During sunset, a cloud flew in in an amazing shape (a bird, a dragon, and maybe an angel ...)
A little understanding of the physics of cloud formation underscores the complexity of the atmosphere and sheds light on why predicting weather for more than a few days is such a challenge.
Six types of clouds you can see and how they can help you understand the weather.
1) Cumulus clouds - On a sunny day, rays warm the earth, which heats the air located directly above it. The heated air rises upward due to convection and forms cumulus clouds. These “good weather” clouds are like cotton wool. If you look at the sky filled with cumulus clouds, you can see that they have a flat bottom, located at the same level for all clouds. At this altitude, air rising from ground level cools down to the dew point. It usually doesn't rain from cumulus clouds, which means the weather will be good.
2) Cumulonimbus clouds.
Small cumulus clouds do not rain, but if they grow and grow in height, it is a sign that heavy rain is coming soon. This often happens in summer when morning cumulus clouds turn into cumulonimbus during the day. Cumulonimbus clouds often have a flat top. Air convection occurs inside such a cloud, and it gradually cools until it reaches the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere. At this moment, it loses its buoyancy and can no longer rise higher. Instead, it spreads out to the sides, forming the characteristic anvil shape.
3) Cirrus clouds form in very high layers of the atmosphere. They are smoky because they are composed entirely of ice crystals falling in the atmosphere. When cirrus clouds are carried by winds moving at different speeds, they take on a characteristic curved shape. And only at very high altitudes or at high latitudes, cirrus clouds give out rain that reaches the ground.
4) Stratus Clouds - A low-lying, continuous cloud sheet that covers the sky. Stratus clouds are formed by slowly rising air or gentle winds that cover the cold land or sea surface with moist air. Stratus clouds are thin, therefore, despite the gloomy picture, it is unlikely to rain from them, a little drizzle at most. Stratus clouds are identical to fog, so if you've ever walked in a mountainous area on a foggy day, you've been inside a cloud.
5) Lenticular clouds. Smooth and lenticular lenticular clouds form when air is blown up and over a mountain range, and as it travels over a mountain, the air descends to its previous level. At this time, it heats up and the cloud evaporates. But it can slip further, as a result of which the air rises again and forms another lenticular cloud. This can result in a chain of clouds extending far beyond the mountain range. The interaction of wind with mountains and other surface features is one of the many details that must be taken into account in computer simulations to obtain accurate weather predictions.
6) Kelvin - Helmholtz like a breaking ocean wave. When air masses at different heights move horizontally at different speeds, their state becomes unstable. The boundary between the air masses begins to ripple and form large waves, such clouds are quite rare.

I seem to be a bit in a run of sunsets recently so I'm on nights , by Richard Hawley is fine. This is a similar shot of one of my favourite beach features, but with a bigger lens. You lose the sky , and highlight the sinuous pool more.
Lofoten features a mostly subpolar oceanic climate (Cfc) under the Köppen climate classification, although some parts like Skrova features a temperate oceanic climate (Cfb). Winter temperatures in Lofoten are extremely mild considering its location north of the Arctic Circle – possibly has the largest positive temperature anomaly in the world relative to latitude. The mild winters are a result of the temperate waters of the Norwegian Sea, which is warmed by the North Atlantic Current and the Norwegian Current. The mild air (Lows) from the Atlantic having a free path northwards even in winter is also very significant.
Strong winds can occur in late autumn and winter. Snow and sleet are not uncommon in winter. The mountains can have substantial amounts of snow, and avalanches may come down from the steep slopes.
In Svolvær, the sun is above the horizon continuously ("midnight sun") from 25 May to 17 July, and in winter the sun does not rise from 4 December to 7 January. In Leknes, the sun is above the horizon from 26 May to 17 July, and in winter the sun does not rise from 9 December to 4 January.

A close-up framing of an ancient statue depicting Thutmose III with noble facial features, youthful and smiling face, a hallmark of his reign's artistic standard.
The statue is noted for its exceptionally high quality and soft, human-like features, representing a peak in the artistic standards of the mid-18th Dynasty.
Wearing a nemes headdress and a ceremonial beard, stylistic features characteristic of Egyptian pharaohs. The tight centered composition filling the frame with the statue's details allows for an appreciation of the sculptural artistry and the preserved features.
The statue is dramatically lit, with a strong, directional light source from the front and slightly to the left, creating prominent shadows that emphasize the contours of the face, headdress, and beard. The background is dark, isolating the subject and drawing the viewer's attention to the statue.
The figure's face is serene, with distinct eyes, nose, and lips. The shoulders are broad, and the upper part of a broad collar or necklace is visible around the neck and shoulders.
The lighting highlights the smooth, polished surface of the stone, while also revealing subtle textures in the headdress and beard. The intricate details of the headdress stripes and the braided ceremonial beard are clearly visible.
The discovery of this statue in 1904 was part of the Karnak Cachette, one of the largest caches of statues ever found, containing artifacts from Egypt's Dynastic Age.
Crafted from greywacke, a type of sandstone. Greywacke was a commonly used material for sculptures in ancient Egypt due to its durability and fine grain.
A monochromatic or near-monochromatic color scheme, dominated by shades of grey and black, emphasizes the form and texture of the stone sculpture and contributes to a sense of power and serenity.
Taken from the Luxor Museum, a fascinating insight into the history of Luxor and ancient Egyptian civilization.
Established in 1975, it holds a carefully curated selection of wonderful artifacts from the Theban area in excellent preservation state.

Water Pipit along the River Cuckmere.
As this bird is within walking distance from home, I have spent many hours over several days, at least 8 visits, trying to get close enough for a decent image.
An extremely difficult species to get close to. I've decided that one of the identification features is that if you can get closer than 50 metres it probably isn't a Water Pipit!!
The robin features prominently in British folklore and that of northwestern France, but much less so in other parts of Europe. It was held to be a storm-cloud bird and sacred to Thor, the god of thunder, in Norse mythology. But this one was quietly waiting for me in the Jardins de Bagatelle.

Kozłówka Palace is a large rococo and neoclassical palace complex of the Zamoyski family in Kozłówka, Lubartów County, Lublin Voivodeship in eastern Poland.
The palace was built between 1735 and 1742 and is one of Poland's official national Historic Monuments (Pomnik historii), as designated May 16, 2007, and tracked by the National Heritage Board of Poland. It currently houses the Zamoyski Family Museum in Kozłówka. The Kozłówka Landscape Park lies south of the palace complex.
The original palace was built in the first half of 18th century for Michał Bieliński, voivode of Chełmno; its architect was Jozef II Fontana. It represents the characteristic type of baroque suburban residence built entre cour et jardin (between the entrance court and the garden). Its architecture is original - a merger of European art with old Polish building traditions. In 1799, the Palace was acquired by the aristocratic Zamoyski family. It belonged to the family up until 1944. The palace experienced a period of great prosperity during the times of Count Konstanty Zamoyski who remodelled the palace in order to turn it into one of the most monumental and representative magnate residences in Poland.
Between 1879 and 1907, the palace was rebuilt in Neo-Baroque style, the chapel was modified (modelled on the chapel at Versailles Palace); a theatre, a second outbuilding and an entrance gate were also added. The palace also features a unique sewers system from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, which made it possible for the owners of the property to have access to some of the earliest modern bathrooms in Europe.
In 1903, the Kozłówka entail was established by Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, which meant that the property belonging to the Zamoyski family could not be sold or divided and automatically passed by law to the eldest heir.
In 1928, the chairman of the Polish Gymnastics Society Sokół, Count Adam Michał Zamoyski, organized a training camp in the palace gardens for the Polish national gymnastics team in preparation for the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam.
From November 1944, when the last owners Count Aleksander Zamoyski and his wife Countess Jadwiga Zamoyska were forced to flee their palace, it became the property of the Communist regime, whose grip on Poland ended in 1989. It currently hosts the Zamoyski family museum.
The interiors of the palace were preserved despite the ravages of the German Nazi and Soviet Regimes from 1939 to 1989. The original opulent design and most of museum quality art from the Zamoyski family collections remain.
The surroundings of the palace also include a historic chapel, French Baroque garden, stables and a carriage house. The palace grounds also feature the Gallery of Socrealism, the largest collection of communist art in Poland featuring over 1,600 sculptures, paintings, drawings and posters.

A parish church dedicated to St. Nicholas was built on this site in 1091, but this burned down in 1215, the building seen today being as completed in 1350 but heavily restored in 1777. It was given cathedral status in 1882.

Ha Long Bay features over 1,600 limestone karsts and islets rising dramatically from emerald-green waters. These formations, shaped by 500 million years of geological evolution, are dotted with caves, grottoes, and secluded beaches.
The name “Ha Long” translates to “Descending Dragon”, derived from a local legend. According to the tale, a dragon descended from the heavens to protect Vietnam from invaders, creating the bay’s rocky islands by thrashing its tail.
On the roof of the boat you may notice three animated drone operators who are ecstatic over a perfect sunrise. One of the sunrises I will never forget.

Sastrugi
Sastrugi, or zastrugi, are features formed by erosion of snow by wind. They are found in polar regions, and in snowy, wind-swept areas of temperate regions, such as frozen lakes or mountain ridges. Sastrugi are distinguished by upwind-facing points, resembling anvils, which move downwind as the surface erodes. These points usually lie along ridges parallel to the prevailing wind; they are steep on the windward side and sloping to the leeward side. Smaller irregularities of this type are known as ripples (small, ~10 mm high) or wind ridges.
Large sastrugi are troublesome to skiers and snowboarders. Traveling on the irregular surface of sastrugi can be very tiring, and can risk breaking equipment—ripples and waves are often undercut and the surface is hard and unforgiving, with constant minor topographic changes between ridge and trough.
Etymology
The words sastrugi and zastrugi are Russian-language plurals; the singular is zastruga. The form sastruga started as the German-language transliteration of the Russian word заструга (plural: заструги).
A Latin-type analogical singular sastrugus is used in various writings on exploration of the South Pole, including Robert Falcon Scott's expedition's diaries and Ernest Shackleton's The Heart of the Antarctic.
Formation mechanism
White and black colors on sastrugi are not lights and shadows, they demonstrate difference in radioreflectivity of snow deposits on the windward and leeward sides of a sastruga.
Under the action of steady wind, free snow particles accumulate and drift like the sand grains in barchan dunes, and the resulting drifting snow shapes are also popularly referred to as barchans. Inuit of Canada call them kalutoqaniq. When winds slacken, the drifted formations consolidate via sublimation and recrystallization. Subsequent winds erode kalutoqaniq into the sculptured forms of sastrugi. Inuit call large sculpturings kaioqlaq and small ripples tumarinyiq. Further erosion may turn kaioqlaq back into drifting kalutoqaniq. An intermediate stage of erosion is mapsuk, an overhanging shape. On the windward side of a ridge, the base erodes faster than the top, producing a shape like an anvil tip pointing upwind.
On sea ice
Sastrugi are more likely to form on first-year sea ice than on multiyear ice. First-year ice is smoother than multiyear ice, which allows the wind to pass uniformly over the surface without topographic obstructions. Except during the melt season, snow is dry and light in climates cold enough for sea ice, allowing the snow to be easily blown and create sastrugi parallel to the wind direction. The locations of sastrugi are fixed by March in the northern hemisphere and may be linked to the formation of melt ponds. Melt ponds are more likely to form in the depressions between sastrugi on first-year ice.

Kelly Warm Springs hosts an interesting collection of unwanted aquarium fish. The outlet creek is cold enough that these non-native fish have not yet made it to the Snake River. The National Park Service is working on removing them.
It used to be a popular soaking spot for locals, but the presence of a brain-eating amoeba, naeglaria fowleri, seems to have dampened enthusiasm somewhat.
This time it was an Adonis’ Ladybird (Hippodamia variegata) that met a 7-spot (Coccinella septempunctata) on a narrow tree branch.
As well as the much smaller size the body shape and head pattern are useful features to separate the species.
Adonis’ is a rarely reported species in Northumberland the ones I found last year were some of the first records for the county. I’ve found them in more than one place both at the coast and around Newcastle so likely to be more widespread than previously realised
The Basilica of Santa María del Coro is a Baroque Roman Catholic church located in the Old Town of San Sebastián. Completed in 1774, it was built on the site of an earlier Romanesque church. The basilica features a striking façade adorned with sculptures, including a prominent depiction of Saint Sebastian, the city’s patron saint. The basilica serves as a significant cultural and historical landmark in the city, housing a Diocesan Museum within its premises.

Kadriorg Park in Tallinn, Harjumaa, Estonia, features a serene winter scene in February 2021. Snow blankets the landscape, and a pond is dotted with numerous ducks (Anatidae). Leafless trees line the park, and a small bridge crosses the pond. A subtle glow in the background suggests a light or flame in the distance. The tranquil setting showcases the quiet beauty of a snowy winter day in this historic park.
I finally managed to get back to the river this week - chasing the last of a fickle summer whose mornings now carry a hint of autumn. Until I get to review these images; here’s one from the same spot I returned to, taken last autumn – they have in common a play with colour and texture, the reflected leaves painted almost as brushstrokes. In this case, I’ve pushed the interpretation during processing towards the abstract, but quite like the result so I guess I’ll just have to print it to see if it makes the mark. Have a lovely weekend.

Number five in this series features Stuart, a small Iowa town in Adair County with around 1,800 residents. The old downtown area in Stuart has some lovely historic buildings, with trendy retail shops and varied dining options. For example, Doe A Deer is a home goods store offering kitchenware, specialty foods and other gifts. Next door, the Maven Blush Boutique offers chic and stylish women's apparel and accessories.
Developed with Darktable 4.8.0.
About the series: Life in a small Midwestern town often means a slower pace of life, close-knit communities, and a strong connection to the land and agriculture. Residents typically have a strong sense of pride in their hometown and a friendly, neighborly attitude. Small towns usually have limited employment and entertainment options, but the tradeoff is typically a lower cost of living and a quieter, more peaceful environment. Presented in black and white at night, I hope to capture the essence of a few small Iowa towns in this series. Series Album: flic.kr/s/aHBqjBWTai
One time, as a boy, I got lost in a large wood. I ran for an hour and a half or two, going further into the thick of the forest without finding any way out. And, as the sun was setting, I became terrified, and so I began to scream. Who knows how long I yelled? Suddenly, in the gathering dark, I heard a voice answer me, and I was filled with an inexpressible sense of liberation. In that tragic moment, I applied my fundamental human energy according to the purpose for which it was made, recovered my freedom to act, and moved my feet towards my salvation.

Eye catching features on The Chanonry, Old Aberdeen. These buildings are much more recent than the street itself, the name coming from the fact that it was once home to the canons (clergy) of St Machar’s Cathedral, which sits at the far end. The college of canons was incorporated as early as 1240, although canons may have lived here longer than that - the nearby church became a cathedral in the 1100s.
Toffee licks his lips, not in anticipation of what he might catch at the
bird table, but after his lunch.
I don't think he has ever caught a bird in his life and wisely has never shown any interest in them as he knows they can fly and he can't.
Made it to day 13 before sharing a photo of Toffee, last year it was day 11. But what's the point of having a cat unless it features in your photo a day project?
The most famous features of the chapel, among the finest of their type in the world, are the fifteen great stained-glass windows in the nave and apse of the upper chapel, which date from the mid-13th century, as well as the later rose window (put in place in the 15th century). The stone wall surface is reduced to little more than a delicate framework. The thousands of small pieces of glass turn the walls into great screens of coloured light, largely deep blues and reds, which gradually change in intensity from hour to hour.
Most of the windows were put into place between 1242 and 1248. The names of the glass artists are unknown, but the art historian Louis Grodecki identified what appear to be three different ateliers with different styles. The windows in the apse and most of the windows on the north wall of the nave are made by one workshop. These works are known for supple forms and costumes, with simplified features. The second workshop, named by Grodecki as Master of the Ezekiel window, made the Ezekiel and Daniel windows, as well as the window of the Kings. That work is characterized by elongated forms, and more elaborate and angular draperies. The third artist or workshop is called the Master of Judith and Esther, for the distinct style of those windows, as well as the window of Job. They are distinguished by more subtle details in the faces, and a resemblance to the figures in illuminated manuscripts.
Despite some damage the windows display a clear iconographical programme. The three windows of the eastern apse illustrate the New Testament, featuring scenes of The Passion (centre) with the Infancy of Christ (left) and the Life of John the Evangelist (right). By contrast, the windows of the nave are dominated by Old Testament exemplars of ideal kingship/queenship in an obvious nod to their royal patrons. The cycle starts at the western bay of the north wall with scenes from the Book of Genesis (heavily restored). The next ten windows of the nave follow clockwise with scenes from Exodus, Joseph, Numbers/Leviticus, Joshua/Deuteronomy, Judges, (moving to the south wall) Jeremiah/Tobias, Judith/Job, Esther, David and the Book of Kings. The final window, occupying the westernmost bay of the south wall brings this narrative of sacral kingship right up to date with a series of scenes showing the rediscovery of Christ's relics, the miracles they performed, and their relocation to Paris in the hands of King Louis himself.

Autumn scene in NY Central Park featuring the Bow Bridge.
One of the most iconic features of Central Park, Bow Bridge is renowned for its unique design as well as its setting,
Because of its low-lying and graceful curve that resembles the bow of an archer or violinist, it's widely considered a masterpiece of Victorian-era design.
Created as one of the major entrances to the Ramble, and a connection to a path toward Bethesda Terrace, it's a prominent spot that offers expansive views of the Lake and surrounding landscapes. It's one of the most photographed Park features and one of the most romantic, serving as the site of numerous wedding proposals,

The Griffon vulture is sand-coloured to dark brown, with a white head, neck and ruff. The primary- and tail feathers are dark brown to black. Young birds have a brown ruff and are darker in colour. The wings are long and wide and are resemble fingers.
Distribution:
Following a decline in the 20th century by poisoning, hunting and decreasing of food supplies, in recent year the species has increased dramatically in some areas, particularly in Spain, the French Pyrenees and Portugal. In Europe, the breeding population is between 19.000 and 21.000 pairs, with around 17.500 pairs in Spain and approximately 600 in France.
Behavior:
The Griffon vulture feeds mainly on the softer parts of carcasses, such as the muscles and viscera. Because of it’s long neck, this species can reach far into the carcass without snagging. Griffon vultures are very social in comparison to other vulture species. They forage in groups and breed in colonies on steep cliffs.

The bird was perched delicately on a tree branch, where its sleek silhouette contrasted against the soft light filtering through the canopy. The calm, tranquil atmosphere of the scene was a perfect match for capturing the bird’s elegant form and reflective plumage.
In terms of technique, I used a Canon R5 with a 800mm f/11 lens and a 1.4x extender to maintain the required reach while preserving image clarity. The f/16 aperture ensured that both the bird and its environment were in focus, while the ISO 1600 helped balance the low light of the forest. The resulting sharpness and depth allow the vibrant plumage and the bird’s intricate textures to come through vividly. Capturing such a shot in the wild, with the ibis being perfectly positioned, required patience, but the payoff was worth it.
