Ukrainian war features as European councillors meet in Tralee
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine featured in a meeting of European political leaders which took place in Tralee. Delegates from the Council of Europe were in the Co Kerry town at the invitation of Kerry County Mayor, Cllr Jimmy Moloney, who heads the Irish delegation to the Strasbourg based forum.
Twenty-seven local government elected members from Sweden, Germany, Belgium, NL, France, Austria, Georgia, Serbia, Armenia, the UK and, notably, Ukraine, were present at the meeting.
In between meetings the delegates were shown the best of Kerry food, music and landscape. A visit to famed Banna Strand made a big impression on delegates from landlocked eastern European countries who had never before seen an open ocean.
An emotional Ukrainian reunion took place at the beginning of the meeting as Ukrainian families housed by Kerry County Council had the opportunity to speak with Ukranian delegates at the meeting. They had an emotional reunion with Ukrainian elected member Svitlana Bohatyrchuk Kryvko who delivered a powerful speech to the Bureau regarding the situation in their home country.
During his welcome address to the Congress, Cllr. Moloney offered his full support and solidarity with Ukraine and thanked the Ukrainian families present for sharing their experience. In his concluding remarks, Cllr. Moloney warned that “Putin’s Ukraine invasion has been a wake-up call for a world taking democracy for granted.”

Story Extravaganza 2014 was held at New Hanover County Northeast Public Library on May 3, 2014.
News Release:
(New Hanover County, N.C.) - New Hanover County Library (NHCL) is excited to host the fourth annual Story Extravaganza at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Northeast Regional Library located at 1241 Military Cutoff Road, Wilmington. The storytelling festival for children features 15 free performances and three free activities, all based on popular children’s picture books.
The David Paynter Assembly Room is the main stage for the performances, where a new act starts every seven minutes. Expect music, drama, comedy, and audience participation!
The first set starts at 9:15 a.m. and features performances by Dodie Guardia, Mary Kleinfeldt, Darrell Rackley, the NHCPL Rap Club, and No Sleeves Magic. Mr. Scooter is emcee.
Come back at 10:20 a.m. after a 30-minute break to stretch, visit with performers, and check out the activities. Stories interpreted by Island Montessori, Terry Rollins, Zach Hanner, Max Nuñez, and Beth Peddle are in the second set.
Set number three starts at 11:55 a.m., after another half-hour intermission. You’ll hear from Margaret Miles, the Performance Club Kids, Jocelyn Beam-Walson, Mr. Scooter Hayes, and Memory Lane Comics.
Three activities will go on inside the library during the morning:
Cape Fear Museum will sponsor bug-related science activities in the Children’s Room. These include the chance to act out the life cycle of a mosquito and to see what Byron Barton’s picture book world of Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! looks like through compound eyeglasses.
Children’s Museum of Wilmington will offer pirate-themed arts and crafts in the Watkins Room, based on June Sobel’s pirate ABC book, Shiver Me Letters. Make your own pirate hat, spy scope and treasure map!
Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell inspires the story walk in the Oak Room. Kids open crates and boxes from the zoo while parents read the story aloud! Will they find live animals?
Parents attending Story Extravaganza will get lots of tips and ideas about ways to help kids develop important literacy skills, along with a list of the featured books. Preparing students to be successful in a 21st century world is one of New Hanover County’s strategic goals, and NHC librarians know that kids whose parents have fun reading, singing, telling, and acting out stories with them at home are off to a great start.
Story Extravaganza is planned and presented by New Hanover County Public Library, with funding from the Friends of the Library. The event is free and open to the public, and registration is not required.
For more information about Story Extravaganza call Scooter Hayes at New Hanover County’s Myrtle Grove Library at 910-798-6398.

Established in 1911, the Mount Airy Forest covers an impressive 1,471 acres and includes natural areas, planned landscapes, buildings, structures, and landscape features. The numerous hiking trails, bridle paths, walls, gardens, pedestrian bridges, and various other improvements within Mount Airy Forest reflect the ambitious park planning and development that took place in Cincinnati in the early to mid-20th century. Conceived as the nation’s first urban reforestation project, the park has developed over the years—especially during the Depression and post-World War II period- into a park with a variety of areas, spaces and structures designed to accommodate recreational, social, and educational activities. Today it continues to offer a large expanse of protected land within the city limits where the public can enjoy the richness and diversity of nature. Weekly Highlights: www.nps.gov/history/nr/feature/weekly_features/10_04_23_M...
__________________________________________
This Mount Airy Forest National Register nomination was prepared in conjunction with the The Historic Resources o/the Cincinnati Park and Parkway System, 1817-1959 which documents the history and development of one of the most comprehensive urban park systems in the nation. The study (or MPD) includes historic contexts, definition of property types and registration requirements, methodology, and bibliography. Mount Airy Forest is the largest park, by far, in Cincinnati's park system. The period of significance extends from its creation in 1911 until 1959, when the Police Headquarters was constructed. The end date also coincides with R. Carl Freund's death, the architect for twelve Mount Airy Forest buildings. His death also established the end date for the MPD described above. The vast majority of the park was developed during the Depression era utilizing both federal funding and federal labor programs.
Mount Airy Forest is eligible for the National Register under Criterion A as one of the earliest (if not the first) urban reforestation projects in the nation; for its Depression era development utilizing federal WP A and CW A funding; and for the African-American Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) labor that provided manpower for tree-planting, road and trail building, and construction of shelters and comfort stations; and under Criterion C for landscape architectural significance as a joint design developed by noted landscape architect George E. Kessler and State Forester Edmund Secrest; for its architectural significance representing "Rustic" park architectural design; for the quality of the construction and craftsmanship of the buildings and structures in the park; and for the association with R. Carl Freund, the Cincinnati Park Board's most prolific architect, who designed 12 buildings in Mount Airy Forest and 37 for the Cincinnati Park Board between 1930 and 1959.
Mount Airy Forest was established in 1911 with an initial purchase of 168 acres. Although reforestation efforts began immediately, the construction of roads, trails, buildings, and walls began during the Depression. The CCC camp established in Mount Airy Forest was one of 2,600 camps established nationally to employ young men aged 17- 25. Of the several thousand CCC camps established during the Depression, approximately 150 employed all African-American youth. Between 1933 when the CCC was founded and 1941, 250,000 African-Americans served in the CCC. (Edgar Brown, The CCC and Colored Youth, U. S. Government Printing Office, 1941) The CCC camp in Mount Airy Forest operated from July 10, 1935 to July 14, 1937, and provided 51,414 man days of work in the park and accomplished a tremendous amount of work.

Inspired by The Liger Zero (ライガーゼロ Raigā Zero) is a Lion-Type Zoid, one of over 200 species of bio-mechanical life forms that form the Zoid race and provide the basis for TOMY’s model kit, anime, and comic-based Zoids franchise. The Liger Zero is the main characters' Zoid in Zoids: New Century (the first Zoids series to be dubbed into English and shown in the US), and Zoids: Fuzors.
It was also featured in both the Chaotic Century and New Century manga series and played a role in the Battle Story. As a model, it was the centre of Hasbro's New American Release marketing campaign, making it one of the most widely recognisable Zoids in the entire franchise.
The Liger Zero is a Lion-type Zoid used primarily by the Helic Republic, though some variants are used by the Guylos Empire. Unlike its predecessor, the Blade Liger, the Liger Zero is not a derivative of an older design, but rather a completely new Zoid. Although it is primarily used by the Republic, its original prototype data belonged to the Guylos Empire (which derived it from a wild Zoid), which was later stolen by the Republic forces and put into mass production to be used in their war (during the Battle Story). The Guylos Empire would eventually counter it with new variants of their own CAS-customised Ligers such as the Liger Zero X.

One of the many nice features of this catalogue is that it includes prices -- probably wholesale rather than retail. Given that it was issued on the brink of the great Civil War inflation, it would have been rapidly amended. To convert these prices into 2015 equivalents, multiply by approximately 380 -- this will express them as the same proportion of average blue-collar wages in 2015 as they were in 1861. I have been working on this during my free time. It features the lyrics to Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip "Get Better".
They recently set up a facebook page after the London Riots -
After all the nonsense on the streets of England this last week, this song has a clear and relevant message. Buy the tune now and get it charting if we can, so more people can hear it, and perhaps heed this advice.
I'm trying to get 'Get Better' by Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip some exposure in light of the recent rioting in London and across the country, and get the wonderful message contained in the lyrics of the song out there in a time of need for such words. The mesmerising chorus says it all, and the song manages to say all that the politicians are unable to get across in a way that can be understood by those who need to hear it. Please take a listen here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEitrZU-nCw. I believe it sums up the sentiment of many people towards the young people involved in the rioting: not that we are het up against them, but that we just want them to be better people.
The facebook group is kicking off in an amazing way, with 824 members in just 17 hours! Please like the page and spread the word, and maybe we can use music to calm the rioters troubled souls.

St Peter’s Church (in St Peter’s Square, next to M&S), is an ancient building with several contemporary features, where you will find a remarkable oasis of peace and tranquillity at the heart of Nottingham’s busy life. Come and visit during church opening hours to pray, to reflect, to seek God’s guidance and help, or to enjoy the varied menu of the church Coffee Room next door. Worship at St Peter’s is largely centred on the main Sunday morning service, which begins at 10.45 am and ends at around noon, followed by coffee and tea. Most main Sunday services are Eucharists, with choral Matins on the first Sunday of the month. Alternatively, start your Sunday with the quiet traditional language service of Holy Communion at 8.15 am; evening services vary according to the Sunday of the month, but normally start at 5.00 pm (ending by around 5.45 pm). A monthly Family Service takes place at 9.45 am, generally on the second Sunday of the month. This lasts around half an hour and is designed to meet the needs of children and those who accompany them. It is followed by coffee, pastries and crafts in the Coffee Room.

History
St Peter’s is one of the three parishes covering the ancient town centre of Nottingham. Domesday Book refers only to St Mary’s, the pre-Conquest foundation in the old Anglian borough; St Peter’s and St Nicholas’ were established after the Conquest, quite possibly before the end of the 11th Century, in the ‘French borough’ which rapidly grew up between the old settlement and the Norman castle. The earliest reference to these two churches is in about 1108, when William Peveril gave them to the newly-founded Lenton Priory. The first church, was built on a rock above the marsh formed by the Rowell Brook. This is now St Peter’s Square, and the marshy conditions caused problems for the parish authorities for centuries. It was presumably a simple building with a nave and a round apse. It was destroyed – perhaps twice – in the mid-12th Century.
The church was rebuilt between 1180 and 1220, with a south aisle; some of this building remains in use today, perhaps incorporating fragments of the earlier church. The tower and spire were added shortly before the Black Death, which reached Nottingham in 1348 and stopped further work for some years.
The final addition to the mediaeval church was the clerestory, with a new oak roof to the nave. This was built about 1480, when wood was given by Nicholas de Strelley from his estate outside the town. The weight of the new stonework pushed the ancient south arcade out of true, and though collapse was prevented by new buttresses to the south aisle, the columns towards the east end of the nave are still clearly far from vertical.
Like most mediaeval churches, St Peter’s contained many chapels and chantries, often with their own chaplains or mass-priests. Six chapels are known by name, though the location of some of them within the church is not certain.
After the Restoration, St Peter’s chancel was rebuilt, though on a smaller plan than before. The mediaeval chancel arch remained, though it had a gallery in front of it and was built up almost down to the level of the capitals.
The tower, and particularly the spire, has been prominent in the Nottingham townscape for 600 years. Over the centuries there have been many repairs: the top part of the spire seems to need rebuilding once or twice a century.
Nottingham was changing its face dramatically by the 1820s, as a flood of textile workers and a huge expansion of industry led to tenements being built over the gardens and to gross overcrowding around the town centre. The Narrow Marsh and the Broad Marsh (the latter in St Peter’s parish) became some of the worst slums in Europe, and suffered badly in the cholera epidemics of 1832 and later.
The church itself also underwent changes. The south door was closed about 1820, extra pews were installed and the west door was re-opened. But it was the major rebuilding of the chancel and north transept in 1877, and the associated re-ordering of the nave, which gave us most of the church we see today. The new chancel at first opened straight from the nave, giving a much more spacious impression than before (the present rood screen was erected only in 1898), and the great tower arch could again be appreciated once the organ gallery had been removed from the west end. New pews replaced the Georgian box-pews, which were used as an elegant wainscoting round the walls.
Victorian stained glass, some of good quality, was inserted in several windows at this time, mostly as memorials to clergy or notable families, but the church has retained enough plain glass to keep it light. The windows designed by Sir Ninian Comper in the north aisle, inserted in the 1960s, continue this tradition of filling the church with light.
A change in the fortunes of St Peter’s occurred in 1933. As part of a re-structuring of parishes in the city, St Peter’s benefice (which had been vacant for two years pending decisions of the ecclesiastical authorities) was united with St James’ Standard Hill.
Two strong rectors strengthened the important place of St Peter’s in the city centre. Arnold Lee (rector 1937-48) did much to make the church a centre of rest and peace, comfort and support, during the Second World War – a role which it continues to have. Angus Inglis (rector 1948-79) was also devoted to his flock and established a strong tradition of worship, continuing the choral tradition which dated back to the 19th Century. But it was his efforts in beautifying the church – new windows, a new pulpit, new lighting, redecoration of the chancel and finally a new west door with fine ironwork – and above all his acumen in negotiating with the authorities and others through the 1960s, during the redevelopment of the Broad Marsh and of St Peter’s Square, which are Inglis’ best memorial. Through promoting two private acts of Parliament he established a basis for future development around the church. The Broad Marsh Centre replaced the slums and devoured the church hall and burial ground. St Peter’s Church Side, the street south of the churchyard, disappeared under the extension of Marks & Spencer’s store.
After Angus Inglis there was a move in the church’s life to clearer social involvement with the disadvantaged of the city, with a more all-encompassing openness and links with local and international charities. Though there was no full-scale re-ordering, a dais was created at the east end of the nave, permitting the occasional use of a nave altar, and a new internal north porch was built, linked to a small room for private consultation and freeing space in the north aisle for circulation and a small library. A coffee room in the St James’s Room began to attract visitors to the church and from the street.
All this expansion meant that more space was needed for clergy and staff, and for social purposes (there had been no church hall since the Broad Marsh development of the 1960s). A church office was established in rented rooms on the second floor of a building in St Peter’s Church Walk, overlooking the church but difficult of access. In 1993 an approach from Marks & Spencer to the church, to permit further development of the store towards the church, led to new negotiations. The weight of these fell on Leslie Morley (rector 1985-99), who was still able to develop the church’s philosophy of acceptance which is now its hallmark. The results have been spectacularly successful.
Thanks to Marks & Spencer’s the church now has, in the St Peter’s Centre, an elegant building a few yards from the re-opened south door. It contains a suite of offices and an attractive seminar room on the first floor, with a spacious expansion of the old coffee room on the ground floor, designed to retain a measure of ecclesiastical flavour in a modern setting: the decoration of the roof of the restaurant is derived from the painted chancel ceiling. The newly landscaped churchyard lost no ground in this operation but is more enclosed by the large windows of the store extension – which from inside give a splendid new perspective on the church – and by fine ironwork gates. New stone steps lead up from St Peter’s Square to the west door, restoring the link with the world below. The Centre backs on to the store but has its own character and, in its prominent position overlooking the Square, offers new opportunities for ministry.
The station at Quorn & Woohouse on the Great Central Railway has been restored, with some licence, to a 1940s theme and is painted into the LNER brown and stone colour scheme which it would have carried at that time.

Features and makeup have been painted on with acrylics, pastel chalks and some colored pencil. I should have sprayed the fixative on her face soon after because now she's been handled so much that she's not as fresh as she once was in 2007.

This set features more photos of the Rinard Covered Bridge and some of the developing Fall colors around the bridge on our visit to it, our third covered bridge stop on 19 Oct 2024. Linda her sister Sue who was visiting with us and myself had a wonderful day visiting the four historic covered bridges on and near Ohio's scenic Route 26.
Rinard bridge seems to be as much a boat as it is a covered bridge. It was built in 1875 and spans the Little Muskingum River. it was destroyed by a flood in 1876. I guess it didn't float to well that time. It was rebuilt but was washed off of its stone piers by floods in 1913 and 1938. Both times it remained intact and was placed back onto its piers. Then in 2004 it was washed off of its piers again but remained in tact. Then before it could be put back in place another flood delivered by hurricane Ivan destroyed it. It was rebuilt again in 2006 using a majority of the original timbers.
