the interplay of light and shadow. The young man then chose to pursue his interest in photographic art by reading specialist reviews, many of which came from abroad (Czechoslovakia, United States, etc.). It is for this reason that Aleskerov regards himself as self-taught. Moreover, artistic photography as a discipline was not taught at university and was indeed almost banned in the Soviet Union.

Teacher-photographer

Today, Sanan Aleskerov’s renown is international. He has traveled widely and presented exhibitions all over the world. Having said that, over the last ten years or so, he has been participating steadily less in this kind of international event. He explains that his photos are somewhat out of place when compared to what is currently fashionable. He has taken to getting his pleasure from transmitting his know-how to the younger generations, through a workshop he runs and in which he gives private lessons.

His work method is based on a total freedom of action. For him, the photographer must be guided by spontaneity, must be able to make the most of the little things that life throws up. Aleskerov never plans his work, never functions on the basis of a project. The themes are born of themselves. Often photos taken on the spur of the moment remain something of a mystery for the photographer himself. Then, with time, the artist finds the key to interpret the images, these little vignettes of life.

Nowadays, the University of Baku provides real courses in photography, but they are still somewhat basic and are not very popular, because photographic art is still an expensive pleasure… The training provided by Sanan Aleskerov is classical in nature. He believes that the basics are primordial and that solid technical and historical competence is essential for the budding professional. Even the Soviet period should not be set aside. It gave rise to a tradition, whether good or bad, but which is now an integral part of the contemporary reality and one that must not remain hidden. For some time, there was a photography school, linked to the school of journalism, and a great many photographers were trained there. It is these photographers who provided all the material for the photographic reviews and publications. Even though the general tendency was ideological, and therefore more oriented towards documentary and social aspects, some experimentation went on, and technical advances were made. Aleskerov played a huge part in this non-official reflection.

A quest for truth…

When Aleskerov left the TASS news agency, he soon joined up with artists looking out for a new form of artistic expression. Informal circles were created, and saw the creation of a number of projects that were innovative for Azerbaijan. This type of artistic circle is still in existence and Aleskerov is only too happy to continue to play a part. In particular, he has joined the “Labyrinth” artists’ collective, run by Azerbaijani artist Sabina Shikhlinskaya. He committed himself to this adventure because he felt first of all that “Labyrinth” would act as a channel for the creative inspiration of the upcoming generation of artists and secondly that it would look at subjects that were important to him, such as the environment and refugees. Alongside this, by becoming more involved in local artistic activities and pursuing his own work within the same paradigm, he has come to see the “void” that is so integral to major international events. This meeting of personalities suddenly seemed to him to be nothing but a “bourgeois salon” where he was simply out of place…

During the ten years of perestroika, photography ceased to be of much interest to most people. Political upheaval and wars became the maid fodder for television bulletins and the press. Purely documentary photography did not suffer in the same way, but the photography that had kept closer ties with its artistic tradition struggled to make an impact. Gradually, this tendency was reversed. Weary of the horrors of war, many photographers began to search for another form of truth, something with a broader horizon. That is not to say that the representation of death or misery disappeared completely, simply that the means by which these themes were dealt with changed considerably. This was particularly the case for Sanan Aleskerov who, since the beginning of his career, has been on a quest for Truth. The reality of the world we live in must be represented with emotion and sincerity. Aleskerov recounts how he took many photographs of particularly tragic scenes, the burials of war victims for example. Each time, he looked through both lens and tears.

The quest for the True or more precisely the authentic is something that Aleskerov feels is missing in so-called “Western creation”. This is a tradition with a strong interest in the macabre, so much so that it has become a dominant theme of reflection. Aleskerov combats both this taste for “necrophilia” and the system that seeks to standardize art. In his view, the “biophile” approach is the only productive one, because it is a true reflection of life, it transmits the very essence of human existence. The photo may represent a corpse, but this image must give off a pure sense of authenticity by being a part of human reality. Against the standardization, and therefore the globalization of art, Aleskerov proposes a “sideways look” at the world. To do so means being free and aware of one’s choices and desires. This required the development of an inner strength. This artist-photographer has found his by burning towards religion, or more precisely towards God, because he claims not to belong to any church.

Galway features a number of interlocking waterways which pass through the city and they have played a major role in its development as an industrial town.

The waterway system is a bit complicated and I am still trying to determine the names of all of the streams, mill races and canals. If my description is incorrect you are invited to correct me as necessary.

The Eglington Canal in Galway was built c.1850. It follows a curving path south from inflow from River Corrib Upper and passes under five bridges which have made watercourse non-navigable.

The canal begins to north of Salmon Weir on west bank of Corrib River (upper) where a small harbour is located.

The canal then proceeds south-west splitting into two separate waterways with the main canal continuing to south-west and a shorter but but equally substantial branch proceeding south beneath a road bridge and a modern pedestrian bridge and it the past this branch would have serviced a collection of mills which are built surrounding a small harbour at end of the branch.

The main canal continues south-west before curving back around to continue south-east after passing beneath two recent concrete road bridges. The Canal at these points is narrowed by about two metres eliminating need for more complex structures.

Between these two bridges is second branch which follows a south-easterly route before re-entering the canal south of lock basin via a stone-lined channel.

The lock basin has limestone block lining with limestone coping blocks, timber lock gates and box. One set of gates has been removed and the flow of canal is now regulated by the remaining gate and sluice racks to north of lock basin. The canal then continues to south-east before splitting again with south-east branch passing under William O'Brien Bridge and into Claddagh Quay and second branch travelling roughly north-east before re-entering River Corrib (lower) after passing over stone-lined weir.

The kit features a curious mechanism whereby the ticket is dispensed forward when the holder is pulled open.

The box features a patented sliding mechanism by Burgopack. Manufactured by Aries Packaging (South Africa) under license from Burgopack (UK).

The kit includes a stadium hospitality programme, match specific pin and wrist band. The overall quality of the kit is quite good, but the artwork for the pin and wristband appear to be raster based – which makes them look like cheap knockoffs.

Some serious effort and design has gone into this kit and opening mechanism – which appears to have flown under the radar of FIFA's Green Goal programme.
