This blue hour photograph of Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands (MBS) with drifting clouds was taken from the building roof of Marina Barrage. The lit natural and super-trees in the Garden, domes and distinctive boat-like roof top design of MBS, are some of the attractive features of Marina Bay. The floating pontoon in the right foreground provides space for small vessels to be moored.

Autumn, also known as Fall in American English and Canadian English, is one of the four temperate seasons. Outside the tropics, autumn marks the transition from summer to winter, in September (Northern Hemisphere) or March (Southern Hemisphere). Autumn is the season when the duration of daylight becomes noticeably shorter and the temperature cools considerably. Day length decreases and night length increases as the season progresses until the Winter Solstice in December (Northern Hemisphere) and June (Southern Hemisphere). One of its main features in temperate climates is the striking change in colour for the leaves of deciduous trees as they prepare to shed.

USA 2016

We went to USA in September 2016. These next set of images are from just a few of the places that we visited. It is a fantastic place to explore. These images are from Boston and other places and represent a few of the buildings and architectural features that were photographed at the time.

This is the first of two postings.

The Painted Desert area is a broad region of rocky badlands encompassing more than 93,500 acres, this vast landscape features rocks in every hue – from deep lavenders and rich grays to reds, oranges and even pinks.

Located in Northern Arizona, the Painted Desert stretches from Grand Canyon National Park eastward to Petrified Forest National Park, with a large portion lying within the Navajo Nation.

A natural canvas millions of years in the making, no one event shaped the Painted Desert. Instead, the area – which is home to many memorable formations and features – serves as proof of the earth’s volatility: volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods and sunlight all combined to create the Painted Desert. Deposits of clay and sandstone, stacked in elegant layers, play with the setting Arizona sun in an altering display of colorful radiance.

Both the Navajo and Hopi people have lived in the region for hundreds of years, but it was Spanish Colonialists who gave this landscape the name we know it by today – El Desierto Pintado.

The robin features prominently in British folklore and that of northwestern France, but much less so in other parts of Europe. It was held to be a storm-cloud bird and sacred to Thor, the god of thunder, in Norse mythology. But this one was quietly waiting for me in the Jardins de Bagatelle.

At Pashley Manor Gardens you will discover 11 acres of beautiful borders and vistas – the culmination of a lifetime of passion for gardening, an appetite for beauty and an admiration of the tradition of the English Country garden. These graceful gardens, on the border of Sussex and Kent, are family owned and maintained – visitors often express delight at the attention to detail displayed throughout and the intimate, peaceful atmosphere.

All the ingredients of the English Country Garden are present – sweeping herbaceous borders, ha-ha, well maintained lawns, box hedges, espaliered rose walk, historic walled garden, inspiring kitchen garden, venerable trees and the Grade I listed house as a backdrop. The gardens are a haven for wildlife – bees, butterflies and small birds as well as moor hens, ducks and a black swan. Then, of course, the plants! Borders overflowing with perennials and annuals – the look changing through the seasons, but always abundantly filled, and each garden ‘room’ planted in a different colour theme.

Pashley is also renowned for fantastic displays of tulips, roses and dahlias. Our annual Tulip Festival features more than 48,000 tulips this year! During Special Rose Week over a hundred varieties of rose swathe the walls, climb obelisks and bloom in flower beds. Then in late summer our Dahlia Days event transforms the gardens once more with bountiful, brightly coloured dahlias in every border and pot.

Add to all this a Café and Terrace with excellent garden views, serving delicious homemade lunches, scones and cakes; Sculpture and Art Exhibitions; a Gift Shop with Plant Sales; and a friendly, knowledgeable team waiting to welcome you, and the recipe for a wonderful day out is complete.

Lyrics

I am not a stranger to the dark

Hide away, they say

'Cause we don't want your broken parts

I've learned to be ashamed of all my scars

Run away, they say

No one'll love you as you are

But I won't let them break me down to dust

I know that there's a place for us

For we are glorious

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down

I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out

I am brave, I am bruised

I am who I'm meant to be, this is me

Look out 'cause here I come

And I'm marching on to the beat I drum

I'm not scared to be seen

I make no apologies, this is me

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh

Another round of bullets hits my skin

Well, fire away 'cause today, I won't let the shame sink in

We are bursting through the barricades and

Reaching for the sun (we are warriors)

Yeah, that's what we've become (yeah, that's what we've become)

I won't let them break me down to dust

I know that there's a place for us

For we are glorious

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down

I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out

I am brave, I am bruised

I am who I'm meant to be, this is me

Look out 'cause here I come

And I'm marching on to the beat I drum

I'm not scared to be seen

I make no apologies, this is me

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh

This is me

and I know that I deserve your love

(Oh-oh-oh-oh) 'cause there's nothing I'm not worthy of

(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh)

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down

I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out

This is brave, this is proof

This is who I'm meant to be, this is me

Look out 'cause here I come (look out 'cause here I come)

And I'm marching on to the beat I drum (marching on, marching, marching on)

I'm not scared to be seen

I make no apologies, this is me

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down

I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out

I'm gonna send a flood

Gonna drown them out

Oh

INFO 'The Domesday Book records Ringmore as a Devon Manor known then as ‘Ronmore’. Stephen de Haccombe, and his successors are know to have built three chapels in the area, two survive as chapels today, one at Haccombe, and the other is St Nicholas in Ringmore, Shaldon.

The third local chapel is only a ruin. Church Architects are of the opinion the St Nicholas is of 13th Century origins, a fact borne out by the East end Wall with it’s Lancet window-a fact accepted as proof.

Records of various events refer to this church, and the Register of Baptisms was started in 1616, prior to that, Baptisms had taken place at Haccombe. About this time, the Carew family –now Lords of the Manor of Haccombe, carried out repairs to St Nicholas, but the fabric of the building, and it’s architectural features were kept intact. Haccombe Church supplied the Clergy to the Church until 1621 when the first Clergy signed the Baptism register - Elezeus Coke.

Burial and Marriage registers were than started –and in 1671 Lord Clifford bought several local estates including the Manor of Ringmore with St Nicholas Parish. Bishop Keppel visited the church in 1768 and decided that care was needed to restore the Church.

By 1790 a large extension had been added, and a gallery built, along with various other improvements. Mention of a Church organ was made in 1827, but was then replaced with an early version of the Harmonium called a ‘Seraphine’. 1839 saw a gallery added to the North wall for the Sunday School, and a new roof with a domed skylight and wooden Bell tower added in1841. The original font had been removed, and replaced by the existing font-which is Saxon or early Norman.

Reverend Richard Marsh-Dunn cancelled plans for any more changes to St Nicholas, as he had decided to build a new church on the reclaimed land on Riverside in Shaldon.

This was consecrated and dedicated to St.Peter, and became the new Parish Church of St.Nicholas, South Devon in 1903. St Nicholas was subsequently renovated with funds generated by a generous benefactor, and was given the official title of Chapel of Ease.'

The fumaroles at Steamboat Point are the first major thermal features a visitor will encounter when entering Yellowstone National Park from the East Entrance. Fumaroles are vents or openings at the surface where volcanic gases and vapors are emitted. Faint to loud roars and hissing can be heard as the gas escapes the vent. Most of the vapor emitted by fumaroles is steam, formed as groundwater circulates deeply through heated rock. The water vapor mixes with volcanic gases given off by magma deep below in Yellowstone’s caldera. These volcanic gases include sulfur compounds, such as various sulfur oxides and hydrogen sulfide which accounts for the sulfur or “rotten egg smell” visitors may notice. There are no geysers that erupt water here. The fumaroles at Steamboat Point are some of the thermal features associated with the Marys Bay hydrothermal explosion crater that forms this rounded bay on the northeast side of Yellowstone Lake. There are several such hydrothermal explosion craters scattered across Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. They range from tens of feet to more than a mile across. This one at Marys Bay is not only the largest hydrothermal explosion crater documented in Yellowstone but it is also the largest in the world. It measures 1.5 miles (2.6 km) in diameter and forms an embayment on the north side of Lake Yellowstone. The crater, which formed 13,800 years ago, may have been the result of several separate explosions over a short period of time. The cause or trigger for these hydrothermal explosions are not fully understood but pressure release due to glacial melting, earthquakes, or rapid changes in lake levels could be significant factors. Geological studies have found that these large, violent hydrothermal events are independent of associated volcanism. In the past 16,000 years, none of these events have been followed by an eruption of magma. The deeper magma systems seen unaffected by these sometimes spectacular steam explosions in their overlying hydrothermal systems.

Ha Long Bay features over 1,600 limestone karsts and islets rising dramatically from emerald-green waters. These formations, shaped by 500 million years of geological evolution, are dotted with caves, grottoes, and secluded beaches.

The name “Ha Long” translates to “Descending Dragon”, derived from a local legend. According to the tale, a dragon descended from the heavens to protect Vietnam from invaders, creating the bay’s rocky islands by thrashing its tail.

On the roof of the boat you may notice three animated drone operators who are ecstatic over a perfect sunrise. One of the sunrises I will never forget.

Trap Pond State Park is a 3,653[1] acre (8.5 km²) Delaware state park located near Laurel, Delaware, USA. It is one of the largest surviving fragments of what was once an extensive wetland in what is now southwestern Sussex County. The state park features an extensive patch of bald cypress trees.

MARRAKESH

The Bahia Palace, set in extensive gardens, was built in the late 19th century by the Grand Vizier of Marrakesh, Si Ahmed ben Musa (Bou-Ahmed). Bou Ahmed resided here with his four wives, 24 concubines and many children. With a name meaning "brilliance", it was intended to be the greatest palace of its time, designed to capture the essence of Islamic and Moroccan architectural styles. Bou-Ahmed paid special attention to the privacy of the palace in its construction and employed architectural features such as multiple doors which prevented passers-by from seeing into the interior. The palace took seven years to build, with hundreds of craftsmen from Fes working on its wood, carved stucco and zellij. The palace is set in a two-acre (8,000 m²) garden with rooms opening onto courtyards. The palace acquired a reputation as one of the finest in Morocco and was the envy of other wealthy citizens. Upon the death of Bou-Ahmed in 1900, the palace was raided by Sultan Abd al-Aziz.

Edwards Gardens in Toronto features a fountain that includes a gold statue. It's located within the larger Toronto Botanical Garden complex. The fountain is a prominent feature, often seen in photos and descriptions of the garden.

Monument Valley, located on the Navajo Nation within Arizona and Utah, has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. It is perhaps most famous for its use in many John Ford films. It has also been featured in such films as Easy Rider, Forrest Gump, and The Eiger Sanction. The twin buttes of Monument Valley ("the Mittens"), the Moccasin Arch, and the Eye of the Sun, among other features, have developed iconic status.

The Cleveland Trust Company Building is a 1907 building designed by George B. Post and located at the intersection of East 9th Street and Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland's Nine-Twelve District.[2] The building is a mix of Beaux-Arts, Neoclassical, and Renaissance Revival architectural styles. It features a glass-enclosed rotunda, a tympanum sculpture, and interior murals. It is registered on the U.S. National Register of Historical places.

This is the "The Alligator Car", named after the way the sides of the cockpit bow out where the fuel tanks are located.

Designed by Ralph Bellamy, the car features the mid-mounted Cosworth DFV V8 and Hewland 5-speed manual gearbox that many of its peers of the period ran.

The cars driver list for 1971 includes Peter Revson, Denny Hulme, Jody Scheckter and Jackie Oliver, but even so, reliability plagued the M19A and it finished down in sixth place in that years championship.

It's in interesting car, and was one of the final cars before the high air box period where the engines became covered in body work. I especially love the tobacco coloured screen, which seems to suit it so well.

Possible Crimson x Eastern Rosella (?), near Bulla, Melbourne, Australia. Not sure if this bird is a hybrid? It has most of the features of an Eastern Rosella, but it has prominent green feathers on the head and around the eye, as female and immature Crimson Rosella's have. The bright white feathers below the beak confirm that it is at least partly an Eastern Rosella.

Sastrugi

Sastrugi, or zastrugi, are features formed by erosion of snow by wind. They are found in polar regions, and in snowy, wind-swept areas of temperate regions, such as frozen lakes or mountain ridges. Sastrugi are distinguished by upwind-facing points, resembling anvils, which move downwind as the surface erodes. These points usually lie along ridges parallel to the prevailing wind; they are steep on the windward side and sloping to the leeward side. Smaller irregularities of this type are known as ripples (small, ~10 mm high) or wind ridges.

Large sastrugi are troublesome to skiers and snowboarders. Traveling on the irregular surface of sastrugi can be very tiring, and can risk breaking equipment—ripples and waves are often undercut and the surface is hard and unforgiving, with constant minor topographic changes between ridge and trough.

Etymology

The words sastrugi and zastrugi are Russian-language plurals; the singular is zastruga. The form sastruga started as the German-language transliteration of the Russian word заструга (plural: заструги).

A Latin-type analogical singular sastrugus is used in various writings on exploration of the South Pole, including Robert Falcon Scott's expedition's diaries and Ernest Shackleton's The Heart of the Antarctic.

Formation mechanism

White and black colors on sastrugi are not lights and shadows, they demonstrate difference in radioreflectivity of snow deposits on the windward and leeward sides of a sastruga.

Under the action of steady wind, free snow particles accumulate and drift like the sand grains in barchan dunes, and the resulting drifting snow shapes are also popularly referred to as barchans. Inuit of Canada call them kalutoqaniq. When winds slacken, the drifted formations consolidate via sublimation and recrystallization. Subsequent winds erode kalutoqaniq into the sculptured forms of sastrugi. Inuit call large sculpturings kaioqlaq and small ripples tumarinyiq. Further erosion may turn kaioqlaq back into drifting kalutoqaniq. An intermediate stage of erosion is mapsuk, an overhanging shape. On the windward side of a ridge, the base erodes faster than the top, producing a shape like an anvil tip pointing upwind.

On sea ice

Sastrugi are more likely to form on first-year sea ice than on multiyear ice. First-year ice is smoother than multiyear ice, which allows the wind to pass uniformly over the surface without topographic obstructions. Except during the melt season, snow is dry and light in climates cold enough for sea ice, allowing the snow to be easily blown and create sastrugi parallel to the wind direction. The locations of sastrugi are fixed by March in the northern hemisphere and may be linked to the formation of melt ponds. Melt ponds are more likely to form in the depressions between sastrugi on first-year ice.

The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino is a five-diamond luxury hotel and casino resort located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, United States, on the site of the old Sands Hotel. Designed by KlingStubbins, the hotel tower contains 36 stories and rises 475 feet (145 m). The Venetian is owned and operated by Las Vegas Sands. The Venetian also serves as the seat of the corporate headquarters for its parent company.

The Venetian resort complex is (together with the adjacent Sands Expo Convention Center and The Palazzo Hotel and Casino Resort) the world's second-largest hotel, with 4,049 rooms, 3,068 suites ranging in price from $169 to $10,000 per night and a 120,000-square-foot (11,000 m2) casino. Since its opening, The Venetian Macao is now the largest casino in the world, beating The Venetian, Las Vegas.

In April 1996, Sheldon Adelson announced plans to create on the property the largest resort on the Strip. This project would be situated on the former Sands property. On November 26, 1996, eight years after it was purchased by the owners of The Interface Group—Adelson, Richard Katzeff, Ted Cutler, Irwin Chafetz and Jordan Shapiro, the Sands Hotel was imploded to make way for The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino. Groundbreaking for the hotel began on April 14, 1997.

The resort opened on May 3, 1999, with flutter of white doves, sounding trumpets and singing gondoliers, with actress Sophia Loren joining The Venetian Chairman and Owner, Sheldon G. Adelson, in dedicating the first motorized gondola. Built at a cost of $1.5 billion, it was one of the most expensive resorts of its kind when it opened.

On June 27, 2003, the 1,013-room Venezia Tower opened. It was built on top of the garage parking lot.

in 2010, it was announced that it will be affiliated with InterContinental Hotels Group.[2]

In October 2011, the Cantor Race & Sportsbook opened, which was the only Las Vegas sportsbook that was open 24 hours a day. On June 11, 2012, the Venetian opened Carnevale, a summer-long festival that is anchored by a nightly 3-D projection show on the clock tower. In September 2012, The Blue Man Group show closed and relocated to the Monte Carlo, after being at the Venetian for six years.

The hotel uses Venice, Italy, as its design inspiration and features architectural replicas of various Venetian landmarks, including the Palazzo Ducale, Piazza San Marco, Piazzetta di San Marco, the Lion of Venice Column and the Column of Saint Theodore, St Mark's Campanile, and the Rialto Bridge. The design architects for this project were The Stubbins Associates and WAT&G

The 1958 Scarab Mk II, one of 3 legendary vehicles built by Lance Reventlow, who at age 21, and also the heir to the Woolworth fortune, sought to challenge European dominance with American innovation and Chevrolet V8 power

This Mk II Scarab, is the second of 3 Chevy small block front engined racers, and the one that actually won the US Grand Prix in Riverside, California, against a gaggle of the biggest and best from Europe, including Phill Hill in his monster Ferrari 412S.

The Scarabs absolutely dominated American Racing through 1962, and continued to be successfully raced for several more years. But for the late 50s rule change in European Formula 1 racing limiting the engine size to 3 liters, Lance could never fulfill his dream (shared with Briggs Cunningham) of conquering European road racing with Yankee ingenuity.

A black scaffolding structure is set on a mirror glass floor inducing the destruction of the fragile undersurface. Sequences of the film "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (USA 1945) are projected in the space and being distorted by the mirrored floor as well as by features of the architecture, namely the niche of the window and its frame.

One time, as a boy, I got lost in a large wood. I ran for an hour and a half or two, going further into the thick of the forest without finding any way out. And, as the sun was setting, I became terrified, and so I began to scream. Who knows how long I yelled? Suddenly, in the gathering dark, I heard a voice answer me, and I was filled with an inexpressible sense of liberation. In that tragic moment, I applied my fundamental human energy according to the purpose for which it was made, recovered my freedom to act, and moved my feet towards my salvation.

Another very different location on the northern section of the Trans-Mongolian Railway. Geographically, this area features a unique mix of terrain… rivers, mountains, pine forests, and sand. At times it resembles the Gobi, while in other moments it feels more like an oasis ️

Common wood pigeons, scientifically known as Columba palumbus, are highly popular among bird enthusiasts for several reasons. They are far larger than the urban pigeons, with distinctive physical features, including a plump body, broad wings, and grayish-blue feathers with white patches.

The artwork was created by artist Michael Trainor and is reputed to be the world’s biggest Mirror Ball being 6metres in diameter. The mirror ball is covered with 47,000 mirror tiles, and rotates in a full circle once a minute.

The artist was inspired by and named the work after the 1969 Hollywood film ‘They Shoot Horses Don’t They?’ which features a large Mirror Ball. It was originally installed in 2002, as one of a series of commissioned artworks known as The Great Promenade Show.
